I've always been an exceptionally healthy person and don't want to do anything unnecessary, as my time is valuable, but I want to be sure I am doing everything I should be doing and I really have no idea what that is. Is there a comprehensive list of things/frequencies I should be getting screened for, especially as I get older? I imagine this has to be a little specific given my family history and the way I live my life. It seems so overwhelming. About the only thing I do regularly is a flu shot.

As a card carrying member of the "turn your head and cough" group, I feel unqualified to help on this.

Pap smear every 2 years

Breast screen every 2 years

I'm supposed to book a colonoscopy coz my dad has had bowel cancer but i've been putting it off....should have had it after the radioactive poisoning.

Dentist - useless, when i have a toothache.

Should also look at skin cancer check especially here in Australia - you should to as you are so fair.

That's it.

Oh when the HIM is done in 3.5 weeks I'm booking a heart health check - before training for IM.

Boom

my 2 cents:

Due to my mom's recent issues, and as she has "put off" the whole colonoscopy thing (she doesn't want to feel violated); I say suck it up and get it done. Better to find something sooner rather than later. it sucks, but tough bananas. Yes, I will be telling the same to her, as she is STILL saying she will not get it done.

I had a breast lump removed at the age of 16--I SHOULD have a mammogram done yearly, but the health professionals still say it is 'unnecessary' at my age--Breast exams are seriously important--regardless of size or age. If nothing else, do the self exam--when I found mine, it was marble sized. (I then waited for 6 months to say anything to anyone cause I was afraid...thankfully, it was benign. It was surgically removed with no issues. Apart from that I am really silly when I am being knocked out...)

As for the others, yes. Every 1-2 years just get all the pipes checked, so to speak. Chances are stuff will be all good.

Eyes and teeth 'should' be once a year, minimally....though I am really bad about following that myself....

My 2 cents to add here--if you do not have a regular primary care physician you should talk around to people in your areas to find out who they go to and what they like/ dislike about the practice---and if they take your insurance.  Having a regular primary care instead of hitting whomever happens to be in the clinic makes a big difference particularly if there are any long term chronic health issues or concerns.

Take advantage of any wellness points your insurance offers you by not smoking and keeping your weight in check--getting regular check ups lab work as indicated....

Salty and experienced marathoners.....How much reorganization on my training plan for the half marathon on 8/31?  I am in a drop back week.  Next week (race week) has me bump up to a total of 36 miles (4-7-4-7-14)  the training plan has race week as 4 runs total 26  (4-5-5-13)  I don't want to do 2 weeks recovery in a row then not really have another drop back until the end of the month.

A drop back week is 36 miles???? Holy h3ll what am I doing to myself here?  I WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN.  even if the run starts to improve and the suck factor goes away.

I don't have a choice.  I have a chronic disease that requires me to go to the doctor as often as every 12 weeks.  I have to make time to get the blood work done, wait for a specialist, etc.  If I can do that as often, the other routine visits are a lot easier.

You definitely want to talk to a primary care doctor to see what tests you need and when.  For example, my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer at 43.  Her oncologist recommended I get a colonoscopy at 30, and then every 5 years after.  Lucky me.

It's one of those things - the earlier you start going and getting in the habit, the easier it is and the more likely it is that things are caught early.

I had forgotten about the colonoscopy stuff... yep, I've had 2 of those already though for a different reason, I'll never forget being in the "recovery" room with a bunch of others that had just had the azz-cam done and we were all told to just keep farting.  We were a very musical group.

I'm taking two pacers for each km of the swim, one for each 10km of the bike, two for each 5km of the run.

The challenge should you choose to accept is to virtually race with me and cheer me on, and in turn I shall be thinking of you beside me, speaking with you and praying for you during that part of the race.

You don't have to be awake--you can send in advance or hell even after if you forget--Spirit knows no bounds of time or place.

THANK YOU!!!!

Done! I'll be posting up assignments after I open it to, uh, general entry

I stumbled on this short little video today when trying to find a pic of a super dorked out triathlete for Salty.  It's two minutes long, and hit me just right.  Apologies if you've already seen it.

Which is a spoof on the longer, but also funny,

Youch, this race hurt.  It was all the bike, and I wasn't ready for a 20 mile rolling course.  The swim was good.  I finally felt comfortable in the open water - victory.  I only pity-walked once - victory.  I might even have a decent average speed on the bike, but that's what did me in.  I haven't had a run hurt like that since my first 5k.  But I persevered, and my second lap was faster, and I ended up feeling pretty good on the run, though it was death earlier.

The race report cometh.

lol...yeah, it's a trip.  The doctors and nurses are so blase about it!  When I worked at Epic Systems (Madison-based company making EMR software), I went down to Northwestern for a week to help train the nurses.  One day, I was in the post-colonoscopy unit.  It was an experience!

I'm TOTALLY crashing this party! (well, not really, I had an invite

First and foremost let me say I'd never heard of Betty Designs blueyedbikergirl so I just waltzed over to their website and I LOVE IT!

The name? MtnBIkerChk or MBC for short. Or Randee for real. I turned 40 this year and for some reason I figured it would be a good idea to try some triathlons. I've done 9 sprints and number 10 is on the books for September. Next year I'm scheduling an Oly and a HIM and I'm an Internet junkie and could surf about swimming, running and biking all day long - and it looks like you all do so here I am!

Of course today is the 1 day I won't be at my desk all day so go ahead, poke at the new kid and I'll have to respond later tonight. I'll even give you a topic to start with: I'm really bad about posting my workouts on BT but everything goes into garminconnect so if you're really interested you can check me there. Otherwise I will sit down and put it into BT. I'm only 2 months behind
