Champion 6539 South Jersey | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! WOW everyone, I hope you all have great weekends. I am racing on Saturday (which has been a cause of great stress for me this week), just aquajogging on Sunday, and then moving my long ride to Monday. I am going out with friends on Saturday night and since it's a special occasion, I'm going to make an effort to hang past 9:30 (I usually go to bed at that time on weekends). But, with waking up at 4:30 a.m. for a race that day, I'm not sure how good a job I'll do. With only having the aquajog the next day (and not my long stuff), I can maybe get away with staying up an hour or so later. We'll see. Have a great weekend everyone!! |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! Good morning kiddos, for those still around. I know a lot of you have had some hot weather lately, but up here, nothing. It's finally starting to warm up. I realized last night that I either have to split my workouts up from now on or start taking some fuel while I training. I had 35m swim and then supposed to do 70m on the bike and I only last 30m. I guess I am becoming a real triathlete I hope everyone has a safe, fun and relaxing weekend. Good luck for those who are racing. |

But, if you have to do them back to back because of time constraints, make sure you really pay attention to nutrition, especially in between. Try some gatorade or white bread with jelly/preserves, etc. |

Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! Big Roger on the bike bonk syndrome. I have to ride from the pool or I lose valuable training opportunity so I did that this morning. 3350 swim, then 12 miles to work. At about mile 10, I felt like I had nothing left. I drank a gatorade throughout my swim and then drank about half my aero bottle and popped two clif shot blocks before the ride but by the time I got to work, I was wiped-out. Fortunately, the only time you're swimming that far and then riding is in an IM. HIM is only 2413 meters. But it's usually open water. So white-bread with jelly or preserves is the key huh? I'll have to remember that. What about Gatorade Endurance or Hammer? I think I'm on-track with my weight loss, but at some point, I need to focus on performance nutrition and I can stop worrying about calorie count. Boston, get used to the warm air as much as you can because it's gonna be rough at the FL 70.3. |

I need to learn some nutrition tips The other breads (whole wheat/grain/etc.) are healthier for your usual diet. Anything you eat immediately before and after a workout (or in between) should be something that breaks down very quickly. I eat those simple carbs immediately after a workout (usually white bread with Jelly, no peanut butter as that'll slow down the absorption rate). Then, thirty to 45 mins after the workout, I'll have a more balanced meal. For my lunches and dinners, it's always brown rice and/or whole-wheat pasta and bread. |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! My HIM in Boise next Sunday is going to be interesting. The water temp is projected to be in the mid 50s! They are allowing booties and gloves. Last year I did Pacific Crest Oly in 63 degree water in my sleeveless wetsuit and felt just fine. The lagoon I swim in is usually in the low 60s. Do any of you have thoughts on the booties and gloves? I've never used them (except for SCUBA) so I don't know if they will annoy me or if I will appreciate them in the cooler water. On a good note, the high temperature for Boise on June 1 is projected to be 77 degrees! Whoopee!!!! |

What distance bricks do you recommend for a Sprint (400/13/3.1)? I have off Monday so I could probably get a beach swim (race is off the beach) and ride. I could do a ride and run on Thursday or next weekend. I guess I could go to the actual course soon. What do you think? |

On a good note, the high temperature for Boise on June 1 is projected to be 77 degrees! Whoopee!!!! 50 degree water is pretty darn cold!!! And it produces a much different reaction than 60 degree water. I highly recommend you get a practice swim in that temp. There's no telling what will happen to your body in that water if you haven't taken a practice run. Same with the gloves and booties. No firsts on race day right? As for the effect. It can't be bad because you get additional pull from the gloves but it could tire-you-out. The booties, may cause extra drag but the last thing you want in T-1 is to have to thaw-out your feet before you get your shoes on. Some people talk about fleece swim caps and how great they are. Do you have one of those? You could even wear a rash guard under your wetsuit if you feel cold in your practice swim. I requaled for my lifeguard training in 52 degree water. The instructor wouldn't get in the pool. I had to demonstrate everything for the class. Lucky for me my demo partner was Miss Fitness Maryland. So I didn't complain too much but I was having hypothermic reactions right away. blue lips, extreme shivering, then no shivering, slurred speech, hallucinations (maybe it wasn't Miss Maryland afterall...). Just get a practice run and make your adjustments. |

You don't want to overdo it as you only have a few weeks and don't want to cause excess fatigue. Feel free to try it on your next ride . |

Thanks for the info I'm coming from a sport where our nutrition is hot dogs, hamburgers, and beer. I love outdoor volleyball tournaments.. haha. I think I have a stomach of steel though from years of eating that crap and playing all day in the heat. I'm sure my stomach and body will appreciate me taking better care of it with proper nutrition. Edited by vball03umd 2008-05-23 1:57 PM |

Does it work to do a brick riding like 5 miles and then running the full distance? because the run-course is definitely something I need to get in. |

I can't get my computer home because I rode in today so I'd have to come-in tomorrow to get my computer. I may do that afterall. Have a great weekend everyone. Memorial Day is a little somber at my house. I don't want to down everyone, but I've lost a lot of friends and acquaintances recently from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I just ask that you keep their families in your prayers this weekend and have a safe weekend. |

Pretty significant to me to be here for the first time. NY on Mon. for a couple days and broadway shows. Also a planned run in Central Park. The two MUST do's were a run in the National Mall (done) and Central Park. Be safe everyone. |

The only difference is that the bike set up in spin class is different than the fit on your bike, so it might not feel quite the same. I don't see any problems to doing a short spin before your runs, just so long as you're taking it easy - the run is the key session there and you don't want to affect it. Also, when doing a true brick, there's no need to run the entire distance of the race run distance. If you can run the distance by itself, you should be fine. But I woudl also try doing a short run off of some of your longer rides as well. |

The base has probably 10 miles of trails for running and biking, and you can change up your route to add as many or as few hills as you want. It's soo cool! There are two hills that are just monster. I ran up one yesterday and I think my pace dropped to, like, 11:00/mile... and I was pushing hard! Also, we started class today, and one of my instructors is training for Vineman IM! He is going to hook me up with some good bike routes. And get this, there's a triathlon ON-BASE on June 14th! How perfect is that?? It's short, I think 200m/10m/2m, but still, it's racin'! The school is going to keep me busy, but I think it's going to be fun. And the training is going to be GREAT! Hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend! |
