Luckily I've got an 08 Giant entry level roadbike that I was just about to sell that I can ride in the meantime.  Sadly there isn't a typical derailleur hanger.  I was all a one-piece carbon construction at the rear end. 

Upon further inspection it looks like my chain caused the whole fiasco.  Apparently one of the links came undone and the outer part bent outwards and jammed the derailleur causing the break.  No matter what though, it doesn't seem like normal wear and tear to me, but a case for a warranty replacement.  I'll be on the phone with the bike shop I purchased it at first thing in the morning.

I have used a full piece for three seasons and during all 5 of my HIM I have never had to go (don't worry, I was hydrated) other than while swimming.

Would an argument for going two piece be the bathroom issue?.....I don't really plan on going on myself while running. I WILL stop and go.

I prefer one piece for fit and comfort. I've done up to HIM distance in them and plan to train so that I can go 112 with a one piece tri suit.

ETA - bathroom has not been an issue for me in the past with a one piece

My coaches tell us that it's been confirmed that the course is going back to the usual out-and-backs (I guess they finished work on the bridge that was closed last year).  We're going to be up Memorial Day weekend, and that's the course we'll be riding.

Also, I've mostly been a lurker on the site, so hello everyone.  Thanks for posting such interesting things!

Why don't we start off with a few questions...

1. Is this your first IM?
Nope, I have completed 3

2. Have you done LP before?
Yes, 2002, 2004, 2006 (DNF at mile 10 of run and ended up in medical tent), 2008 (PR)

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?
Have fun, enjoy the training and find some new training partners. Anyone close to Saratoga Springs, NY on this forum that would like to go on some rides? I've been at this too long to set time goals - too much can go wrong, not all of it in your control.

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race?
LP is 2hrs north of my home, therefore it is easy to get to and I can train on the course. BTW...this probably goes without saying but I highly, highly recommend riding the course prior to the race.

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc)
I how do I get my bike to go fast up the hills? ;-) And why when talking about the hills on the bike course, why does nobody ever mention the ski jump hill. I find that thing far worse than the 3 bears.

As for the westuit question, FULL because it's faster. 

And RUN FORM is very, uber-important.  Some coaches on this board claim it's not important, and that blows my mind.  Run 50 yards back and forth barefoot.  This is how you should run in shoes.  90%+ of all Runners should be running in NEUTRAL running shoes.  The human foot natually supinates and pronates.  This is natural and should not be controlled by an engineered foot cast (aka: 13oz+ trainer shoe).  If you are overweight, you are at greater risk of running injuries. 

The most important function of Form is the latter part of an Endurance Event.  If your Form suffers you can slow anywhere from :30 seconds to a minute plus per mile, while using the same amount of Energy.  This is critical for the last half of a Marathon!!  Especially an Ironman Marathon!!!  

Core Work will greatly help your Form.  Hill Repeats are Speedwork in disguise and will greatly help your Form.  Strides will also help your Form.  The more you focus on Form (running upright/ no slouching!; relaxed shoulders; minimal arm movement; equal matched movement on either side of the body -- don't have one hand doing a different motion than the other--, think compact/tight; no bopping up and down or wasted side-to-side motion: all movement should be mainly back and forth and involve you momentum being driven into the ground through your legs and thus propellingyou forward) and focusing on these essentials will have you running faster, longer and with less effort.

Sunrise: 5:35 AM
Sunset: 8:30 PM

Average High: 78°F
Average Low: 54°F (BRR!)
Mean: 66°F

Record High: 91°F (1952) - Let's hope 2011 isn't the year to break this.
Record Low: 36°F (1985) - Ditto...


I've heard the weather can vary big time even within a single day in Lake Placid. I am hoping for a sunny day with a cool light breeze - high of maybe 75 and low of 65!

If we can get weather even close to last years, we'll be enjoying the day. They had some winds and a little rain, but for an all day event up in the Adirondacks, that's pretty good.

Of all the coaches offering free advice on the net and of forums, etc...  I've found his to be the most accurate.  If I ever choose a coach, they are on the top of my list.  I pretty much already incorporate most of the Running Form Tips he provided, except I didn't know he suggests such an aggressive forward lean (at least compared to how I lean when I run).  I just incorporated this into my 10-mile run today, and I was :20 seconds per mile faster at a normal, aerobic pace.  The slight angle adjustment forward really worked and allowed my cadence to increase without any extra effort on my part.  Thanks again for posting Kaburns!

Upper Torso Position
This is the position of your body from your waist to your ear, relative to the vertical position. Ideally, I like to see the upper torso at a forward angle of about five to ten degrees off of vertical. Upper torso position is critical to improving running cadence and a foot strike that falls beneath the body. This improved foot strike position reduces braking forces and vertical bounce. A good upper torso position also permits the upper quad and psoas a bit of “slack”, allowing for good extension, as discussed above. While creating a good upper torso position is very much cognitive in nature, it also requires good soleus flexibility. Many triathletes lack this flexibility, leading to poor running mechanics, and many times, Achilles tendonitis and/or planter fasciitis. Extreme vertical bounce in a runner’s gait quite obviously leads to slower than necessary run times, as the balance of time moving vertically is NOT spent moving horizontally. This extreme vertical bounce can also overload the hips in, most cases upon contact with the ground. An additional one to two inches of vertical bounce, beyond normal, can relate to as much as 300 to 600 feet of vertical climbing in a flat 40-minute 10K, running at 90 steps per minute. This vertical bounce essentially creates hills where they are not!

Truth is.... we are due for a downpour.  More than likely it will RAIN all day long.  Mentally prepare for this and expect  it.  If it doesn't RAIN all day, be happy and thankfull and surprised!!!

Don't worry the weather will suck. Every Ironman I've done the weather has been odd

IMLP '08 3.5" of rain and all day it rained, high was maybe 68
IM Canada '09, 95 degrees and forest fires in area so lots of smoke, IMKY the same day that year was cooler
IMFL '10, swim was in the 30s to start, high of 62 IMFL is the most consistent weather of all NA Ironman races until the year I  did it

My run form has improved a lot working with QT2.  I'm attending the QT2 training camp in FL in April and Jesse will be doing video run analysis -- I'm really curious to see what he has to say about my run form.

I think I opened a can of worms with the weather! BUT, according to the long term forecast: "Summer temperatures will be near normal in New York and cooler than normal elsewhere, with below-normal rainfall. The hottest periods will be in late June and early and late July"

I like the part about below-normal rainfall! I also found the weather history for July 24th over the last 10 years for Lake Placid! Just by looking at that it looks like we're due for some rain and cool temperatures! I will start running and riding outside on every rainy day from now on to prepare  hehe

It's LP. We are due for pretty much anything...downpour, heat wave, cold temps, lots of wind, etc. In 2008, I was dryer while I was swimming than I was the rest of the day. Do not prepare for anything mentally! Control the items that you can control and play the cards that are dealt to you on game day. No matter what the weather is like, you are going to need to adapt, improvise and overcome throughout the day. Plan on it! Focus on the things that you can control like your training and your race strategy. Just my $0.02.

yep, weather will not effect anything I do between now and then so not thinking about it.  I'm thinking about how to cruise a nice easy swim and make 112 feel easy while moving along at a decent clip so I'm in a spot to run a decent marathon...that's basically all I'm thinking about.  Everything else=noise

I just want as little humidity as possible. Basically the conditions they had last year, especially in the afternoon were ideal racing conditions in my opinion. It was what, low 70's? sunny? little humidity? I call that PERFECT!

I did learn last year that I run WAY faster in the rain (no need to cool off), I melt in the heat, and biking in the rain sucks, but your get used to it.

But swimming in the rain is the worst!

Swimming in the rain was pretty cool last year!  Just remember though, its the adirondacks.  If you dont like the weather, just wait 5 minutes :-P  I really am at least wishing the same run weather for you guys that we had last year-it was just beautiful!
