George -sounds like some really solid training. As for getting fast running, consider doing some intervals or fartleks, just don't over due it.

Rich - congrats on the bike? We've all fallen due to not unclipping. Just don't put your arm out to break your fall. Land on your shoulder. Your unbroken wrist will thank you.

just cant seem to get it back together, now I'm sick, flu, temperature, chest infection and the worst thing is that I'll be travelling for work at the beginning of the following week which should affect the training ss well. it looks like March will be a very weak month.

Hope you feel better soon. Take your running gear on your trip and try to hit the treadmill for 30 minutes a couple of times if you can.

Stick with it. Unfortunately these times comes around once in a while, I think its just part of the challenge of triathlon. I've just come out of 4/5 weeks of absolutely no training due mainly to illness. Try running while you're travelling, beats sitting around waiting for room service to arrive!

Subject: Recovery days
Hey everyone. I've been doing one of the Winter Maintenance training plans from here since November. There hasn't been a recovery day scheduled since January, so I haven't taken one. I haven't really been concerned about it since there's never consecutive days of doing the same sport. I had a really lousy swim on Friday. It was supposed to be a TT, but my legs were just so tired I bagged the TT and did some pull sets to give my legs a rest.

Do you all make a point to take a rest day every week? I'm about to start my Olympic training plan next week.

managed to get a 15mile bike ride in, flat, flat flat route but I took it really gently. then done 2 miles on the treadmill, also just gently and I feel better for it.
will def take my trainers and try to fit in a 30min run, but I'm not sure it'll be possible, but if I can do it at least one day thats a bonus.
Chris, how are you finding getting back to training? are you much slower than before?

Yes, I take a full day off every week for recovery. Most people should to let your body heal.

Mike - I like running intervals but I've not done them in awhile so I'll add them back into my workouts again.

Tay - Get well soon and don't push yourself too hard until you're feeling better - no time trials for sure.

Rich - I was a really slow learner with my pedals. I think I fell 5 times before I learned to unclip well before I needed to.

Donna - Everyone has bad training days at times. I've had bad days in all three sports recently. Sometimes you just need to take a break. I take a full recovery day each week (Sunday) although today I ran for 90minutes to start my recovery day. Rest, nutrition, hydration and sleep are just as important as swim/bike/run. Taper is an art that is not easy to master. This week is my easy week so I'm only working out another 6 or 7 hours then the next three weeks will be all over 10hours.

I ran 12km today and I felt slow and heavy not as comfortable as I would have liked but when I looked back at my first 12km run a couple weeks ago, I ran a fair bit faster today so I'm fairly pleased with the result.

Yo Fellow Trainees

I really thought even though i have minor injury this week because of last week's crash i can still complete my Tp this week. i felt week after my long run today and i need my 1 day recovery tomorrow,i missed a short swim this week. Funny thing today my 20 yo Niece went for her first Tri no training except for a background in basketball and soccer, smoked my Sprint numbers.

@George
your run is not bad 12 min/ mile is good at HIM running pace. Im sure you are fired up now to get on the road with your horse.

@Mike
thanks for the HM training plans.

@Donna
You got solid numbers there. its ok to give 1 day a week break.

@Tay
Get well soon.

@Rich
getwell soon too.

@Steph
Pretty cool training in camp. Good training experience. I dont ill ever be comfortable in a group.

@Chris
Still going for the full mary?

@Anna
Good choice on sticking with the HIM alone.

Happy Training Everyone!'

Getting back into it was easy once I got started, but my brain took a little convincing for the first solid effort.

In terms of performance, I have clearly lost more bike fitness than run fitness. For me this is because I have a stronger running base built up. The better your base in any gievn discipline the slower you lose fitness when you miss sessions or take a break from training. This is what I've been told and it certainly holds true for me. I've only been back training for about 10 days so I can't really tell you how fast it comes back.

Hi everyone,

I'm commisserating with everyone who's been sick, I've had an annoying cold/sinus thing happening. Not enough to warrant a day off work in bed but enough to make me wonder if I should be training through it...I did take a day off here and there, but felt I had to run the 10km race I was entered in yesterday. Luckily the run seems to have cleared my sinuses a bit, and after a rest day today I feel almost back to normal. And I was pretty happy with my time: 1:06, not a PB but not too bad considering I've only been running again the past month or so.

Donna, yes def take a day off a week.When I'm a bit flat I take one day in 4 off, it really helps the recovery and I feel it makes the workouts more useful.

Hi Everyone -

Was out of town for work last week. I'm back and going to try and ramp up training again, and be less AWOL from here.

This season I'm focusing on running. My goal is to do a 5k in under 31 min. Most recent 5k was a turkey trot in 32:08. Seems totally doable, except that I've put on 20 lbs and I'm depressed about that. Lesson learned: Don't eat like you're training for a HIM when you are NOT training for a HIM! haha!

Anyway... this week's plan is to do 5 runs: 60 min, 2 x 40 min, and 2 x 30 min. I don't think I've ever in my adult life done 5 runs in 1 week. So we shall see... I'm following the April/May run challenge. I have a 5k coming up the end of April. After that, I really need to plan my season.

It happens. Best to rest up and get healthy again, then you can get back up to speed quickly.

Carlo - I am keen to get riding outside but our weather is borderline at best so far and there is lots of gravel on the roads so everyone is waiting for the road shoulders to be swept clean. I'll take my bike in to the LBS for a spring tune-up tomorrow and then I'll start hoping for a windless day. We have a lot of strong winds here so I try to ride out into the wind then ride home with the wind but it usually winds up being a headwind both ways!!!

As for your niece - wouldn't it be nice to be 20 again, eh!

Anna - I'll be very happy if I can run my 10K (April 13th) in 1:06. What is your 10K PR time? (just out of interest).

Miche - I too have a goal to run 5K under 31min or 10K under :62 (not in 3 wks though). So, when are you planning to do another HIM?

That's a fair whack of running in a week! You'll be sub-31 in no time at that rate

George, my best ever effort at a 10k was just a little faster, 1:03. It was around the time I hit my fastest 5k time too, which was 28:52. Then it all went bad as I pulled a calf through overuse....Lesson learned. I'm still hoping to manage sub-60 for the 10k but I'm approaching it a lot more slowly now .

Hi, I am a high school football coach of 30 years, married to beautiful lady as of one year ago, and we have 5 adult children and one granddaughter.
I am 51, about 6'4", was 247lb rt now, I have lost about 12lbs in last month and half, need to lose about 15 more for this summer's events. So I am feeling better. I am sorta a Newbie, I ran my first sprint almost 2 years ago, about drown in pool because they didn't have us staged according to time, and I didn't get 20 meters before some girl swam right straight over top of me. LOL Shock to my cool calm stroke!!! Hyperventilation and slight panic followed along with swallowing a half gallon of pool water. Well I was at least hydrated for bike and run. All in all I loved the race after i managed to survive the swim. Shortly there after moved to a location in Kentucky where it was unsafe to bike, and no place to swim so training dropped off, and of course body weight went up.

I have been working hard over last month and half on my swim, I just got me a swim coach, she is killing me but it is definitely helping my stroke and conditioning. I must be doing something right now with my stroke, my lats are killing me. Biking is my favorite event although my size is a major hindrance on hills, just don't have enough leg strength to carry me and this gorilla on my back up the hills. My running is getting better as my conditioning improves, same problem as bike, body to big for my wheels right now.

I have my first Tri of the year in 12 days in Atlanta. My goal is to finish and humbly I must say not finish last Not sure if I will achieve 2nd one after looking at my times, oh well.
I am setting goal of 3 or 4 Sprints this spring and summer and be able to handle open water swim by end of summer, and then maybe eventually do an Olympic Tri. To say I am anxious about the open water swim after my last tri experience is understatement, but I hope to build confidence and work through it with help.

I appreciate any encouragement and advice I can get, need to make the next 50 years good ones.

God Bless
Coach

Welcome to the group, Coach!

I don't really have any advice for you at this time, as I am just training for my first sprint. It sounds like you are doing everything right though! I totally understand your fear after that first experience, but I would just use that as a learning experience for future races.

I have been out of my routine for about a week and a half now. I'm going to a cycling class tomorrow and hope that boosts me back into my routine.

Not any time soon! Haha! HIM training took over my life. I do have a job and kids I have to give a little attention to. No, no chance I'll make the 31 min goal at this next race. Need to find one in May or June, and then another in Aug or something to have a chance. Maybe by the turkey trot this year!

Did a 30 min run this morning - in the SNOW! in March! in Virginia! Crazy winter won't end.

Welcome, Coach! Yes, sore lats is a good sign for swimming right! Sounds like you have a good plan and a great attitude. I think all of us can relate at least one time we were swimming in a tri and panicked because of something (or maybe nothing)! Hydrated for the bike and run, lol!

Happy Belated St. Patricks day everyone. Been out of town (and out of training) for the last week but got back in the gym yesterday. Bad news is it looks like I need to give the quad muscles a bit more time to heal since they were still burning but got some good advice on better stretches and icing to help. Good news is I did find a decent deal on a Cannondale CAAD8 on craigslist and now have my first roadbike. Snow is melting and temps are at least in the 20's now by me so may be able to ride it soon!

Now here comes a newbie question though. Didn't even think about the pedals and shoes that I will also need to purchase. Any suggestions there for someone starting out?

Howdy all ... finally got in some saddle time on Sunday, and ouch ... it felt slow because it was slow.  Oh well for me it was my first ride of the season outside of the March 8th race.  With having to wait up for the daughters in the race, the race was more a cruise than a race.

Regardless, on Sunday I had a nice mix ... some nice hills, some sweat, and warmer weather - all were very welcome

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
