Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mad Mutant Manatee Mentors 4--CLOSED Awesome, we have more cute doggie pics (thanks Jo and Scooby), Jon's on the road without telling us his number, and the Frog is back! Plus Ann-Marie has an awesome number and wisely told us, saving us time from having to stalk it down. OK, pod, so here's the situation: as part of my HM training plan, I'm to run a 10K race this weekend. I found a cheap one not terribly far away, but the problem is it is a VERY tiny race/field, as in last year only 27 people ran the 10K and the year before was only 39. Looking at the finishing times from last year, I will probably finish last unless I can edge out the 71 year old (if he races this year). On one level, I realize someone has to be last, but on the other hand, I have never been so certain that the likelihood of me being last is darn near 100%. I think this is my first stand-alone 10K, so I don't have any solid, previous times to go on, and if I go by my times in Olympic tris, well, I'm extra screwed. So just suck it up and go and race and be last? |

He worked on Silence of the Lambs and the character Dr Reid in Criminal Minds is based on him. He is proving to be a very funny and interesting speaker. Unfortunately, we have boring speakers this afternoon. So I will need this pod to keep me entertained this afternoon! |

Three easy 8:00 miles. I'm going to start some speedwork after the HM so I can shift to my next goal, which is a sub-20 5k. Anyone have advice on how to do that? Yes. Train for a marathon and run a 5K in a year or so. I'm not actually kidding. You're a fast runner but with (relatively) little base on your legs, especially recently. As for speedwork, feel free to (and you should do) run "sometimes hard" -- hills, strides. But at this point, I wouldn't add what most people think of as formal "speedwork." I need to learn what those things are, is what I'm saying. I can't work it in until that happens. I think I can hit my sub 20 goal without too much speed work. This year is def learning and marathon focused. Next year is going to be my speed year all around, with a sub 18 5k goal among others. Ah, she is wise, the almighty Yanti. Good move, my friend. Build base, take time, keep adding a bit here and there, and train consistently. By consistent, I don't mean the same thing every day, but something nearly every day. It is interesting, trying to figure out what people mean sometimes. I know that my "Speedwork" and Salty's are worlds apart. For her there is an obvious, scheduled, program with an actual, knowledgable coach having a solid goal in mind. For me it is a more free flowing, quasi scheduled thing, with a day that the effort is simply more focused on going faster. Not what most people call speedwork, but I'm not ready to jump into that yet. I'm barely ready to step into it. TLDR: What Yanti said.
Now the longer version. I think it's really important to establish a solid period of logging some consistent mileage and volume injury free before you start to think about speedwork. Even I am only on the very, very edge of what is considered traditional speedwork as I am training for a marathon so most of the stuff I am doing is long tempo/flow runs. As I enter my third year of running (OMG my 2 year runniversary is in MAY!!!!!!) I am going to drop down to shorter distance running and really start to work on my speed. So, even right now the stuff I am doing is not really relevant to developing 5K speed. Or I should say, it's not the most effective route. But, that being said, I have managed to consistently set PRs in the 5K WHILE marathon training. Just as Yanti said. I'm not running my 5Ks to my potential by any means, but that isn't my focus right now. And that is something else that you need to decide. I think while you establish a block of time logging injury free miles you should read some books because the second most important thing (behind consistent volume and mileage) is understanding what you are doing any why. I recommend Jack Daniels Running Formula. Edited by Asalzwed 2013-04-05 11:56 AM |
