I am 51, about 6'4", was 247lb rt now Howdy Coach ... and welcome to the group. I can absolutely relate to you on the run, bike, swim. I'm 57 yrs old, 6'-0" and ~250 lbs. Same for me, in that the bike is my favorite of the 3 sports, followed by swim and run. I pass everyone on the downhill, only to have the reverse happen going back up My first race was 4 years ago, and I've been doing this ever since. I've found that regardless of planning for a race or not, I simply enjoy the training. Again, welcome to the group ... look forward to your comments and experiences down the road. |

Extreme Veteran 541 Virginny | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Shoes/pedals - Everyone has their favorites. I'm sure others will chime in. Here are the two I'm familiar with. SPD pedals are probably the most common and I have them on my mountain bike. They are also on the stationary bikes used in spin classes. It is possible to adjust how tight the shoe fits to the pedal, so you can start with them loose and tighten as you get used to pedaling while attached. There are various styles. Some road ones you can only clip into one side, and for some reason these turn down when there's no shoe in them, so people have to flip them with their toe before clipping in. Some find this challenging. Speedplay pedals are what I have on my road bike. Fell into these by accident but I love them. They are circular pedals and you can clip in either side. A big advantage to these are they give you some rotational motion in your foot (called "float"). i.e., you can move your heel right or left a little without unclipping. This can be good for the knees. They are also really easy to get out of, and the only time I fell for not unclipping fast enough was when the bike was in sand and didn't move when I expected it to. Drawback: not good for sandy or muddy walking - if you get sand or mud in your cleat, you won't be able to clip in to your bike. I have occasionally worried about this during races, where there's a part you run your bike to the mount line through dirt. But I've never had a problem during a race. I have gotten dirt in them inadvertently other times. Most cleats can attach to most shoes. Get what's comfortable for you. The bottom of the shoe should be rigid for best power on the bike. Velcro is good for fast transitions. Many have some venting for hot weather. -Rebecca Edited by miche033 2014-03-25 1:12 PM |

Member 1293 Pearland,Tx | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN @Rebecca SPD- I have used them the longest i still have 1 pair. will probably stick with them forever. Speedplay- I heard is good no complaints. Look Keo- i am using them now by default because of training. I would say whatever is more comfortable with you go with it. You could try to switch pedals from your roadie to find out. See how it goes!!! Cheers!!! |

Extreme Veteran 701 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Pedals ... I have both the SPD style and Look Keo style. For me either works with a road bike for group, training or casual rides. I don't like how 'slick' the metal to metal surfaces feel when trying to clip in with the SPD style. Especially in a race, when you're trying to be fast and clip in. So, I prefer the Look Keo style for my road bike. Too, the Look style pedals help keep your legs and feet aligned for a more aero posture with the ride. On my mountain bike, I have eggbeaters and love these. Similar to SPD's, no matter how much mud, dirt, grime etc you run through - these clip in every time and the eggbeater design helps keep junk from building up. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Hi Coach, You remind me how gross pool water tastes and how good/clean our Okanagan Lake water tastes when we swim in the summer. The night before my 1st sprint I was absolutely certain I would drown which was silly because I was swimming 2K three times a week for practice and I only had to swim 750m for the sprint. In the sprint I hyperventilated and took 21+ minutes to do the swim (& the next day I swam 2k again no problem). Point is it is all a headgame. I just needed to relax and enjoy it. Don't worry too much about OWS. You just need to get out and try it as often as you can. It amazes me how easy it is to swim 2K in our lake but a new lake is always intimidating so I try to get out & swim it a couple times before a race to get comfortable. I'm 5'8"/179lbs (started at 225 awhile back) and I was really afraid of climbing hills and just as bad - going down the back sides of the hills. You'll be amazed at how flat the hills become as you ride them so just attack them and they'll get easier. I actually single out the worst of them and ride them 3 or 4 times up & down to get better at riding them. The hardest thing for me in all my events has been getting off the bike and then running. Don't worry about being last - it's no big deal. And, you won't be last anyway. (go to your race website and see if you can look at past year's results out of curiosity). Even looking at the links that Rebecca posted I'm not sure. I just said to the LBS fellow, "I don't want to walk on my heels." and he set me up with pedals and I can walk very nearly normal in my shoes. I really liked the looks of the speedplay pedals though. Maybe I'll try them when I wear out the ones I have. Reading what you say about your local weather and hearing about the spring storms and cold in the rest of Canada, I have to say we've had a phenomenal winter here. All winter we've been amazed at the storms everywhere but here. Some cool weather and a small amount of snow was all we had. We haven't had any snow on the ground for several months and even when we did it only lasted a few days and then was gone. Today I was outside running and I was too hot (16C/61F). I'll have to drop a shirt (I wear two or three in the cooler temps and just wear my running shorts from now on. On the negative side we won't likely get into our lakes until mid-May at best and if the spring is cool maybe not until June. |

I just told the LBS it's my first time with clipless (I still think that's a silly name when they clip in!) and they set me up with some lightly sprung pedals that I can get out of quickly when I'm falling over. They have saved me on a number of occaisons.

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Good morning! I am excited to report I am back into my routine! I went to a cycling class yesterday and hit the pool this morning. I was nervous for the swim since I hadn't gone in a couple weeks, but swam a half mile easily with no breaks! I had been doing intervals, but they were putting water in the pool today so I kept going from nice warm water to freezing cold patches and wanted to get out faster. Considering my tri (which is a sprint) isn't until June, I'm feeling very confident. Thank you everyone for the pedal feedback, that was very helpful! George, I am jealous of your weather! I think we are through the worst of it though. I put my shovel and salt away last night, so hopefully that doesn't jinx it Have a wonderful Thursday everyone! |

New user 75 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN I am fairly new to Tri, but I have been on bike for about 6 years now. I picked my Road style clipless because that is the best shoe I could find to fit my narrow foot. All clipless a fairly the same as far as functionality. I am really used to mine now, and click my heels out to release without thinking. Here is good article on difference. http://bicyclehabitat.com/buyers-guides/all-about-clipless-pedals-p... I don't know how you all handle running or biking in that cold of temperatures, makes my bones ache and doesn't feel good on lungs either Kudos to you!!!! My swim did not go as well as it would like this morning, I was hoping to do all my drill work then bust a continuous 400m after. Didn't happen 100m into 400 I was exhausted and completely out of breath! *%#^&$@$% I was little surprised at this, but upon further reflection and talking to my coach, I did a new best on running yesterday at 4 miles, with new best on first mile time at 9:30. Really happy with it but no doubt took a lot out of me. I weighed this morning and I have drop 4lbs in last 3 days. So I am sure that is sapped me a little too. So trying to stay confidant and believe with me tapering down next week, I will have gas in tank as needed for next Saturday Tri. As I knew when I signed up this Tri is pushing time table on me, it was and is a stretch for my training, but the good part is I have worked much harder than I would have with first one being another month or two out. We will see. LOL By the way I did get little pissed off and determined and finished my 400m with few quick breaths on turns, didn't focus on technique that I have learned just trying to relax and use less energy, it seemed to help, focusing on technique can be exhausting in itself seems like. Question: Is it unusual for your lungs and chest to filled tired? PS....I really like this group, I look forward each day sharing what all is going on with our training, issues and successes. Thanks and keep moving forward Coach Edited by coachrains 2014-03-27 8:43 AM |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Coach, you will get there!! I have the advantage of having competitive swimming in my background, so what's more important for you is seeing your growth! Being that you had a personal best run the day before, that would definitely take a lot out of you. Come race day you will do great, and can use your results and set your goals from there, knowing you will have more training for your next race. Keep up the good work! |

My training spots don't look anything like that...!!! Some beach views, some heavily wooded hills, but a lot or residential roads to get there and back. |

Master 2484 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Pedals - when I started training for triathlons, I used SPD pedals. I did that because my mountain bike had SPD pedals on it and I decided to use my mountain bike shoes for triathlon to save a little money. After a couple of years I got a professional fit and the fitter recommended Look Keo pedals and that is what I've been using since. The SPD pedals are a bit easier to get into but with practice I'm sure all types work. |

Master 2484 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Coach - cool pics! I like Kentucky and will be bringing my son to UK for a college visit in a few weeks. Regarding lungs and chest feeling tired. It's definitely possible since you are likely taking deeper breathes swimming than you have ever. That said, I'm not a doctor so it wouldn't hurt to get checked out. That reminds me of a funny story. A few weeks before my first 70.3 I had my regular physical and the doctor noticed a change in my EKG and ordered an echo cardio gram which got scheduled for the following week. When I got home my wife asked what the doc said about doing my race. I said the doc didn't ask if I had any races coming up so I didn't tell him. Needless to say, my wife wasn't too happy. Everything turned out fine. Doing all the cardio caused my heart to grow and I developed a condition called athletes heart. |

We are lucky to have the nice rolling hills throughout the horse farms in Central Kentucky. Great place to ride! Ransick - I think I am still just not in the condition I need to be in, and swimming really saps me, the four miler I did day before pushed my lungs too. I had full physical not too long ago before I was exercising and Doc said heart sounded perfect. But I am keeping watch, at my age you can't be too careful. This morning swim went pretty good EXCEPT Maybe you all have been there too. I had terrible swim yesterday, as I mentioned above, so back in pool I go to swim my 400m nonstop. Did little warm up and off I went, going into the 125 mark I thought "this is CRAZY, I can't do this, why am I doing Triathlons anyway, I need to cancel next weeks trip to Atlanta and take wife to Nashville and drink beer and listen to country music!" "I am at 125 and feel like I am dieing!" "I am done!!!" Caught my breath at the end, thought to myself, "well - I already paid for it, and told everyone I was doing it, lets keep going" LOL Swam my 400 in about 12:15, slow but sure, did stop at end of 100's to catch two or three gulps of breath. After I finish swam another 3X100 with quick breaths at ends. Moral is better now, swimming is such a demoralizer for those of us who have not done it most of their life or competitively. 8 days till TRI Edited by coachrains 2014-03-28 8:02 AM |

A couple years later I started again, almost quit, but kept going. 3x per week for 6 months before I could swim more than a couple hundred yards without being gassed. Using a pull buoy helped me. I'd swim til gassed, put a pull buoy between my knees and swim until I recovered, then removed it til I was gassed, and just keep going. It helps you get longer sets and feel what it is like to swim level. |

8 Central Massachusetts, | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Welcome Coach! I'm just starting triathlons again and swimming is by far my worst discipline. I've found (kind of like running for distance) to take it slow and try and conserve energy. At first I'd always go out too hard in my swims and runs and get gassed. By ramping back my speed, I've found I've been able to get some better distance in. I started running under 30 minutes and barely getting 10 mins straight swimming and over the past month and a half, I'm up to over 50 minutes running and just passed 30 minutes in the pool without stopping! Slow and steady! |
