149 days!

Good picture to look at to consider where to line up at start and where it is very crowded.

I'm not starting where I did in 2008 all the way back on the beach off that picture to the right. Lots of open space behind all the fast folks near the line.

GULP. I was just thinking recently about where to seed myself in the start.

Where is everyone thinking they'll start? I'm sure there's 100 ways to determine your expected time, pace, and seeding at the start.

I'm secretly looking forward to that part of the race though... should be a super wild and fun experience...

It would be nice to see a several "after the gun" pictures from that angle.

I'm gonna stand on Mike Reilly's shoulders and dive off the dock into the water a la' ITU start!!  Yeeeeah

But seriously , it's interesting to watch the videos of the swim start and to see how many people swim to the LEFT of the first bouy.  I mean, lots of open water swimming to the LEFT of the cable!

This video shows it well and looks great in full screen .  Just click the four arrows pointing outward to get full screen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2-jVwBcLqk   (and no, this isn't a Rick Roll!!)

Great video DC - Definitely saw a few people get swam over top of - Like the one right in the middle around minute 1:13. (Sorry hope that wasn't anyone here!). Looks like a lot of people were jockeying for space with wide water polo strokes and their heads up.

I'm sure Mike will be happy to be your platform assist at the start.

"a few"  haha

swimming over isn't so bad...it's the punch and kick to the head and cracked or lost goggles you want to avoid

Hi Everyone - Here is something that has been bugging me a little (can you tell it's been a slow work week). I made a reservation at the Northwoods Inn for race week but I am on the wait list for a room with a kitchenette. So I'm guessing I'll be eating out a lot or trying to make due with things I can easily eat in a standard hotel room.

Whats the food situation like in Lake Placid? Any good tips? I can't tell from google maps if there is a decent grocery store in town.

Thanks!
Ryan

We stayed at the Northwoods last year.  Place is clean, but it's just a notch or two above a dive honestly.  The kitchenettes are all on the top floor, and the chance of one opening up is very small.  We were on that same wait list   Oh, and beware of the elevator with the closet doors.  It's scary, creaks, and most times we just took the stairs as the safest means of getting down or up   And don't throw your back out trying to lift the luggage cart up the 10" step into the building.  Why they don't have a ramp - I don't know.  OH, and once you find a parking spot (parking lot is in the back) do not plan on moving your car!!  And despite all this, we still had a great time at the Northwoods.

Oh, but you asked about food.  When you walk out the front door of the Northwoods, you have their restaurant right there, pizza and bagels to your right.  There's a taco place across the street.  To the left is a half dozen restaurants, hagen das, and this AWESOME sandwich and crepes place: http://simplygourmetlakeplacid.com/Crepes.aspx   We ate half our meals at this place.  Food was awesome!

that video totally just got me all fire up!

Now where to start the swim.....part of me wants to be like "hey, I got TONS of time, so lets just hang back." Most of me is: "Get in the middle of it!!!!"

Depends on your time and your comfort around the physical nature of the swim especially early on.

Ah, yeah, getting swam over is not the worse thing, however, it does make your heart skip a beat or two. The bigger issue for me it to avoid the kick or punch in the face, the ripping off of the goggles...just keeping my nose and teeth in their respective places. Unless you want to stand on shore and wait until everyone leaves, just plan on it being a mess no matter where you are. If you want to swim on that cable, be prepared to fight for it!

There are several good places to eat and there is a good grocery store nearby. You will feel right at home at the grocery store with several of your friends wondering the aisles trying to figure out what they want to eat. No worries.

re: the swim start, here are my two cents.  Keep in mind I'm no superstar or extreme veteran, but I did IMLP in 2010.  There were 2700 people in the water.....which means you 99% WILL have contact or some sort of struggle.  Aceept that right now.  Im not a super fast swimmer (1:18 last year) but I started in the center a few hundred feet behind the flags...maybe just a bit faster seed then where I expected.  There was a TON of contact the first lap, but as long as you swim defensively the first loop and (heres the key) dont EXPECT to get air every time you breath, you'll be just fine.  I practices alot with my hubby swimming to "get in each others way" to not get panicked, etc.  Also, I found a good workout to be to do a 2 mile swim and do the first mile at L4, second at L2 to "simulate" effort of the race.

Lap 2 was MUCH better, except some idiot who frog kicked at the beginning and kicked my goggles INTO my face.  Ouch :-P

Bottom line-you're gonna be fine.  Just accept the first 20 minutes or so are inevitably mayhem.  But it was kinda fun :-P

DC and gatjr - Thanks for the food advice and thanks DC for the tips on Northwoods. I'm excited now that simplygourmet place looks great... and so does haagen das - Ice Cream and fast food sounds perfect for the days after the race

Whats everyone have on tap for this weekend?

We're having a lake placid in July weather kinda day... low 50s to high 60s - rain, to wind, to sun, to rain again. Made for some interesting think time during today's run.

I'm planning a 2hr45min bike on Saturday (most of it at a group trainer session) and a 1hr15min run on Sunday... immediately followed by some strength training at Five Guys burgers.. my Sunday night treat for finishing a week of workouts

Good advice. I was one of the 2700 people in the water in 2010. There was a lot of contact but it really was not that bad. I did take a solid kick to my wrist which sent my Garmin 310 to the bottom of Mirror Lake.

Its the end of a rest week for me, so racing the Haynnis Half Marathon on Sunday.  Trying for an agressive PR in the 1:45-ish range.  Should be intersting seeing that the forecast calls for snow showers.

Good luck!  I like Hyannis half, was going to do it this year again but couldn't make it up there.  It was my best half if that helps your confidence, but I've only done 2

Good swim advice on breathing expectations and seeding a couple minutes fast.  I've heard that stuff echoed.

If I lose my Garmin I might cry a little   That's it, it came to me just now.  Back up plan.  310 to start, joule on the bike with powertap with a backup garmin (my wifes 305) in t2 in case my beloved 305 goes down for the count.  Did you go by feel after you lost it the rest of the way?  I train by feel a lot so I guess it wouldn't matter too much...coach wants me to know my body and not let numbers dictate my workouts so I just record them a lot of times without paying too much attention during except for mental notes of hey this feels easy here and this is pushing it at this HR, wattage or whatever.
