Elite 4583 | Subject: RE: Thanksgiving to New Years Running Challenge Day 4: what was to be a nice 10 mile run turned horrible after one mile. I had my two dogs, Lola and Brutus, and my next door neighbor's dog, Ruger, along for the run as well as one of my cross country runners, Josey. A mile in Brutus turned on Ruger and viscously attacked him...Ruger is about 60 lbs and Brutus 85lbs. It took everything Josey and I had to kick, pull and scream to get Brutus off. Ruger fled home, bloody and limping. Long story short, my neighbors took Ruger to the vet,he has several puncture wounds and a wound to his front leg but will mend. I will take care of vet bill, of course, so glad he's ok. Brutus on the other hand, might be too aggressive to keep. He's a stray we've had since he was a puppy and we've seen this aggressiveness before but not to this extent. I've taken all three dogs running several times with no problem, but this was horrifying. I really think had we not got the dogs apart Brutus would have killed him. We'll figure out what to do tomorrow. I guess I got my mile in, just not the way I planned. |

I'm so glad Josey was there to help you and that Ruger is going to be okay. Poor thing. We had a dog once who was very aggressive towards other dogs. She was small (about 30 pounds), and it was easy to keep her away from others. But when my first son was born, she started growling at him before he was even thinking about moving around. She was gone the next day. Some dogs just don't play well with others. Ever. Edited by KansasMom 2012-11-25 9:37 PM |

Master 2770 Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Thanksgiving to New Years Running Challenge I was reminded this afternoon why I love running every day. Usually the first 1.5 - 2 miles are super sucky for me. But when I run every day, that sucky time shortens until I hardly notice any suckiness at all. I love that. It's just pure running joy from the beginning. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: Thanksgiving to New Years Running Challenge Kim, how is Ruger today? Has your dog Brutus been "fixed"? If not, you may want to try that. My brother-in-law had a Charpei or how ever you spell it and he started attacking my BIL's other dog. Then one day he was walking the dog on a retractable leash and a 9 yo boy came riding by on a bike and the dog broke he leash and bit the boy. We really love animals, dogs specifically but sometimes they can be mean and once they get the taste of blood in their mouth, they never change. Good luck on your decision, whatever it is, it will be hard. |

He has some staples in his front leg but will be OK. I'll visit today after school with some love and treats! We'll decide what to do today. Brutus has been fixed, so I'm afraid that aggressiveness is part of his nature. What you say is exactly right--now that he has a taste of blood I'm concerned for our other dog, Lola, or God forbid a child. He's too big a powerful to fight off. It will be hard, but we have to protect our other dog. Edited by ingleshteechur 2012-11-26 7:27 AM |

He was just not safe to be around. It was a super hard decision for me- but after two incidents it was not clear it was only time til something really bad happened. Hugs! That must have been terrifying to watch! |

Extreme Veteran 544 Shawboro, NC | Subject: RE: Thanksgiving to New Years Running Challenge Day 3 didn't end with any running, just lots of ladder climbing. Day 4 was 3.5 miles, with my daughter at my side. I really hope what they say about slow consistent runs helping out your speed is true! My daughter's pace of 13:48 is really easy, but I lose all ability to judge distance covered at this pace. Lol Day 5 will find at least 1 mile, but 2 are planned. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: Thanksgiving to New Years Running Challenge Go my mileage in, I know it looks like I'm not doing much and it bothers me too but I'm training for my 1st 1/2 marathon and my coach/boss/mentor/wife won't let me go to far to fast. I normally try to increase to fast and get injured. My history is shin splints and IT band issues. Quick question, how many of ya'll replace your shoe inserts with new ones. My shoes are getting toward the end of their life but a friend of mine who runs a LOT says he always replaces the shoe inserts and puts in good ones when he buys the shoes. The ball/joint whatever it is on one foot (3rd and 4th toe) feels like it is bruised. Also I just got a pair of Saucony with an 8% heel/toe drop and I love them. I've only worn them a few times and it does cause my calves to get sore but I'm working them in. What are ya'll's thoughts on shoes with a less than 12 percent drop whick I believe is about average? |

A few years ago I went to the Kinvaras and then to the Cortanas...in both shoes I had calf troubles that I was never able to get over, the severe cramping would always hit me. I worked into them slowly and all that, but I finally decided the low heel drop was just not for me. Went back to a regular Saucony and haven't had any issues at all. I know everyone is different, but for me the aggravation of repeated calf soreness/cramping just wasn't worth it. |

I've only worn them a few times and it does cause my calves to get sore but I'm working them in. What are ya'll's thoughts on shoes with a less than 12 percent drop whick I believe is about average? ahhhhh, shoes, now you are speaking my language. I have about 17 I am using now, maybe 10 I run in semi regular. I love them all. Shoes. Ahhhhhhh. They make me smile, what can I say. I like all neutral shoes, or even some with slight pronation control. In the past 2 years I have gone through the NB 1064 (I currently have 4 (!) yikes pairs in rotation (one has almost 1900km so it might have to go soon), I really loved those shoes) but they got a little heavy, then I tried the Kinvara 2, and oh my, LOVE them, I have 2 that I am working with now, a black and green pair as well as the Kinvara 2 eh! covered with Canadian flags. Then I went to the minimus trail which only has a 4 mm drop I think, got 2 of those too, I use them on the road as opposed to the trail. So I like little or no drop that supports a mid to front foot heel strike. But sometimes I take out the 1064s just for a little different feel. I also have a pair of Adidas feathers which are super light but have a higher drop of 10 mm. I also have a large collection of trail shoes but that is a different story. That said, I got a new favorite shoe that I am pushing on anyone who asks and that is the Hokas. I got the Stinson Tarmac, which is their road shoe. It is huge, beefy, but less than 11 ounces and still has a drop of 6 mm. So they feel close to the ground, even though they have twice as much foam as most shoes. I love them and am putting them on about 3 days a week. I also have the Mafate, their beefy trail shoe, which is good but made for serious knarly stuff and doesn't even feel that great on a gravel road. ETA: what makes the hokas great is that they really do help you with the pounding on your legs. They are lovely to run in but what I notice most is less soreness after the run. If you can see clear to spend 170 bucks on a pair of shoes give them a try. WHAT I THINK is that you should run in a bunch of different shoes with different drops that promote different running styles. Keeps your foot flexible and strong and reduces possible over use injuries. Edited by BigDH 2012-11-27 9:22 AM |
