Congratulations Jim on your anniversary!

Anyone racing this weekend?  I will be doing my first run race after my ITB injury, the Guatemala City 1/2 Marathon, so it will be interesting to see how I'm doing fitness wise

Yesterday a short interval run + 1hr drainer and today 1hr drainer

Thanks Everyone. We had a good evening. Our daughter's had their first cross country invitational, their team took second out of 27 teams. A little home drama when the younger sister beat her older sister by 18 seconds. My wife and I then went to a nice dinner.

48:36 on the bike.

Miscounted my days, sorry. Now they are right.

Dennis and Gabe, have a great race this weekend!! Gabe, take a day off after the race ;-)

Jim, what's causing the cramp? I'm having that issue right now in my right calf. Pretty sure it's NOT nutrition. My LMT thinks my muscles are contracting and then not relaxing. Going to do some research and some stretching.

I just watched it on the news - 'Arch to Arc' ultra triathlon: run 140km (London to Dover), swim across the English channel to France (about 30km), cycle to Paris 291km. 61hrs 27min... Unreal.

30' bike ride today.

I rarely cramp, but I think it was also stress related, like the headache. The muscle tightened up and would not relax. I have had one of "those" work weeks and I didn't mentally leave my work at work. I have done this before and I could run the cramp out. That did not work this time. As the week has gone on, I have relaxed and it is going away. I had a nice long dinner with my wife last night, I was able to relax and enjoy the time with her and by the end of the evening there was only residual soreness. I need a long weekend.

swim 1000 TT yesterday - did it three weeks ago and had 16:48 (4:06; 4:15; 4:17; 4:10), last night I did it in 16:29 (3:54; 4:14, 4:14; 4:07) - i'd call that progress! better still last three weeks have been sport specific, in order swim, run, bike, so I haven't really swam in two weeks!

Jackie; for many years I have had 'aching [upper] calf muscles' that no one could determine why, just said restless leg syndrome. Recently I went to a run clinic where they scored body functionality on various exercises; one of the pointed out I have a tight LOWER calf muscle/tendon. Suggestion was foam roller on the lower muscle/tendon daily. After a few weeks I very rarely get upper calf muscle pain!

its also worth noting that this is a muscle group that I always overlooked during stretching as I thought [incorrectly] that the usual calf muscle stretch was sufficient - how wrong was I.

I'm not racing this w/end but good luck to all that are; and those that aren't take several days off as its a LONG weekend to spend with the family - GABE JACKIE :-)

10K run yesterday with 400' of vertical climbing. Longest run since April. Spent 3 hrs yesterday doing an aerial adventure course with the kids and my swim this morning was extra difficult. So far, I am glad that I didn't got with that cortisone shot.

Great long weekend to all.

Wow - not having access at work makes me look like a slacker. Played hooky this afternoon so time to get updated.

Jim - Happy Anniversary!

Greenlight from all parties for the HIM. Just watching the weather at this point. Jim can attest our summer has been less than stellar. Just want to avoid a real miserable weather experience for my first HIM.

Sun - about 7 painful running miles immediately after eating in the evening. Lost part of that dinner. Mon - Swim at lunch. Tues - easy recovery on the bike with a couple HIM power efforts. Wed - 5 miles pushing my four year old in our BOB stroller at a quick pace. Thursday - Tigers game (Derek Jeters last at bats in Detroit). Tigers won in bottom of the ninth. Then dinner with my college fraternity brother. No workouts except 12 ounce curls. Today - played hooky, 8 miles pushing my 4 year old in our BOB stroller.

Tomorrow - hope weather cooperates for long ride (3 hours).

Mark H, good job with your swim improvements - all it takes is small increments

Mark Z, that is one crazy triathlon and of course it had to be an Aussie taking the record

Mitch, glad to hear you are good to go for your 1st HIM, you will love the experience

Tomorrow I have my HM race and unfortunately I'm dealing with some last minute severe GI issues.  Hopefully I will be good to go tomorrow, we'll see...

Adding yesterday 50 min drainer + 2500m swim and 30 min taper run today

Hi everyone! Just checking in to say that I haven't fallen off the wagon, though I did get too busy to post. Since the Oly tri was canceled, I thought I'd do a 50-mile ride instead, but then I really wasn't on the bike enough so I didn't. But I'm still running. I'm thinking I'll use the one-day membership toward a one-year USAT membership in 2015 and then do a few. But on the other hand, an ultramarathon has been in the back of my mind since I finished the relay and I've found one that would be fun in May. So...who knows? Trying to balance the hours for my new job with kids and exercise has been challenging, and when push comes to shove I'm generally more willing to get on the treadmill and run than get on the trainer and ride or go tot he gym and swim. I'm hoping that will settle now that school's back in session (for my oldest; I still have the 4yo at home for another year). I'm sort of planning a half marathon for the end of September (sort of because I'm training for it but haven't forked over the money yet), and maybe one in December (haven't registered for that because I've learned the hard way that winter races always sound good when the weather is still nice. Also, there's a winter series that I've done a couple of times and might do again, as well as a winter duathlon series that I'm also considering. Too. Many. Choices.)

I'm thinking I may not have a lot of time (or any) to check in before next spring's season starts, so good luck on this weekend's and all the upcoming fall races!

ok finishing the month off with three days of work outs; run yesterday was the hardest; clearly I've lost lots of speed over last year - so 8wks before the race to build that back while remaining consistent elsewhere.

Great job to everyone for a great month of 'motivation'; these challenges really help me commit; and Jackie, whether its the Kool-Aid, mustard, your new coach of pure drive I doth my cap to you. Gabe you should've taken a day off :-D

MarkH, thanks for the kind words. I have always been pretty consistent, but not having to think about which workouts to do when has been a real blessing. I love having this particular coach. I never really feel overloaded with the workouts and they seem to complement each other very well. I'm seeing progress like I did when I was a beginner. We all remember how motivating that was!!

I too love having the monthly challenge. It's an accountability thing. Looking forward to September.

Guatemala City 1/2 marathon done in 1:43:13.  No PR by 4 minutes, but happy with my effort, especially after coming from a long ITB injury and at the last minute almost not doing it. Last night I was still a no go due to GI challenges with food poisoning, however I woke up a little better today morning and chose to take a chance, which paid off.

Congratulations everyone with the August Challenge, and especially Jackie which has been doing an awesome job with her persistent training and on-going improvement.  Jim, the two Marks' and Mitch have also done a great job with their consistency, keep it up guys!   BTW, a little heads up that for a Sept Challenge I will be travelling to China for about 10 days

Nice job Gabe. Food poisoning and a a PR don't go together,

Ran 6 miles today in the heat and humidity and just suffered - hooray! Been a long time since I felt this lousy and I welcomed back the old friend of self doubt and misery. I'm in for September and hope to be able to be healthy enough to post.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
