Have yet to read the race reports but very proud of all our girls racing and the effort they put into their respective races. Some wise words have already been spoken on which i cannot improve. Just very proud of you all and glad to be part of this special group of people. Yanti, you attention seeker, is there nothing you can't catch. (Twice!). Hope you get through it without too much suffering. Image drifting through my mind of distressed maiden being fanned with palm leaves by hunky surf piglets. Some lovely pics kicking around. I will have to try to get my stoneage brain trained to this computer age then i will be able to put some of my own on here. cough cough ... that's actually not too far from the truth I mean, I do live in surferville, so they're the closest ones available to help, right? Jesus, no kidding. You even have me feeling sorry for you and offering my services. .I don't think I count as hunky but I do surf... You're like ... spirit of hunky surf piglet. Yes. It's a mindset. |

New user 13 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Back last night from a family weekend in Western New York (mom-in-law's 80th birthday). Found myself entering the Buffalo Half Marathon on June 30th with sis-in-law. Not sure if it's the smartest idea after ankle sprain 3 weeks ago, but couldn't resist a finish line on the 50 yard line of the Bill's stadium! (plus it was a great schwaggle deal). I figure I'll just take it easy and enjoy it as a social event. First outdoor exercise since sprain this morning, 5k race walk. Still had to hobble going downhill, but for the most part, the race walking was pain-free (feels better than regular walking). Got in a swim as well. |

I think I should probably do it more often, but I avoid it cause it hurrrrts. Maybe if I did it more regularly it wouldn't so much? So do you roller doo-ey yourself when you are sore? Or after hard workouts? Or on a set schedule? |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD I think you are supposed to do it after a workout when you're muscles etc. aren't too cold/non-stretchy, but I almost NEVER do it. I had a sports massage last Tuesday and was in SERIOUS pain when she was working on my piriformis/ITB...if I used my roller more often, I would save myself a lot of pain! At least once a week? I'd like to hear what everyone else says too. |

Oh, also my friend has a "stick" so if I am at her house I use it too There is really no rhyme or reason to it. Probably more than anything it's a nice mental relaxation/cool down from my workout. |

I can see why you signed up. As I recall when I sprained my ankle in high school it took quite a while to heal but I was good about doing my physical therapy and was back to Pole Vaulting by the end of the season. Have you got the "go-ahead" to start running from your doctor? I would ice and elevate after my runs (or speed-walks) if I were you, too. |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD It's already been said, but great work to everyone who raced this weekend! EVERYONE was a champ in some respect - take away what you can from the experience and put it towards the next outing. Yanti, rest up and get better - we need you back at full speed for all the encouragement and wisdom. Felicia - OMG tornadoes! I'm so glad to hear everything is ok. Salty - Seattle looks gorgeous! I really want to do a trip to the Pacific NW, it looks lovely and so outdoorsy. I personally had a lovely weekend. Saturday I did the indoor computrainer interval class for an hour (that was HARD), then horseback riding (mostly without stirrups, i-yi-yi). THen off to Boston for drinks on the deck and beerfest, FUN! SUnday was lazy, very unseasonably warm here. Laid around (very tired from the beer outing!) then read on the porch. Today was a beach day - over 80!!! WE walked there and back, and went for a walk down the beach, that was the extent of my exercise, lol. Then ice cream, first of the season, yum! (chocolate with reese's cup and peanut butter chunks). Good day! It makes me not want to go back to work EVER! |

You can hike a mountain, ride your bike along the sound, kayak through the house boats on Lake Union and still have time to visit a brewery..or two or three in just a day. It sounds like you had a very nice weekend! Boston eh, so does that mean you live in Massachusetts? I forget? My cousin lived in Cambridge while he was in school and he speaks incredibly highly of the area, specifically Boston. He will be moving back at the end of this summer (JUST in time for me to have a place to stay when I run the Marathon next spring ) |

It was sunny with cloudy periods, about 60F. Little bit of wind, but nothing like last night (nor like the midwest...) I was very happy with all aspects of my race, but especially my swim. I did discover that I drift right when swimming in OW, so have to work on that. But, I was able to do all freestyle, unlike my first race, kept my breathing under control. Had one part where I was starting to lose my breath, but was able to slow my stroke and regain control. Improvements on the bike and run as well! http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=435371 Great job! You had a great swim time, even with the slight drift. Controlling the breath takes a lot of discipline. Congrats on the improvements in all three areas. Thanks. I was actually really surprised at my swim time. It was 10-15 secs faster than I am in the pool. Either I was really moving because it was so frackin' cold, or my watch froze up . |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Just thought of something else I wanted some help with. After any hard ride, my right gracilis (inside of thigh) is very sore. Always only my right. Can anyone tell me why this might be and/or how to fix it? I assume I am using my right leg more; I have gotten the advice to just get more ride time in, but if I am doing something wrong, I would like to fix it. Or with more will my left leg just get stronger and even things out? |

Front scull hands are stretched out in front palms down - quick out and in with hands never letting go of the water. mid scull same idea but hands below chest, elbows up fingers pointing down (this is very hard and your hands should hurt after) Otter scull push hands back belly button straight down body line (like the end of doggy paddle) Front scull is fine and I move pretty fast but the other two even with fins it's like you're going backwards! |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD The drills are to get a good feel for the catch of the water. Your hands, forearms and triceps really burn after so I imagine it's doing some good! Because it's mainly your hands working you have to really engage core muscles to maintain good horizontal position. We have some real leg sinkers in our squad and they struggle a lot with these drills - I am lucky my legs float on the top (something to do with my big !)

I assume I am using my right leg more; I have gotten the advice to just get more ride time in, but if I am doing something wrong, I would like to fix it. Or with more will my left leg just get stronger and even things out? My first two thoughts were (1) foam roller and stretching 2-3 times a week combined with increased riding and (2) bike fit. It's fairly typical of me to have some muscle complaints early in the season. For me, this typically manifests itself in my calves feeling crampy during the last 15 minutes of my ride. There is a signal light there and when I stop and restart, my calves complain. This only happens in the spring and goes away once ride duration and frequency increase. If my piriformis complains, it's normally the next day. Too much desk sitting. http://www.irunnerblog.com/health/runner-therapy-pesky-piriformis/ I usually foam roll my IT band and to some stretches that I learned in physical therapy a long time ago. The article above shows one of the popular stretches and foam roller techniques. |

What you really need to do is find out WHY this is happening (yep, I realize that's exactly what you asked, heh), and then you can fix it. The reason I recommend trying out a saddle adjustment first is that a) it's a common contributor to a L/R discrepancy, but most of all b) world's easiest fix if that's the problem (and the solution diagnoses the problem). If not, no harm no foul. You just move the saddle back and move on to Plans B, C, etc. |
