Veteran 228 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club What I have noticed when I go out on the trails to run. People are running fast. They are not walking every 5 minutes they are not looking at the watch. THEY ARE RUNNING FAST WHEN THEY TRAIN.................. I just had to add this in. Running is no longer my favorite activity. I like SWIMMING. |

Extreme Veteran 541 Virginny | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I'm in! I've been working on this for a while. Here's a history: 2003 sprint tri (my first!)--14:16 pace November 2005 8k--11:13 pace April 2006 10k--11:20 pace May 2006 sprint--10:20 pace June 2006 mini sprint--12:22 pace Oct. 2006 olympic tri--11:42 pace I don't believe either the May or the June numbers. Really, I think the course distances are off! Especially since the May course was hilly and the June course was flat. I am signed up for an 8k next month. I'd like to break the 11:00 mark. We'll see how it goes. What's worked: 1) Losing 30 lbs. Though, frankly, I thought that should help more than it has. 2) doing a lot more running. I found that I wasn't training very consistently with running, b/c I don't like it. I have seen lots of improvement this year and feel like I finally have something of a "base." 3) ????? Do sprint workouts help? I haven't done intervals in quite some time... I remember when I was young, and things didn't jiggle so much, and breaking 10 min on a mile was easy. |

Expert 821 Golden, CO | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Hello All - I am just starting to run again after about a year off because of injuries, laziness, other things to do and many other excuses. When I was running I was doing about 12:00 minute miles. In Law School I could easily do 8:00 - that is my goal now..Actually my first goal is to get back to just being able to do a 5k without walking. Hopefully I can still qualify for the slow buggers running club since my running may not even qualify as slow but near non-existent. Anyway - good luck everyone..and make sure to keep posting your progress. |

Regular 82 Malvern, PA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Hey there fellow slow pokes! I started running back in June, and worked for all this time on distance. It got to where I was able to do a half marathon last month at a slow pace (~13 min/mile overall) and now I want to work on speed. I'm strictly doing 5k and under distances for now. My evil plan to become fast: intervals, once a week to start. I run about 3x a week between the other stuff i do. I did a set of intervals about 3 weeks ago which was: jogged one mile Went all out 800 m in 3:45 jogged 1/4 mile All out 800m in 4:15 Pain, pain, pain. BUT, I held an 8 min/mile pace when I'm usually a 12 min/mile runner at best. I ran easy tonight but plan to repeat the intervals thursday night. Anybody want to do it with me and post the results here? My goal is to drop the secret passwrod eventually. |

I copied this interval out and would like to try it next week........I'll let you know how it goes............I'll probably do it next tuesday..........your picture looks really scary............Why did you choose that creature? |

Regular 82 Malvern, PA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club your picture looks really scary............Why did you choose that creature? What do you mean creature? I can't help how I look!! How dare you! Best of luck on the HM next week. I just got through my first and it was really a blast. Since it was a big event with 12000+ people I actually got to pass a few even at the 'wait up' pace. If you're anything like me you're going to be thrilled with yourself when its over. Don't try to do the intervals too soon after the race though. I think I waited at least 5 or six days. Let us know when you do them though, I need to make some people suffer along with me. |

Veteran 228 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club widgeon you are doing great.........this will be good support for all of us.............I run my half sunday and I will try and do the interval wednesday. I really would like to speed up my pace times. So this will be a great help..............I'll post when I do the interval..............sappho96. You are getting faster....................jdbadger your pace is good.............I think that getting faster is going to take practice. I am planning to spend the next 4 weeks on my bike a lot and working on this interval workout widgeon gave us....................Talk to everyone soon..........I decided to print out a pace band for a 11:03 pace for the half marathon. My last pace for RocknRoll half was a 11:25 so I am going to try and go a little faster since the weather will be cooler. Wish me Luck and I will be really try to concentrate on this pace......... |

Regular 113 Taos, New Mexico | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Okay, I'm finally starting to feel like the run isn't sooo much of a struggle. Ran in high school but have never managed to really get back into it in the 20 yrs since. Last weekend I was talked into a 10 mile trail run and I actually finished it!!!!! Time was 2:04, for almost a 13 minute mile (which is what I always assumed I trained at on short runs). I managed about an 11 minute mile for my first sprint in September, and last week I did about 8:15 on a little mile loop near my house (that was a push). I remember when it wasn't a big deal to do a 7 minute mile to qualify for track! I think my goal will be to break 8 minutes for one mile by.... oh, Nov 15. |

Master 2629 brummie land | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club greetings slow buggers. saph has returned from france in one piece and i managed my longest run ever - 4.36 miles. it was meant to be 4 but i missed my turning...oops! i ran past moo-cpws, very loud scary growlers, and even had a jet plane practice over head (yes that bit is a lyric). it was hilly (maybe some peeps would describe it as undulating...)! but good fun and i managed a 12m25s pace - not bad. oh and i've agreed to do an undukating 10k the week before xmas - lol!
how are the rest of you doing? |

Regular 113 Taos, New Mexico | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Wow! Great job, Karen. Way to go! I needed that inspiration; Ijust decided a few weeks ago to run a half marathon Nov 4, but have been questioning the wisdom of that decision! My 30 min run today hurt. I did manage to finish a 10 mile trail run last weekend, though (had never run that far), so I figure I can do 13 on the flat... um...? |

Regular 82 Malvern, PA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Congrats Chirunner. Was that a first marathon? I don't know if I want to try a distance longer than the half mary. I knew when I was done that I was glad it wasn't halfway. Intervals tonight: 1 mi strong pace 800m 3:54 1 mi slow 800m 4:15 No improvement over the last set. Lots of could haves going around in my head over that second 800m. Seems like I'm only making these interval workouts every two weeks. If I don't do it next thursday I'll try a run at the strongest pace I can keep up over 5K. I'll be pretty happpy with sub-11 minutes. Either way I feel more like a 'runner' all the time now that the fall is coming on here and the weather is getting cold and the days short. |
