bshehan - 2006-09-23 10:53 PM

so, I'm wondering if I qualify for the club.  I recently ran my first 10K at a 9:00min/mi pace, and did a 5K training run a little faster than that, BUT those were pretty much all-out efforts.  Check my logs, I almost never run faster than about 10:30min/mi.  Usually, I'm around 11:00min/mi.

So what is the standard exactly:  COMPLETELY unable to run faster than 10:00min/mi, or MOSTLY unable to run faster?   Technically, I am capable of doing it, but it kicks my @$$, so I hardly ever do it, and really I FEEL  like a slow bugger.

Would love to join, but I understand if you tell me to take a 10:00min/mi hike.

its up to you bshehan but imho a 10k at 9min pace is fast. yeh maybe your training runs are slower but for most of us training runs that speed do not = a 9min/mile pace. i am not in a position to say yes or no but imho the spirit of the slow buggers running club is to encourage those of us who can't hit the 10min/mile even in races. but that's just my opinion.*

maybe you and kathy g (soon to be joined by possum...) could set up a slightly less than slow buggers but not scarily fast like marmadaddy et al running club?

*have been drinking cobra all night so maybe i'm too quick to pass judgement, but they're just my thoughts.

Or even to post not just the training they are doing, but what their long term goal is and how motivated/dedicated they are to get there, and how they plan to do it.

Don't forget, even the fast runners had to start somewhere and didn't necessarily think they could break a barrier.

(Okay, I'll leave and go be "fast" somewhere else now .... .... )

that's a great idea - thanks daremo - yes you may leave now

my long term goal is to run a half mary; and to get sub-10mins in a 5k race i feel very motivated at the moment as i sucked so badly at the run during my super-sprint try and i hated it. i am currently following the hal higdon 10k plan for a race in december and its going well so far.

anyone else?

p.s. mathsgeek - i'll ring you tomorrow ok?

Yay, I found a home here!

Hi, My Name is Christine, and I am SLOW!

I can do a 10 min/mile, but only one of them

Did my longest distance today in a race, 5 miles, and came back to my old friend, 12 min/mile pace.

Maybe we should make t-shirts, that way there's no mistake

ETA: My husband, standing behind me "helping" just suggested that he make us all t-shirts with an orange triangle on the back... mooooving through...

I think I've found my people! I dream of cracking 10 min miles, but my last run was more like 12+ min miles.
My spouse is a super fast son-of-a-Geordie (any wankers here should know what that is ) He's about 50% faster than me. I don't even eat his dust, it's settled by the time I reach it!

welll, please don't kick me out of the club!  I smoked my 5k. I can't believe it, but I think the whole train slowly thing works!  I actually used HR data for a few weeks, and even doing some fast walking to keep it in the correct zones, and somehow I still managed a 27:55! That's a fraction faster than 9 min miles! woo hoo!  but it may have been a fluke, so we'll see, I am determined to stay the course (ha) and keep training methodically, slowly, even if it feels embarrasignly slow, taking rest days, etc.

Oh, I still lost to both boys! I am 60 bucks poorer!

WOW - Congratulations Possum!!!!

I'd like to join in on this club.  I've spent the summer struggling through 12-15 m/m.  I'm slower this year than I was last year - I think from trying to build speed without having the base under me.  I've slowed down - still struggling, but thinking about finding a local coach to help me with my form.

I did a 1/2 mary in 2005 in 2:35 - just under 12m/m and the same 1/2 a couple weeks ago in 2:46 - just over 12.5 m/m.  I originally planned to do the full mary, but the miles just about killed me.

KathyG is a HUGE inspiration to me - she just finished a 5 k averaging UNDER 8 m/m and last year she was struggling along at 12 m/m.  I'm convinced that for us slow people, there are no shortcuts, just have to keep plugging away building a base and SLOWLY increasing speed/distance.

Tam

So what is the trick to getting faster? What is working for you? What has not worked for you? Please share.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum.  I can run faster than 10:00 per mile for a 10-K race, though not much.  Trouble is, due to advancing age I get slower each year and very soon 10:00 will be my pace for 10-K

So the answer is, you get faster for a while and then you regress.  I think I've reached the top of the pyramid and am heading down the other side!

I'm doing a sprint tri on Sunday (my first!), then all road races for a while. A bunch of 5ks, but the biggies are a 15k Nov 4, a half-mary (Gasparilla) Feb 18, and a marathon (Marine Corps) in October next year.

I'm following Hal Higdon's training plans for all the races and not sweating the speed much, just trying to build a base and be comfortable. I have a goal of a 30 minute 5k but I don't know if I'll be able to get there this season. As a new runner (only since June this year) I think lots of patience is in order!

I've started trying to run 4x a week for the last few weeks but, with some extra swimming too, I was getting too tired so I've cut back to 3x for this week. I'm hoping to get back to 4x next week and keep the swimming reduced enough to maintain that level. There's a local 10k run in November that I might aim for, though I haven't registered yet.

It's generally recognized that "speed work" is the best way to get faster.  The theory goes something like this;  say you can now run 11:00 per mile and you want to run 10:00 per mile.  Until you teach your body what it feels like to run a 10:00 pace, you'll always be fighting that barrier and never get faster than the speed of your daily runs.  So you do intervals at a faster pace, running at 10:00 for a few minutes, then several minutes of recovery at a slower pace.  Repeat.  Repeat.

Far be it from me to be coaching or advising anyone on running workouts, being as how I am pathetically slow myself, but if you Google things like running intervals, you'll surely come up with a host of training plans that will help increase your overall speed.

any tips on pre-race food for morning runs...if you read my log it has a race report of sorts and you'll see why i'm asking

Tell that to the 62 year old guy that beat me in a 5k last year by about 20 seconds (a 3.2 mile race actually, and he almost broke 20 minutes).

If you want to be a faster runner you need to run faster. I believe that. All these long slow paced runs do not make me faster. Its when I mentally say Hey pick it up. I am really trying to understand how to get faster. I have done Hills, I have done track work outs. I just think It is moving your body faster and training faster. Happy Training!!!!!
