Are you asking about WHEN to shift while you are riding at the appropriate time? It's based off of "feel" or how easy/hard it is to pedal. If you base it off cadence, then you should be around 80 to 100 revolutions per minute (for one foot to make a complete circle when pedaling). You want to be as comfortable as possible, not winded (except for hills, which is given). If the pedaling is TOO easy, then shift up one or two. If pedaling is making your legs hurt or it's hard to pedal, then shift down. If you have a tri bike, stay in aero as much as you can to reserve your energy. Standing up and pedaling up a hill should only be done if you are racing and want that power, or have to get up a hill faster, but, you burn more energy. I hope this helps. it does help Phil. thanks. i can do what you describe on my hybrid no problem. OK. sissy that i am. it has numbers on the components, so i can see 'where' im at, shiftingwise. but this bike, im 'lost' i keep whining, i want my numbers back. waaaaaaah. ill get it, im sure. the more im on the bike, the better handle ill have. it just seems like im working harder on the hills (this is a full carbon bike mind you) and that im running out of gears before i get to the top of the hills, 'quicker' than on my hybrid. though it cant be possible, cuz i have more gears on this bike than i had on my hybrid... patience and persistence. stacieb the more you ride and start switching the gears the more you will learn to love to bike...dont try to power up hills in your big ring that you should be riding in while in the flats...as you approach a hill start to shift to lower gears as you feel it get tougher and continue to do shift lower and lower as you continue to climb the hill...try to keep the same cadence you had when you were riding in the flats...and in a bigger chain ring. I have three chain rings in the front to help me old chunky self get up all those hills that seem to surround my house. I try to mainly ride in my mid ring (up front) when in the hills. It took me many many rides to get used to my road bike (gears can be super tricky and not sooo nice) I sucked at riding my road bike for a long time and I used to race mountain bikes for 5+ years almost every weekend. So, Ride Stacie Ride and remember to switch those gears soon you will be comfortable and will be switching all about with ease! |

Please note...I am in Canada....this was the definition of cold! looks cold... but so much fun!!!! i am toying with the idea of getting an OW wetsuit (why can't i have unlimited cashflow for outdoor toys!??) ... my surf wetsuit sucks for swimming in. it makes me feel like a walrus and not in a good way (but great for surfing) swim tomorrow. looking forward to it, been feeling super tired and stiff muscles, maybe too much lifting and not enough food. So, Ride Stacie Ride and remember to switch those gears soon you will be comfortable and will be switching all about with ease! Just a thought - if you are really struggling with the hills it might be that your bike has a standard double chain ring on the front. If you ride on hilly courses a lot it might be worth doing some research into swapping it out for a compact... gives yuo a few easier gears at the bottom end without sacrificing too much in terms of tough gears because unless you are sprinting out of the bunch in a crit, its unlikely you would use these couple of harder gears that often. In terms of the numbers... it gets easier you just have to trust what yuo feel! If yuo have a cycle computer than can give you some guidance too (like cadence as GPOL mentioned) Otherwise its just ride ride ride and get used to it! |

Expert 1007 Hattiesburg, Mississippi | Subject: RE: GIRLS TEAM THREAD May Swim Challenge Just got back from my swim, 2050 yds, most number of yards yet for one session! Was kind of having a bad day and was concerned it would creep into my swim, but I was able to use my swim to "drown" out the day! Should be able to get in an OWS on Wednesday evening and then one again at the race site on Friday before Saturday's race. I am very excited about my first tri! |

Elite 4372 Connecticut | Subject: RE: GIRLS TEAM THREAD May Swim Challenge Well, I didn't get to the pool today but I did play a softball game for the first time in 10+ years. They stuck me in left field. I'm an infielder. I screwed up most every ball hit to me. I did go 3-3 though. I walked and then had three infield hits. Beat out the throw each time! Made me feel good about my speed. I must say though, softball and tri training are like oil and water. They DON'T mix! I was sooooo winded running the based! Next game is Wednesday where I hope to redeem myself! Oh, I'm swimming tomorrow!!! |

Regular 72 Cambridge, MA | Subject: RE: GIRLS TEAM THREAD May Swim Challenge today is a SWIM DAY! but first i have to do my ridiculous 3 hour round trip Tuesday commute from Boston to Cape Cod and back again... I'll be so happy when I finally get in the pool tonight :D Does anyone have any good tips on building up speed in the pool? I have been using swim workouts (mostly intervals, not so many drills) from swimplan.com and they seem good, but I'm wondering if there might be a better way to try and get faster?? Have a great day ladies! |

Info here - PHIL. honestly. i have no idea which one i have, 10-24, 10-26, 9-23 but thanks for the link. ill be sure to figure it out, know that i know which one is better. thanks for the info. stacieb |
