It was an absolute blast...there were less picture opportunities at the beginning which was kind of sad, but a ton at the castle and I even got a pic with Winnie the Pooh, my favorite and a huge kiss from Minnie. I think she liked my shorts! Before anyone gets the crazy idea that it was a casual stroll, strike that, the last 6 miles were hard like they always are in a marathon, even run walking to mile 24.5. That said, i think the strategy of run walking was solid and my foot is none the worse for wear. I highly recommend the races here, they really do a good job. I was kind of shocked at how little I noticed the ears, except that I got cheers the whole way! Off to eat a Mickey Ice Cream head! SSMinnow - 2012-01-08 9:18 AM 3:40:25! Hope those ears stay on as you blaze through Disney!!! Sh'e right on her 8:11 pace through 10m to deliver a 3:34 marathon, with walking! Most of us dream about being that fast running at 110%. Kim!!! You are adorable and you have GORGEOUS legs!! Way to crush the marathon -- you are so fast, strong, and awesome beyond belief! Here I thought I'd wake up and have to wait awhile for results, but nope! You've wrapped it all up neat and tidy! (That's what I get for being a sleeping-in slacker!) Congratulations on an awesome weekend of running! Hope the heel is holding up OK and you are having a blast. Cannot wait to hear more about everything! YOU ROCK!!! |

Champion 7163![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN -CLOSED DUE TO TRAININGDeb I saw your question on the TM. I really don't find that I have to stop on it periodically, but I do find it hard to get used to after being off it for a long time. I haven't had to use it much this off season because of the stellar weather, but when I ran on it a lot I would vary the speed for my long runs which seemed to help (e.g. 5' at one speed, goose it up for 5', take it down, etc). There is a decent article in Triathlete mag this month that talks about what is happening with your stride on the TM versus outside. Might be worth reading. Suzy

Expert 1038![]() ![]() Noosa | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN -CLOSED DUE TO TRAININGFollowing Kim's success with run-walks in the marathon, what do the other marathon runners here feel about a run-walk strategy? I've used them for long runs for a few years and found my race times have improved and injuries have decreased but in the actual race I've just walked the aid stations. In my last HM I had to stop for a prolonged period twice when my knee gave way but still hit my target time (1:49) so it makes me wonder if running non-stop is overrated! |

I didn't run at all and then went out still did my 14 miler today. It wasn't pretty the last 2.5 miles but it is done. On a sad note, my cousin buried her 9 year old on Thursday. It was so tragic. They lost a daughter to cancer 4 years ago and are expecting their 8th child in February. If you could all include them in your prayers they could certainly use them. Their last name is Strauss. I really cannot fathom how you breath after losing one child, let alone 2. I am sorrry for your loss. Prayers and sympathy. |

In my last HM I had to stop for a prolonged period twice when my knee gave way but still hit my target time (1:49) so it makes me wonder if running non-stop is overrated! I haven't run a stand alone marathon in a several years, but like you I did walk the aid stations in my IM marathon both times. I think it is the only way to get through it at a reasonable pace. My everyday running includes periods of walking in almost every run. I may walk for 3' as part of a warm-up or cool-down, do 10" strides with a 30" walk after each, walk 90" between mile repeats, walk down a hill after hill repeats, etc. This approach was introduced by my new coach as a way to get in great intensity while preventing injury. It seems to work well for me. When it comes to stand alone running races, I run 100% of the time though. |
