I grew up about 30 minutes from Branson. Went home last week to check out the courses for Kansas and Branson, as I am doing both as my HIM races this year.

The run course only has one small hill, the rest is nice and flat.

The bike course is going to be fun. The first downhill on 465 when you come off of 76 was the first time I had hit 40+ mph. On the way back to 76, the winds across the bridge were blowing from every direction.

Headed back up there in July to ride it again.

Glad I did it early to see that I need to definitly get in some extra hill work, if you can call what we have in Austin hills compared to Branson.

I see that the swim is a flat course! I hope to Sign up for this in July if I can stay healthy until then.  I'm planning on the swim NOT killin' me!  Unlike quite possibly the bike course.

I have a strict policy of only registering for races with flat swim courses.  The one time I had to swim up hill was not a pretty sight.

What did you think of the bike course as compared to the Kansas course?

I'm vacationing at Big Cedar Lodge this week.  I rode the whole bike course yesterday and did a short 4 mile on the run course.  Let's hope it's not this hot in September.  It was 90 degrees when I finished yesterday at 10:30 AM.

The hills on 465 are fairly tough but there are also some great descents!  I was sustaining 43 mph at one point on the first downhill that you hit when you first enter Hwy 465.

Good luck to all in your training!!

I will be down there.  Course looks a little like IMWI, no??  Is it as hilly as Kansas?

Should be a fun time for sure!  We are staying at the in-laws timeshare down there.  The whole family.  Making a little vacation out of it.

A friend of mine that did KS with me this year rode 20 miles of the Branson course last weekend and said the Branson course was MUCH more difficult.  The hills @ Kansas are rolling, the hills in Branson are very long and steep.

I am a first time HIM!

Are you looking for swim wave times?  Those won't come out until a week or two before the race.  As far as the saturday sunday schedule, all the 1/2's are about the same.

Friday and saturday are packet pickup days.  Saturday you will have to drop your bike off at transition by 5pm most likely. The only thing i am not sure about is how they are going to do the run transition since it is miles away from the swim to bike transition.  I am guessing we will have a run bag like we have in the full distance events and they will transport it to the other transition for you.  Not sure though.

I will be riding the course in a few weeks with my garmin and I will compare both the courses in terms of elevation gain, length of hills and % grade.  I'll let you know, but my thinking is that the hills will be much longer at branson.  But that also means much longer downhills too.

For anyone interested- there is an OWS race on August 28 @ the swim venue for the race.  500yd, 1mile, and 2 mile distances.  I will be swimming the 1 mile and then riding the bike course afterwards if anyone is interested in joining me.

Should be an awesome swim- the water in Table Rock is crystal clear.

The more I talk to people about IM Branson, the more people seem to think I am crazy for picking this one as my first HIM due to the hills.

They are beginning to get me worried!! Help!!!

I know there will be hills, and I know there will be downhills as well, but they way they are talking, sounds like it will be very tough!

Do not worry about the thought process of others.  You have signed up so now prepare, do your best, enjoy the day and kick butt.  The best plan is to prepare, train, practice "should do"race pace/ "not could do" race pace and fueling...

They are referring to the total amount of climbs we will be doing in addition to the 13.1.  So, look forward to 2700 feet of total climbs over the entire course.  The good news is you will descend that same amount as well and you can prepare.

Since you live in Memphis, I would highly recommend you ride through Lakeland and Arlington (RB's cyclery behind Sams on 64, has maps if you need one) as there are some relatively large hills that when combined over 50 miles total about 1300 feet of ascending.  You can also ride in Shelby forest where I have seen a several routes total about 1900 feet over 50-70 miles.

Go to map my ride and search these areas for hills to train on.

Also check out you tube for several course previews by ikentri and several others, so you can see the hills.

Hope this helps.

The tougher it is the more you have accomplished,,, just imagine the bragging rights you'll have once crossed the finish line.

Completed my first 60 mile ride this weekend. I am looking to get three or four more 60+ rides in before Branson! It was nice to know I can do the distance and still be able to mow the yard later that day!  LOL

Is anyone else confused about the bike course??  Do you go out and back on 465 twice and then out a third time before you take the 248 exit?  This is the only way it is close to 56 miles.  If you go out and back (1st loop) then out and exit on 248 (2nd loop) it's only 40 miles.

Also, does anyone know if the course is ride-able? I mean it's mostly on highway.  I am going to ride the course on sunday and hopefully it's not to busy.

Nevermind about the bike course question....They just posted new maps and routes.  It is changed a little but not much.

I checked out the course a month ago. It is rideable. The highway portion is two loops then a turn into town. There are 2 long hills going east on the highway. One is about 1.5 and the other is @1.8 miles long. They are a straight ascent of about 4-5% grade.  Most people ost be needing to ride aero going up but most also won't need any higher gearing to get up them. Slow and steady up and a screaming descent down.
The steepest climb is when you come back past the exit from the swim about 1/2 mile long.

Everyone that knows the lake said it usually cold around 72 degrees so it is more than likely going to be wetsuit legal and I will use mine if it is. Just makes the swim easier if you are not a great swimmer.

The steepest climb is when you come back past the exit from the swim about 1/2 mile long.

Just rode the course today...You are right about the length of the hills, but no way you are staying aero. They were more like 6-9% grades. Very fast down hills.  Ran out of gears on most downhills about 1/4-1/2 way down at around 40-45mph.  Fastest that i got up to was 47mph.

Going to be a slower course than kansas for sure.  The hard part about this course is that there is not one flat longer than 1/4 mile in the first 50 miles.  You can carry your speed, but not for very long.  Kansas you could carry your speed 3/4 of the way up the hill.  In branson the hills are soo long that you don't even make it 1/8 way up before you are in your small ring.  Most of the hills for me were around 9-12mph going up. Going west on the highway is easier i think.  But the climb up to the beginning of the loop on 76 is brutally long.

The only saving grace of this course is that when you turn onto the last highway to come into transition there is a mile or two of rollers, but the rest of the way is very fast downhills.  There is only one other hill coming in to T2, but nothing to worry about.  I bet you can pick up 1mph on your average coming into town.

Also, I would look at your average until at least coming back for your second loop.  The first 7 miles are hilly and slow and all uphill to get to the highway.  I averaged 20.9mph in Kansas and after today i am thinking i'll be happy with 19mph at Branson.  I'll post the profile when i get a chance.  If you have any questions let me know.

Room share:::
I have a room reserved at "The Branson Welcome Inn", reservation is for Friday check in, Sat., Sun.,  and Monday check out. My other party can not make it so that leaves me with an extra bed and space. The room is 2 queen beds non smoking. If your willing to split the cost ($100 your 1/2) let me know. Money will not trade hands until I hand you the room key.
Since I'm not familiar with the area and the start/finish line seem to be in different places, I'm not real sure how far from the race the hotel is. Through some mapping and Googling, I think its about 5 to 10 minutes from the start (not positive though).
Through PM's I will send you my phone number and we can discuss details.
Thanks
