Got in another Zwift race today.  I had to upgrade my computer system from a very mediocre laptop to a basic gaming rig to make Zwift work right.  Worked great and graphics are SO much better.  And Zwift doesn't freeze up and kick me out during a race, so that's helpful.

Race was a 20k road race:  10k pancake flat, 8k two climbs and descents, then a 2k flat finish.  I went out a little quicker than I wanted as I was trying to hold with the lead C group but got dropped about 2k before the climbs (I was averaging 280 watts at the time - not sustainable).  Had a big gap behind me so dialed it back before attacking the climbs.  Cracked a little on the 2nd (longer) climb, but had a great last 5k of the race as three of us working together held off a charging group of about 10 riders by 2 seconds.  I got out sprinted as I was toast by then and came in 23rd out of 39 in C group.  Got all-time record power numbers from about 7 through 32 minutes.

It's 55 degrees with 30 mph winds here today and weather is looking kinda meh through the weekend, so probably mostly Zwifting for me except maybe Saturday.

I'll be channeling my inner Gretchen on Friday with a pretty large honey-do list around the house, through with significantly less tonnage of stuff moved I'm sure.

Damn Mike - you make even a trainer ride sound exciting. Congrats on the great power numbers! You make me wish I had bought a smart trainer.

Still using a dumb Kurt Kinetic Road Machine with an old school Powertap hub.  I know smart trainers are really coming down in price but I like using the same equipment indoors and out.

Zwift racing is a blast, even though there is a lot of cheating with under-reporting your weight or sandbagging in the wrong category.  I'm not sure why people get a jolt out of doing well in a race where they cheated or were overqualified but whatever.

WHat does it take to have a zwift account. What type of equipment do you need? Thanks!

To use Zwift you need a bike, a trainer with either some kind of power meter (either on the trainer or on the bike) or a known power curve and a speed sensor (most of the fluid trainers are just fine for this and you can get them for under $300).  You'll also need some sort of computer and a screen, so a tablet, PC/monitor, or Apple TV,  plus an ANT+ sensor for the PC if you go that route. If you use a speed sensor, Zwift will utilize that know power curve to estimate your power output (TrainerRoad also does this...it's not all that accurate for me and doesn't simulate actual road riding, but for training purposes it's just fine and I did it for 5+ years).

I've kept upgrading the different components over the years so now I have:

  • road bike with Powertap wheel/hub on Kurt Kinetic Road Machine > this gives the power output that Zwift needs to know how fast you should be going
  • Wahoo HR strap (I think between my wife, daughter, and I we have like a dozen HR monitors of different types - chest strap, arm band, watch, etc. - so choose what you want here)
  • iPower PC with Intel i3 processor, 8 GM RAM 120 GB SSD hard drive, and GeForce nVidia 710 graphics card (this rig was $500 at Best Buy)
  • 40" Samsung TV

All of that is overkill to start for sure, especially the gaming rig and 40" monitor but I like the immersive feel it gives you in the worlds.

Speaking of worlds, Zwift has six:  Watopia (a mythical island which looks like Hawaii with all kinds of terrain and weather), London, Yorkshire, Richmond, NYC, and Innsbruck.  All of them expand with new features and routes.  The Yorkshire, Richmond, and Innsbruck sites are all fairly small with a limited number of routes, and NYC is just tooling around Central Park but they also created this elevated platform route that weaves above some of the city and the park - it's hilarious .

Zwift accounts are $15/month I think, and they give a two-week trial or something like that.  There is a HUGE user community for the product on Facebook, plus there are forums like ours here that Zwift runs.  I've seen as many as 20,000 people on Zwift at the same time, so every avatar you see is a real person somewhere in the world riding a setup like yours.

Just Google "Zwift new user" or something like that and there are tutorials, you tube videos, etc.

Went back and forth yesterday about riding indoors vs. outdoors because it was pretty wet out from all the rain we had Friday and Friday night.  Finally decided to brave it and had a great ride for about 25 miles, chasing a couple of Strava segment KOMs including the 1+' (just under a half mile) segment right out front of my house - failed on that one even though I set some all-time power records in the 1:10 - 1:30 range.  Today's going to be an easy recovery ride and some strength work before watching golf.

Happy Sunday!

Originally posted by aviatrix802 Great job on the bike and core workouts, Dave! Balloons are great for the core, my PT always had at least one exercise I had to use them in. Haha In Birmingham, AL, just finished two weeks on and I’ll head out tonight to commute home - after two flights overnight tonight and a 2.5 hour drive I’ll be back home for a week starting tomorrow. Yay! I hope to get my bike outside this weekend and next week.

Bet you'll be glad to be back home with all this stuff going on.  And good luck with getting some good weather - until the past few days we've been working on our 4th straight month of March.  We had the warmest February on record and we're working on the 2nd coldest May.

After helping my girlfriend fix her front porch (she had some rotten boards - and scoring some browning points before deserting her for an hour and a half seemed like a wise idea), I headed out on my weekly long ride. The ride was good but slow. I had to stop about 15 minutes in and buy a mask at the local CVS because I was riding on the rail trail and the place was packed with people (plus it's a state law up here that we have to have one on even if we are running or riding). I ended up going 16.7 which was my longest ride of the season. So, I'm stoked about that - I just wish I was a little bit faster. Part of my problem is that I can't shift from my big ring to my small ring because my front derailer needs to be adjusted (I need to take it into the local bike shop) so I'm only riding in the small ring. One of these days when we have a week of crappy weather I'll take it in and fix it.

Until then - I'm stoked about the 16.7.

In other good news, I lost another 2 pounds today, which adds up to 6 straight week of losing weight. I'm gonna celebrate with some shofferhoffer - my favorite shandy.

Onward people!

Mike - Thanks for all the advice on Zwift. Way to get out the door and enjoy a great 25 mile bike ride! You've earned some golf!

Goals for the week

1. Really try to get the most out of my core workouts by giving 100 percent
2. Ride 2 days and then walk 1 day. Repeat.
3. Lose 1.6 pounds so I can sneak under 250 for the first time in three years.

Happy Memorial Day Everyone

I've got 19 weeks until my century - but I can't find a plan that works for me. There are tons of "century" training plans out there but nothing that meets my needs. I've tried BT and Training Peaks and while they have plans - they don't have anything close to a 20 week century plan to get me up that mountain. ANyone have any suggestions on where I can go to find one? I might have to hire someone to create a plan for me.

Thoughts?

Don't faint! I'm back. Had a week of doing nothing last week: hormones etc messing my motivation up big time. Managed a short ride yesterday (errands) and a longer one today (more errands) and then did arm w/o and core after; first time in a while, but it feels good.

@dave - maybe see if the bike part of an ironman training plan would work?

I got in my bike yesterday and it was brutal. Coming off my long ride on Sunday, my legs felt like mush on memorial day. BUt I got it in. I skipped on the abs workout because my back hurt so much but I will get back to it today.

WOke up this morning and my scale was going in the wrong direction. I didn't have too big of a cheat day so I'm not really sure what's up - but I will make sure I eat well today because I want nothing more than to hit 250 this weekend.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Maybe a bit dehydrated from the workouts? That can impact on lack of weight loss.

Managed my second day of ride and arms/core. Feels good. Hope everyone else doing ok?

Last week was a show—literally one of the worst. Our house is old and needs a lot of work and repair and replacement of things. We knew that going into buying it and we were fine with the typical old house things that needed updated. I’m the process of doing some fixing up on squeaky floors, I found that the previous owner cut the main trunk beam along the center of the house and replaced it with a 2x6 (laid flat) to add a air duct. Needless to say, this was not a great find. Now I have a foundation specialist coming in to tie the two sides together with a steel beam, but In order for them to do that, they need 3’ cut back from both sides of the center beam dig down to 16” below the beam along the entire length of the house. That is A LOT of dirt to move. I spent wed and Thursday digging all day—more than 11 hours each day. Friday to Monday I spent laying patio pavers (which are now almost done—just need to put in the trim bricks, which are custom cut.).

Notice what is missing? Training.

Nothing last week except Tuesday. Back on the horse this morning with an hour trainer ride. Should have also had a run, but yesterday, while walking into a store, I felt a stabbing pain in my fight calf. Cramp or strain, I can’t really tell? Didn’t really stretch out. Painful enough to make me limp all afternoon. I wore a compression sleeve all day yesterday and all morning so far. It didn’t hurt at all on the bike, so I’m leaning toward cramp. I wouldn’t be surprised. We’ve been eating takeout and I’ve been sweating buckets for days, so electrolytes could be way out of whack.

Beer—I had two Edmund Fitzgerald porters last night to celebrate finishing laying the full pavers. I was hung over all morning. First beer in 140 days.

DQ, way to go on the weight loss and the consistency!

Gretchen, BUMMER! At least you're getting some strength training in with all that housework. And you can do it yourself without having to pay someone (I want to redo my basement but am being told it's going to cost my entire savings to do what I want...trying to figure out what I can do to save some money, at least doing a lot of the demo by myself maybe?).

Mike, crushing that bike! Nice work.

Jenn, yay for going home! I can't even imagine being on the road as much as you. I'm sure it's such a relief when you get some QT with the fam.

Sappho, welcome back! I totally get it, I was right there with you this past weekend. Hormones can just really mess with your mood so much.

Didn't do a ton this weekend. Part was hormones/feeling depressed (although the weather was SO NICE). Part was that I am seeing a guy and was avoiding him b/c I need to end things and feel blah. Either way, I took it easy. Went on a short run this morning but my shoulders were bothering me (again...so strange), so I didn't make it as far as I wanted. Had to prepare for a meeting this morning so did about 5 minutes of yoga before giving up and just getting ready. I'm feeling very stressed and unmotivated and blah these days. I've PR'd in my max weight again, so that didn't help. I think I need to add a 30 minute walk in before and after work every day so it feels more like my normal commute and gets me moving more.

Did a workout from my trainer this morning (I also did one Friday and Saturday, so I guess I did something this weekend). Feeling less blah today. Ended things with the guy I was seeing so think I feel some relief from that.

Bummer things didn't work out with the guy but there will be others. On a good note - glad you got in a good workout and that you feel a little "less blah"!

@ Nicole, less blah is better than blah for sure, and less stressed. Give yourself a little grace with everything going on. The weather is getting warmer and more workouts can be done outside now - that’s a huge upside.

@ Gretchen, wow on the beam! Great job on finishing the pavers! You don’t need training with the projects you’re doing - you’re doing it the way Rocky would!

@ Sappho, well done on the rides, I’m glad you’re not having pain!

Since being home I’ve done zero! My first thing is cat chi omg up on sleep. By the time I wake up it’s implied I spend all time with family.
We did celebrate a belated birthday dinner and cake for my now 15 year old son and another night I opened my presents.
Yesterday I went to the garden nursery and picked up flowers. I got a few in last night but it’s going to be 93 here today so am hesitant to plant in that heat. (Don’t want the flowers to die).
My present from my hubby is being delivered today - a Peloton. I am unsure about it (but displayed much excitement) as I have a Kick’r I love and can use my own bike with. I do like having a Peloton or any spin bike on the road and he read that as excitement in possibly wanting one. I’m hoping he and the boys show some interest in it too and use it. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Jenn—your description of your husband getting you a Pelaton because you like them on the road is reminding me of my dad. If you mention you like something once, for whatever reason, he will remember and eventually you’ll get one, even if it makes no sense (see ping pong table of 2011 that FILLED my living room).

Nicole—sorry to hear about the guy.

Dave—way to go on the consistency man!

Got in an hour on the trainer this morning—tempo ride. No pain in my calf during the actual ride, but I (stupidly) tried to get off the bike that direction and nearly fell when my calf started to cramp/give way. It is still a little sore walking, but sooo much better than Monday afternoon.

YAY - new gear.  Don't join the cult.

We actually ordered an Echelon, because we're contrary (and it's like a grand cheaper).  My wife will use it mostly but I'll use it to change up a bit with a different bike position and it comes with all the non-bike group class workouts, which my wife loves.

Another Zwift race today, a 24km criterium.  Finished 10th/18 in C group, really small field today so tough to judge how well I did but my race tactics were good, didn't crack, and held good power numbers throughout so I'm calling it a success.

I imagine I can build my own house now. I know the carpentry, plumbing, electricity, duct layout, drywall, and finish work. The question is...would I want to?!?!?! At this point, yes--burn this place to the ground and lets start again!! (with no one and no bikes getting hurt, of course!)
