What is maddening is that I can find all the crummy toys theat are broken or damaged no problem, but when we are looking for a specific one there is no sign of it. I brought back a giant Bionicle for my son from German about .5 years ago. He has gotten much better with lkegos lately, so we decided to build it. Well, two hour later into the project we could not find about 1/3 of the pieces! What is he doing with these things? Do I really want to know?

BigReub - 2009-12-22 10:38 AM Is there a link for BT that would take me to the first unread post?  I don't want to go to the last post of the first post - I want the first unread post.

Sadly I don't think that exists.  What I do is log on and get caught up (or read whatever I can) then I leave the page open all day and just hit refresh when I come back to it.

In reference to all the random chatting that goes on here, lots of people will put a header on their post.  Ex,  "Warning, real training question......." Personally I like all the banter. That's what made our group so popular. Or did everyone think we were talking training all day long?

I've been taught how to do "nerve flossing" to stretch my nerve.  I have a pinch on the outside of my right knee where the IT band attaches and it pinches and then burns when I extend the leg.  So to "floss my nerve" you sit with really bad posture and hips curled under, knees bent.  Then straighten your back and rotate your hips back (fix your posture) and at the same time extend the leg.  Repeat 10x and 4 times a day.  It is working for me and is a good hamstring stretch as well.  Finally I feel like I'm making some progress.  Thanks for asking.

I am attaching a short video clip that covers one of my favorite drills for teaching swimmers how to improve their "feel" for the water.  It seems that several people in the MG are struggling with "feeling" or "maintaining" a high elbow position during their pull.  I think a lot of this comes from how the water "feels" to them.

Improving your feel can make the water seem more solid, like you are actually pushing on a solid object and can feel yourself move forward.  To improve your "feel" for the water try the sculling drills discussed in this clip.  It discuss three different sculling positions each corresponding to a different section of the pull.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWmeKfOl9TQ&feature=related

The swimmer used in the video is kicking but, they are using the kick to maintain a level body position and less for propulsion.  As you are learning the drills you can use the kick to help you move forward and as you get better use it less.

Another good drill for developing a better feel and attaining "High Elbows" is the Fist drill.  It is performed just as it sounds swimming with your hands balled into a fist.  It forces you to use your forearm more and you can't effectively use your forearms without having "high elbows".

Happy Training!

Robert

Hola!  Been busy with holiday stuff and basically sick of being on the puter so now I'm back.

Went Christmas shopping yesterday with my niece.  For Christmas I bought her a new pair of running shoes.  Her goal for the new year is able to run a 5K.  She is 17 and overweight and very shy so I am really excited to get her going.  I set her up on BT and will download the Couch to 5K training plan for her to start on the 3rd.  I'll give you guys a heads up in a couple weeks and ask you to go visit and give her a shout of encouragement.  I'm just crossing my fingers that she stays motivated.

Love the idea of the online tri.  A little nervous now about getting my swim back together.  All this talk about form and whatnot however is getting me anxious to get back in the pool which will happen after the new year.  Sat an watched a few You Tube videos and now it makes sense.  All the time I spent with a coach and I never really understood the "over the barrel" description.    I also loved the link to the swim plans.   Thanks.

Suzy, sooo sorry to hear about the stress fracture.  Will they let you aqua jog?  If you can handle it mentally I've heard it can really help you keep your run fitness.

Reminder Question...does anyone have any info on how soon after starting base training I should get a VO2 test and then how long I should wait before I take another one?

Well I better get to work and get stuff done.  Hubby decided that we are having a NYE party this year so now that my Christmas list is marked off I have a new list of things to do.

Kelly I am not an expert on this area, but I have to ask why are you taking a VO2 test?   What is the goal you are hoping to accomplish with it? (Not saying ANYTHING is wrong with it, but maybe we can answer you from your response.)

dalessit - 2009-12-22 9:07 AM Anyone have any non-youtube video's of those that were posted last week?  youtube is blocked here.

Heading to the pool here in a bit and want to try it out, I thought I had the concept down but what I saw in those was a bit different.

I would have my hand pull beside my body, if you watch the thorpe ones he pulls under his body, which is why I guess was doing it wrong.

Also, I keep all my toys and never throw anything away.

EDIT: For VO2, our coach has us going 2 weeks before he started up any tests.

Keep in mind that Thorpe is SPRINTING.  Video shows him flat in the water with little rotation.  I would think that rotation might be a good thing for economy and distance.  (just a thought)  Also, if you rotate, and keep your hand coming down the same plane,  wouldn't you would rotate to a point that your hand is coming inside or under similar to thorpe?

True, rotating is not a problem I have really, going to experiment some today.  Also, I am not overly worried at this point.  Last year when I upped my swim days I just got faster by being in the water more, crazy huh? : )

Though my "fast" last year is still pretty darn slow compared to most.

Also to clarify when your hand enters the water, are you coming in flat, near the top (like you would normally), then dropping your forearm into what I will call the bad robot dance pose, where your bicep/elbow is high but your forearm and hand are pointing down, then pulling back to the hip?

yep, and if you look at the character on swimsmooth.com, you can see that his first move with his hand is to flex it down.  I think this helps me, because when you first flex your hand down and try to push the water straight back with your hand, your elbow automatically stay high and your forearm goes vertical.  Keep your hand pointing straight down thru the whole pull.  So it will be flexed back at the end of the stroke.
( I am sitting here wondering why I am typing this, as I am certainly no authority, but I did stay in a Holiday Express last week )

Thanks, Rob.

I just remembered my son's first experience with charitable work.  He won a drawing at our local Chevy dealer for a truck bed full of toys.  And I mean FULL.  He was 4 or 5.
We explained to him what we thought we should do with it and he nodded.  He picked out 6 or 8 things he really liked and we took the rest to a local charity that collects toys at christmas that I cannot remember the name of (I'm pretty they're listed in the phone book like that).
Anyhow, you could see on his face as we carried toys in for about 20 minutes he wasn't totally convinced that this was a good idea.  He has since caught on - he and his sisters are very generous now.  I'm nearly broke from a recent can drive at school.  They insisted on about 6 cans a days for two weeks.

I'm enjoying and appreciating the swim discussion.  Keep it coming.

During my swim at lunch today I was thinking about the swimming discussion here and then I remembered a thread by bigfuzzydoug that I read over the summer (although it was originally posted in mid 2008).  It is called Bigfuzzydoug's Ten Points to Swimming.  Many of you have probably read it but thought I would post the link in case anyone hasn't.  A lot of the concepts help me a lot after I read it.

A lactic Acid Trheshold test should work for that and will not require the expense of a VO2 Max test.

John- I've done testing at both UT in Austin and UTSA in San Antonio.  I think Amanda MacIntosh does run testing at TriSition Area here in town too.  I have phone numbers for the college and Amanda if you are interested.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here - Heart rate zones are different based upon sport.  Zones tend to be based upon your lactate acid threshhold - that is the point where your body produces more lactic acid than your system can remove.  This leads to faster fatigue.  Running zones seem to be a tad higher than biking.  You can get a decent measure of your threshold by doing some specific workouts (Joe Friel mentions them in his book and they can be found on the web pretty easily).  Once you have that threshhold set, you then work backwards and forwards to determine your HR zones.   Furthermore, with consistent training, your zones can change as your body acclimates to the stresses you put on it.  Instead of doing an expensive VO2 test, I would try use the trainer and treadmill to gauge  your own threshholds.

Andy and John:

There is no need to correct you as you are 100% correct. The LAT should be done for running and biking separately. I will be doing aone for running in early January. Right now I am doing a lot of running basebuilding so I do not need that right now. However as I need speed work it will become important so I will perform one. I will repeat this periodically. I do not anticipate doing a biking one until March. The numbers would be meaningless right now.

To do a running LAT, warm up for about 10 minutes, then run the hardest you can sustain for 30 minutes, take your average heartrate for the last 20 minutes of that 30 minute run and that is the number you use.

I think the bike LT was approximately the same, however, you have to try to hold environmental conditions identical if you want to compare the two tests to see if you have made progress... hence my recommendation of using a trainer or treadmill.
