Are you asking about WHEN to shift while you are riding at the appropriate time? It's based off of "feel" or how easy/hard it is to pedal. If you base it off cadence, then you should be around 80 to 100 revolutions per minute (for one foot to make a complete circle when pedaling). You want to be as comfortable as possible, not winded (except for hills, which is given). If the pedaling is TOO easy, then shift up one or two. If pedaling is making your legs hurt or it's hard to pedal, then shift down. If you have a tri bike, stay in aero as much as you can to reserve your energy. Standing up and pedaling up a hill should only be done if you are racing and want that power, or have to get up a hill faster, but, you burn more energy. I hope this helps. it does help Phil. thanks. i can do what you describe on my hybrid no problem. OK. sissy that i am. it has numbers on the components, so i can see 'where' im at, shiftingwise. but this bike, im 'lost' i keep whining, i want my numbers back. waaaaaaah. ill get it, im sure. the more im on the bike, the better handle ill have. it just seems like im working harder on the hills (this is a full carbon bike mind you) and that im running out of gears before i get to the top of the hills, 'quicker' than on my hybrid. though it cant be possible, cuz i have more gears on this bike than i had on my hybrid... patience and persistence. stacieb the more you ride and start switching the gears the more you will learn to love to bike...dont try to power up hills in your big ring that you should be riding in while in the flats...as you approach a hill start to shift to lower gears as you feel it get tougher and continue to do shift lower and lower as you continue to climb the hill...try to keep the same cadence you had when you were riding in the flats...and in a bigger chain ring. I have three chain rings in the front to help me old chunky self get up all those hills that seem to surround my house. I try to mainly ride in my mid ring (up front) when in the hills. It took me many many rides to get used to my road bike (gears can be super tricky and not sooo nice) I sucked at riding my road bike for a long time and I used to race mountain bikes for 5+ years almost every weekend. So, Ride Stacie Ride and remember to switch those gears soon you will be comfortable and will be switching all about with ease! JULIE. thanks for the advice, and especially the words of encouragement. i tend NOT to have much patience with myself. im usually a quick learner, and i figure i should get something right away. but this is throwing me for a loop. i think part of that had to do w the group ride on Saturday albeit a GREAT ride, i spent most of the time feeling like SH^& cuz i couldnt 'keep up'... thing is i this was the first real ride i had on this bike. it seemed like everyone was doing SO MUCH BETTER than i was, and i was struggling. i think, had i been able to go out on my own, figure it out, without other people 'watching over my shoulder' and just ride, i would be feeling better bout the whole thing. dont get me wrong, the people i was with were SO gracious, and helpful, and wonderful. it was me, i was the one putting WAY too much on myself. as for the rings. i think thats part of the struggle - my hybrid has THREE rings on the front....but my road bike has TWO. so its getting used to 'where' everything is ie where easy is, where hard is. i just seems when i go to shift, i expect it to be easy and its not, and when i expect it to be hard its not. or when i expect it to be easier, its WAY too easy, and im spinning my feet too much. and when i expect to not be so hard, im mashing. OI. im doing a brick today at the Y. im gonna swim and then im gonna ride the parking lot round and round and just shift gears and figure out, at least where everything is. w the pressure of other people, or worrying about traffic et al. theres a little hill too that i can practice shifting on, nothing overwhelming just a little itty bitty one. im hoping to gain some confidence. and oh yeah, see if my newly installed cyclometer works. thanks again, julie. stacieb Edited by skrtrnr 2009-05-12 7:30 AM |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: GIRLS TEAM THREAD May Swim Challenge With the bike and shifting best thing is to find a friend to ride with that can coach you. I do that with my daughter when she rides her road bike. She doesn't shift when she should as she doesn't yet get the hang of it. So ride beside her or behind her and instruct as we ride, shift to easier gear in back..use your right hand. Now we are going up a hill shift with your right hand to easier gear you do it by xxxx. The confusing thing is with road bike the way you shift with left and right hand is mirror image of each other. Want to know what gearing you have you can always count the sprockets. But for now it seems you just need to get the feel of it so it comes naturally without thinking. We all have what feels comfortable putting pressure to the pedals and also what type of cadence (Ie how many times you rotate the crank per minute) that feels natural. If your legs start burning and your legs slow down as it becomes difficult you need an easier gear. Any BTers live near you that could help you out? You live near me in MA I'd gladly ride with you. |

So, Ride Stacie Ride and remember to switch those gears soon you will be comfortable and will be switching all about with ease! Just a thought - if you are really struggling with the hills it might be that your bike has a standard double chain ring on the front. If you ride on hilly courses a lot it might be worth doing some research into swapping it out for a compact... gives yuo a few easier gears at the bottom end without sacrificing too much in terms of tough gears because unless you are sprinting out of the bunch in a crit, its unlikely you would use these couple of harder gears that often. In terms of the numbers... it gets easier you just have to trust what yuo feel! If yuo have a cycle computer than can give you some guidance too (like cadence as GPOL mentioned) Otherwise its just ride ride ride and get used to it! HEY CAT. by compact im assuming you mean a THREE RINGED CHAIN RING..... so you can do that?? switch a two ring for a three ring. i keep thinking that maybe for my MS150, i should take my hybrid. long distance rolling hills. maybe that bike is 'better' for that kind of ride....for the very reason your saying. save the Jamis for racing. whadya think? stacieb |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: GIRLS TEAM THREAD May Swim Challenge One thing about shifting I'm not sure if anyone has shared with you, is you don't want a lot of pressure on your chain when you shift. I share this example...someone is riding up a hill and it gets harder to pedal and they need to shift to easier gear but they are working hard and there is a lot of pressure on the chain..they shift and it could drop the chain or feel not smooth shifting or make some strange noise. To avoid this when about to shift with there is a lot of strain on the chain, pedal harder a couple revolutions then shift when you let up a bit on the pedals, which means the drivetrain (gears/chain/ parts) is not under stress and it can shift gears easier. |

KATHY. how SWEET of you to offer to ride w me. i dont know of any BTers in my area, unfortunately, as i live outside of Pittsburgh. on the group ride on Saturday, a friend did exactly what you described you did with your daughter. told when/how to shift, rode along side me. i would ask him where i was gear-wise, and he would tell me, and then tell what i needed to do next. when he was there with me/beside me, i rode well, caught up w the group, even passed a bunch of people.... but then as soon as he wasnt there anymore (not his 'fault' i told him that i was doing OK, and i was,he rode on w the front pack) i started struggling again, and dropping further and further behind. what JACKED me is that i wasnt the only one on a new bike that day - my husband, another friend of mine had brand new bikes - and they got the hang of it. (turns out that was only a perception on my part, they said they struggled too...but somehow they were able to 'keep up' pfffflt) the group ride leader is a friend of mine, and she offerred to go out and ride w me next week too. to do the very same thing your describing. fortunately, i have friends that know what they are doing, and that helps. unfortunately though sometimes too, cuz i can feel intimidated by it all too. [they arent intimidating, they are by far some of the nicest people. its just an issue w in myself] though, admittedly, im not always one to avail myself though. which is something i need/want to overcome. THIS TIME I WILL TAKE THEM UP ON THEIR OFFER TO HELP. thanks again KATHY for your sweet/kind offer. [if were ever in MA we have family there, i should look you up and we can ride together....] stacieb Edited by skrtrnr 2009-05-12 7:41 AM |

glad to help! I promise the more you ride the more it will become second nature to you. as for keeping up on the Saturday rides...do you have someone you can invite that rides at your abilities...then there are no pressures...we used to have group rides when I was riding only mnt bike and I was always one of few woman who rode these rides and I was constantly getting left behind...just go at your own pace Stacie and dont blow up trying to keep up...if you can ride at the back of the pack (suck on to someones rear tire)...you will find that drafting will make it SOOOOOOO much easier on you...of course get those gears down before you hop into the crowd...and trust who you are riding with! I rode my mtn bike on a 150 ride...but I didnt have a choice of a road bike back then...dont do it! ride your road bike. I think for rolling hills you should be fine! just remember to pedal on those downs and catch some momentum for those ups! this is where I pass so many woman and men...on the down...they are coasting and I will go pedalling past....and sure does help me up those durn uphills! that is my suggestion! on one ms150 I was at there was a guy riding a small sting ray bike - you know the one with the big banana seat!..we all giggled to ourselves when we saw him and we thought no way he can ride that 150 miles...he is just here to root someone on....but we saw him the entire weekend and he made it to the end... crazy kid! one tiny sprocket and his cadence was twice what mine was! on another ms I had to tow my daughter who was around 6 and decided to join us for one! I towed her up every hill. She was such a trooper...she rode on a target bike! HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY! I got a towing award at the end cuz the sag wagon would see me doing it! She would grab my rear jersey pocket and I would pedal away...luckily we did not wreck...and she was able to ride the downhills and flats on her own...she got an award for being the youngest person to ever ride this ALA (american lung assoc) 150miler! and I got one more award for this trip...we won a sprinkler award...yup...we got into camp and decided to go over on the baseball fields and camp in a secluded area away from the hecticness of the rest of the group...so a group of around 8 of us set up our sleeping bags under the stars..was a beautiful night...WAS BEING THE KEY WORD HERE! just as we fell asleep guess what came on! sprinklers...we were trying to gather all our things along with our sleeping bags and get out of the water! we pulled them just out of range and settle back into our sleeping bags thinking WHEW...but guess what!?!?! sprinklers moved there next! DOH! so of course the next morning...we got lot of ppl asking..get a good nites rest??? now that was not nice! haha so that is why our family got a sprinkler award and I guess the director tells the story about us on almost every trip! we are famous in a not soooo good way! ok no more rambling...
