Expert 764 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Hi, everyone! I'm back from an extended time away and I'm ready to race! I spent a month in Alabama for work, then we had a month-long inspection when I got back to my home base. During the inspection I got sick for a week, got better, then got sick all over again last week. Now I have to balance training with getting extra sleep and resting my body so I can get better for good! Only 2 more long rides/runs left until the taper starts! |

I'll be in transition (body marking/bike handling/gear bags) nothing specific yet, but at least I know the area. Hope everyone's training is going well. I got an email yesterday as well....I'm an arch timer (what's that?) instead of a finish line catcher at the Finish Line. I'm going to be asked to move to catcher..really a lot of fun talking with the athletes. I've yet to hear anything about assignments. Check again this evening but nothing as of this morning. Worst case...I find out at Friday night meeting...I'll even just pick my stuff up and float from point to point as needed... |

QUOTE] I read this too, and was really confused because right before that, it says "you will have access to your bicycle beginning at 5:00 a.m. on race morning (below in red). It also talks about getting to you bike to pump up the tires on race morning in the Athlete Guide. Guess we'll see.... "You will have access to your bicycle beginning at 5:00 a.m. on race morning, but you will not be allowed to remove your bike from the transition area until the start of the bike portion of the race. You will not have access to your bike and run gear bags on race morning until after the swim, so please plan accordingly."Edited by trigator2151 2009-09-30 10:57 AM |

Veteran 160 Salt Lake City, UT | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread RedRaiderTri - 2009-09-28 10:19 AM Haven't posted much on here, just been following along and taking in all the advice being given. This will be my first Ironman also and I was looking over the Athletes guide and had a question for anyone who has done this before. I was planning on using a fuel belt for the run for my drink mix, but reading the guide it states; "You will not have access to your bike and run gear bags on race morning until after the swim, so please plan accordingly." If you can not get to your run gear bag in the morning does anyone have a suggestion on how to use a fuel belt? Thanks. Good Luck to all and be safe training. I just sent a note via the Contact Us at IromanFlorida.com, and asked for clarification on getting to the bags on race morning, and the answer was "no" access on race morning (word for word below in red)... "You will not have access to your bike and run gear bags on race morning until after the swim." |

I am glad to see someone else getting to where I am. I love to ride and train but I am just ready for this to be here and stop worrying about building. After my HIM race this past weekend, I am anxious for IMFL to get here. Just keep telling myself that it's just 11 more heavy training days and then my taper begins!! Train hard and stay safe everyone!! |

Veteran 215 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I hear ya! I have a 7 hr ride this weekend and an 8 hr ride next weekend and SO not looking forward to it. I have 3, 7 hr rides in already. Is this really necessary??? Its mind numbing. NOt to mention by boyfriend is at wits end with me. Instead of a slow 7 hr ride, how about a 5 hr ride with tempo effects or intervals or something?? I am not a big fan of my plan right now. Next year for LP there will be changes!! lesley |

Next year for LP there will be changes!! lesley Do you have a coach or are you using an internet/book plan? 8 hr. ride seems kinda excessive but I have NO experience other than reading a few books...I thought main goals of the long ride are to 1. figure out nutrition/hydration 2. get your butt used to sitting on that little saddle for long periods of time. My max ride is 6 hrs. and that's the week before taper. If you're riding that much before the race, come race day, it'll feel like a "short" ride for ya... |

Next year for LP there will be changes!! lesley I agree 7-8 hrs seems too much, I use the Matt Fitzgerald plan and my longest ride is 6hr 15 min. How may miles are you getting in those rides? How long do you plan to do the Ironman ride in? I don't plan to be out there over 6 hrs, so I don't feel there is a need to be on the bike every week or every other week longer than that. If you plan to be on the bike that long then it may not be a bad idea to get your body use to being in that position for that amount of time. Good luck if you can handle being on the bike 8 hrs you will have no problem with 6 to 6 1/2 hours. |

Expert 830 Chesapeake, VA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I haven't ridden more then 6 ever! My longest this Ironman has been just over 5. I have to agree that 8 is quite high. The longest ride my training book I used for the first Ironman was 6.5 hours. |

Veteran 215 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Sadly enough, it most likely will take me around 6:45-7 hrs to do the bike in Florida so I guess that is why my coach is having me do such long rides. I get 105-110 in 7 hrs in this terrain in central Pa. I did Chesapeakeman aqua-velo bike portion in 6:50 which is very comparable to Florida. I guess the good news is that I will be prepared. |

Veteran 215 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I thought it was horrible!! I did eagleman swim in 40 mins so I was expecting 1:20 give or take and my swim ended up 1:41. I am not a very strong swimmer. My swimmer friends equated it to an ocean swim. That turn back home was quite choppy. I was just hanging on for dear life Good practice for florida though. I hope in florida there are gels available after the first lap cuz being in the water that long I think affected my first 20 miles of the bike. |

I took 9 mins in T1 just to get some nutrition and my 'land legs' back under me! But I know it gave me a lot of confidence for FL! I did the swim from Alcatraz this summer and the return leg at ChesapeakeMan was as tough as anything that I encountered on that swim (except for the cold!) |

Member 42 Mobile | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I thot my training plan was brutal because it didn't give a day off. I just wear out and take one. But...7-8 hour ride sounds rough. My longest ride is 6 also. On 11-7-09, your behind is gonna feel like its been given a gift!! I have 3 more wkends of long rides. This wkend is 100 miler over in Ocean Springs, MS called the Southern Magolia 100. The next 2 wkends are a little less. Then....Taper!! I've never thot that was a bee-yooo-tiful word, but it sure is. |

Member 42 Mobile | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread In answer to your question about gels at the 1/2 way point. I was a volunteer for the swim last year and they did not have gels. They give out water and gatorade. Most people shove a gel up the sleeve of their wetsuit, if they think they are gonna need one at the 1/2 way point. I plan on doing that myself. |

I'm with you, my longest ride calls for 6:30 in the saddle but there is no way I'm fiishing the bike in under 7 hrs. as for the swim the waves will completely slow me down as well, my HIM 2 weeks ago was in 43:00 so I am "hopeful" for a 1:35-:40 in FL. We'll see...Glad to know everyone else feels as burned out as I do - for the first time since taking up tri's in 2006 I didn't want to workout this week, I'm really struggling with staying on track -just whooped. Hope the mojo comes back soon! |
