I'm seriously considering doing the Oly Distance AG National Championships in August. I'm currently weighing the pros and cons of all this bike suffering you people speak of Wink hence my question the other day.

You need to stop talking about it and just do it.  You'll do great.  You're already getting some good rides in there.  After Boston you'll be able to focus more on the bike.  Use cycling as your cross training as you already are, then hammer the bike after Boston.  Oh yeah, swim a little too......

damn you! Ok! I'll do it!

Totally what I was thinking though. Take time off from running right after Boston and start base building cycling and swimming. Also, I want to get some pointers on my swim technique and bike adjustments from someone who knows what they are doing (cough cough Mark)  for my lil' pawn shop roadie.

mndymond - 2013-01-07 4:00 PM Tired today. Just eating dinner and then going to bed. Only two hours of sleep last night because I waited (along with some other people) for 2 hrs to get our oversized luggage to be told "whoops...we actually left it all in Maui"...so ya... No bike prob until Thursday or Friday by the time they get it to my house.

ugh, that bites about the bike.

axteraa - 2013-01-07 9:17 AM Awesome Yanti, if that doesn't work for you i can't imagine what would!  I can't wait to hear how the trial swims in the mountain lakes go.

Yeah, I think your a lost cause if that crap doesn't work.  I actually think you are on the right track on staying out of the water as long as possible.  Seems to me with your issues less time in the water the better and just get your body warmed up as much as possible on land.  You did not mention chemical warms on the bike though, I'd get some for there as well.

Yanti, you mentioned hot liquid prior to swim but might be a good idea to have a thermos of something hot in T1. Also, perhaps a thermal bottle of warm liquid on the bike to start.

In the words of a great philosopher in "Angels"

  • To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering
  • Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls, The most massive characters are seared with scars
  • Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened
  • A man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears

Runners can make for rather good cyclists fairly quickly.

Isn't that the truth...my laundry basket when compared to the rest of the family (including 12 and 10 year old girls!) was twice the size of anyone else's...couple that with same two girls swimming 5 times a week and I'll be lucky if the washer makes it through the winter.

We're having a bit of a warm front - at 9pm last night, it was 7 degrees F, this morning, it's 32...an outside run it is today!

Sorry about your bike Mindy.

ART link I mentioned previously...this is such a fantastic website with all sorts of great information for self-massage, trigger point therapy and ART...if you are suffering from any pain due to training - I can't recommend this enough. In searching for the link for you all, I reminded myself I should be doing some of the foot exercises for that pesky foot issue I've got.

Morning gang...been out of the loop for a few days bec my folks are still here (until Thurs), school & work started for the boys and I yesterday...need to get back in a routine after the holidays. We made it to track practice last night (my husband and boys come too), managed to run sub 3 mins on most of my 800's which was a nice surprise, and I am not too sore today.

OK, so I do have a question for you guys...I am thinking about doing the Leadman Tri here in early April. They have a sprint, Oly then the Leadman 125 distances. The 125 is a 2.5km swim/112km bike/11km trail run. I'm leaning towards the 125 because it is so bike heavy and I don't run so much anymore. I am just not sure how to train for it? I am self coached (if you could call it that LOL), the bike and swim are a bit more than HIM distance and the run is short, so I am not sure what kind of plan to use? Any suggestions?

How about an HIM plan that's strong on swimming to work with? Then a bit more biking and less running than what's there. In particular on the run, keep the frequency up, but don't go as far for the longer runs. More biking could be from a bit longer sessions or an additional session, however it fits in best.

I finally made it to Vancouver last night.  I managed to get on a standby flight about 3 hours earlier than what was scheduled and it was the same one my wife was on.  I was literally the last person on - standing at the entrance to the plane until the last second while they made sure no one showed up last second.  There were 4 of us standing there, only two got on and my buddy gave me his seat because my wife was on the plane already.  I think I owe him a few drinks!  Of course my luggage won't get here until this morning.

Yes, have someone poke you in the soleus. Laughing

Genuinely curious--who did the diagnosis, and do you have any pain/tightness behind the knee or down the Achilles as well?

The initial diagnosis was made by Dr Google aided by my wife.  After that, I was in to see my Osteopath and she also said shin splints (without me mentioning it).  She worked on my leg for about 45 mins and said it seemed to be the Soleus.  Initially she suspected Tib anterior as well but after working on it, it seemed fine.

Absolutely no pain or tightness behind the knee or in the Achilles area - it's very localized to a small area along the inside of the leg and doesn't hurt at all when I run - I'm just aware of it.  It is occasionally tender to touch in that area afterwards.

I had shin splints early on and was advised by a very good runner to try to increase my cadence.   Worked on that and they have not (knock wood) returned

Funny you should mention that.  Waaaaay back when I started all this tri madness and started running, that was exactly what my problem was.  I got sore shins every single time I ran.  At the time I read something about forefoot running and I tried it and it solved the problem instantly.  Now, this isn't an anti-heel strike comment, I thought I was trying to not heel strike but what I really ended up doing was shortening my stride and increasing my cadence.  Basically just not over striding.  That was a different shin pain than what I have now though.

Well, I made it to the pool this morning. I had to do some fast talking with myself. How many days does it take to make this a habit? My performance was less than mediocre, but I expected that because of how long I've been out. The pool has been closed for nearly a month, and I wasn't religious about going in November when it was open.

The good news is that I worked pretty hard (for me) for 50 minutes. I will have at most an hour available to me in this time slot because I need to get back to the house and get kiddos up and ready for school.

Now to get out the door before 6:00 a.m. so that I can be in the water by 6:00 and take full advantage of my time.

I think Ben's approach would work.  Another option may be to cobble together a plan from different formats.  For the swim, take from an HIM since it's not too fare off, for the bike (since it's your strength) take from an IM, although you can knock down some of the long rides, and for the run, take from an Olympic - and then add just a little bit.

Planning to give the legs and mind another day of rest today and do some active recovery in the pool.  Mondays are a planned rest day but after a late hockey game Sunday (and post game brew) and early wakeup to travel for work yesterday I am not ready to work.

Sally:  I think what Ben mentioned is a good plan.  Your bike is already pretty strong so increasing your swim volume would be a good idea.  I would likely add some more 'faster' running than if I was preparing for a HIM run since it is only 11K.

I joined a 530 am Masters swim team and showed up more asleep than mentally awake for maybe a couple months. It was a brand new pool.... so we all started at the same time...we noticed that after a couple months we were waking up before the alarm went off. i had a slight advantage to that adaptation however,  for the preceding year i had to get up at four A.M., two days a week to be at work. If it had not been for that prior "getting up ridiculuosly early" experience i'm not sure i would have stuck with that swim team. I no longer have that job...so i can swim early five days a week if i want. In addition , im a keyholder for the pool and im the opener on fridays...so i had a lot of incentive to stick with the program. Our little core team of eight or so people have seen a lot of newbies come and go in the past two years since we started. It not getting up early thats difficult...its getting to sleep early enough and training your friends to forget calling you after they eat dinner at eight pm. lol

if you join a team , the swim is a cinch....and i was uncomfortable in the water when i joined the team. Good Luck!
