But you will heal! And better to know the demons you are fighting, so there is that bright side. On another topic, loved reading Born to Run!! And yes, Jenn Shelton is the major bad-. But I gotta say, I was not overly sympathetic to their plight when they got lost and ran out of water and everything. I mean, it's one thing to be a bad- and another to be, well, stupid. That said I'd still love to run like her. And Ann Trason too. I found the book so inspiring. Didn't make me ready to ditch my running shoes (I've mostly been injury-free, so I'm not about to go monkeying with that at this point)... but it did make me think about the sheer joy of running. On days when I feel it, I run faster. On days when I'm forcing it, I don't so much. I can't imagine just going out and running and not clocking miles and splits and such, cuz I'm a little OCD with that. But I'm envious of those who can just go and run and come home 20 miles later feeling happy. A 20-miler, for me, involves planning of route, water, nutrition, sleep, family, etc. Definitely not something I do on a whim. But then again my 20-milers take a heckuva lot longer than Shelton's take!! seems you didn't get that whole "reading" part did ya. thanks for ruining the book for me and everyone else here who hasn't read it yet or is currently "reading" it. i hope YOU get jello in your stocking. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() soccermom15 - 2009-12-21 3:39 AM Morning everyone! Busy weekend for me. I had about 12 things on my list to get done and got through all but 2 of them. Luckily I had included my workouts in the list so was able to fit those in - otherwise they probably wouldn't have gotten done. I hear ya Janet as I have been battling sinus issues for the last week or so. It completely knocked me out last weekend and its just been nagging me since then so here's hoping you are able to fend it off! ![]() |

That's really a bummer, but hey...looks like you'll be spending a lot more time in the pool and on the bike until it heals ![]() Everyone - I am really starting to enjoy my swims and my endurance is increasing each time in the water. My breathing is getting better and I only have to stop to rest a couple of times for about 15 seconds in the course of swimming 500 yards. Can't believe it, but I love it!!! I feel soooooo good after my swims. Question: I need a wet suit. I have no idea about which brand to get, or if I should get a one piece or two piece? Long or short sleeves? I'm still drooling over some of the road bikes at my local bicycle shop. I wish I were rich. I want one so badly. I have a full XTERRA but have only used it a couple times. It works well for me. I was going to rent one for a race for $45.00 when they offered to sell me the same suit for $99.00, brand new. No brainer for me. They are always running specials. Keep your eyes open and you will see them. I regularly get emails from them too. I'll forward you one if I get one. Actually I'm thinking about getting a speedsuit from them for my non wetsuit legal races. Uh oh, Here we go again. Since it has been awhile since I have done it, I will make everyone aware, that I have this habit of double posting. I hit submit then remember I forgot to put something else and when I continue typing... bam! DP. It's kind of like a shank it golf terms. I'll give you a mulligan on this one Chris!! |

I signed up and then started a new job that takes away my leisure web surfing (the nerve!) but now that the posts are manageable I should be able to keep up ![]() So my issue is with my IT band which is causing pain around the outside of my right knee. Having never been injured before I am finding it difficult to take it easy. I have been trying to run through the pain but then I did a bit of reading and found out I am probably doing more damage. I saw a PA about a month ago and she said I could run through it but I am in a good amount of pain, which doesn't seem right. I think I am going to bite the bullet and seek out some PT. Hopefully I can get back to normal faster then foam rolling on my own. But now I am dealing with the real possibility that I won't be able to run my planned marathon at the end of March. I hope I can at least do a 1/2 marathon but I also don't want to injure myself further and jeopardize my tri season (2 HIMs on the calendar!) Anyone had experience with this? |

I hope I can at least do a 1/2 marathon but I also don't want to injure myself further and jeopardize my tri season (2 HIMs on the calendar!) Anyone had experience with this? I would not recommend running through pain, especially significant pain. I have done it and you are right, it sets you farther back than if you backed off to heal. All is not lost, if you act now you can still run that race. First, when does the pain start? right away? afer a set amount of miles? When I had this, I could run up to 9-10m before the pain set in. My approach was to run less each time while working on stretching and findng the root cause of the problem. Running past that point only slows healing or worsens the problem. I also iced the area after every run. Second, trigger point work. Do you have a TP quad roller or TP massage ball? If not, I would get them. If you have a tennis ball it can work in conjunction with a foam roller. Lay on your side, take the roller or ball and place it about a palms length from the top of your hip. Apply your body weight as pressure? does it hurt? it should. Continue to apply pressure until it subsides and then roll all the way down the area--upper thigh to just before the knee. Place the ball at the tender spot of the knee and apply the same pressure. You may feel referral down the leg which is not uncommon. Do this twice a day. When it stops hurting you are making progress. Third, stretches. I think this video shows some of the best. Around 1:53 is the pigeon which I do everyday. Fourth, find the source of the problem. There is often a gait issue or muscle imbalance that drives the problem. It might also be due to ramping up too quickly, running on slanted roads or something else. My advice is to get the evaluation by a PT who works on runners and/or triathletes. While your PA means well, they are not trained the same way a PT is to diagnose injuries. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the stretch info SSMinnow! The pain starts right around mile 2.5, I would kill to be able to run 10 miles without pain! The knee problems actually started at mile 23 of my first marathon, I followed a training plan pretty precisely so I am not sure if I ramped up too quickly but maybe I just have crappy form. I think I will check out a PT in my area (saw your recommendation tahrens!) just to have an expert eye give me some advice. As for the football banter, well I am a Texas fan, but no need to get into that here...I am also a realist ![]() |

New members chime in with your questions and opinions we can learn something from everyone here. Also it gives everyone a chance to show off their incredible knowledge base like Trevor not having a LBS near him I think I am starting to get a handle on the headaches and sundry issues going on with me. I have taken to stretching extra for the glut muscle . taking Vit B for the tiredness and I am using a very lite mixture of infinit when I work out. That combined with Claritin or Benedryl (antihistamines?) seems to be working pretty good. I had a really good run and work out on Saturday and have felt fine since. I am glad that John was outed as just being grinchy about that book! I felt bad for Kyla on that one. Personally, I'm really looking forward to making use of this group's incredible knowledgebase resources this season. Everyone seems incredibly helpful and friendly! Thanks for letting us join you this time around. ![]() Not to worry, John is just glad that he is not the "rookie" in the group this time around. It took him a long time to open up and feel comfortable too. ![]() |

Hope to get back to "normal" tomorrow and get back online a little more often. Not going to even try to catch up on what I've missed. Can anyone give me cliff notes of what's up? It is just what you expect - John drinking beer, Trevor is like the weird uncle from out of town, Chris is posting everything twice, Tracy is flirting with everyone, Doug and Tony are answering weird biking questions, all the rookies are shocked in to quietness (not really) - the only thing of note is that Suzy's got a stress fracture in her foot and is still not allowed to run. As a rookie, I will say that the group is intimidating - though not in a bad way. Everything moves quickly, so there's the fear of getting lost/left behind. Not to mention already feeling like you're a mile behind with all the inside jokes and pre-existing knowledge of each other's personalities and training/racing methods.
