bctri21 - 2010-04-22 2:56 PM As we get closer to race day, I was wondering what secrets folks put into their special needs bags.  I will share so that no one feels like I am trying to steal their magic potion.  Also, has anyone been to one of the welcome dinners? Is it worth going to by yourself (flying solo)?

Bike
- Boiled potatos with salt
- PB & Honey with banana

Run
- Lil bit of my magic liquid.........diet coke. I have given it up for this race, so a little sip from my run special needs bag will be a good incentive to run hard!!
- A frozen gel flask with Perpetuem for the last half of the run

I plan to live off the course, more or less.  I plan to pack a couple candy bars.  Payday or baby ruth.  That's about it.  I may throw a spare tube and co2 in there as well in case I get a flat in the first 56 (I like to cary two of each at all times).

rustyspoone - 2010-04-22 3:20 PM Speaking of special needs bags, WHERE are they going to be? And how often will be have access to them?

Seems to me that with all the looping on the bike and two out and backs on the run there is potential we could be able to get some of those bags twice if needed.

usually, at mile 56  on the bike and 13.1 on the bike.  They are like any other aid station.

Generaly, they try to have a "spotter" that sees you coming so they can get it pulled and ready for you so you don't have to wait as they go looking for it.

well, that's how it works on the one I did around here.

sportyj - 2010-04-22 3:51 PM So I think THURSDAY before the athletes dinner is going to be the best bet for a get together!

I will post the address to the house as soon as I dig it up from email!

Cannot wait to meet you all!

I would love to go, but I may have to catch a ride with someone.  I will not have a car untill later that night when my family gets into town.

One thing that is magic but rarely discussed....

V-8 Juice....so salty and oh so good.  Warm or cold I'll drink one.  I discovered this on 24 hour relays.  My team is full of masacists and we run 4 legs instead of the usual three on 200+ mile relays (Hood to Coast, Reach the Beach, Colorado Relay, The Relay, etc.).  Recover is a must and must be quick.  V-8 is a wonder drug.  It might sound gross but put one in your run special needs bag.  When your body craves sodium, the V-8 will be the first thing you reach for.  I am also partial to the baked potato covered in kosher salt!

I am a shy person that keeps my circle of people very small but for some unknown reason I am really looking forward to this gathering.  I am trying to understand that love is unlimited and I don't need to keep it for my family.  Sharing kindness, friendships, etc. is good for the soul.

In other words,  this is a round about way of saying that I hope I can actually show up to meet everyone!  I need it because seeing friendly faces on the course will really help me.  IM Louisville was very lonely when I did it.  We will all need each other on this course.

I plan to see EVERYONE (all BTers) at sportyj's house!

Dropped off bike today with tribiketransport, next time I see it will be Wednesday.  I will miss it but that will certainly keep me from the urge to go ride 3 hours this weekend, the taper is good...........

Flying in to Vegas on Tuesday and driving in to St. George, can't wait.  This is my 1st IM, so it will be a long week of waiting I am sure.

I hate weather forecasts! I think I am fixated on it now, time to relax and let it go. I will just bring the closet and figure it out on friday.

On a side note, how can we predict global warming when we can't get the weather right only a few days in the future.

I need some advice from all you hardcore people who ride in the rain. When it rains, I head for the trainer or change my training plan to ride another day. As a result I have zero wet weather riding gear.

It is raining here today so I decided to go out and "practice" riding in the rain to see if my current gear (shorts, tank, arm warmers and light jacket) would be sufficient if May 1 is wet. It was not! I am headed to the lbs to see what they have. Any suggestions as to what to look for?

Some course recon - GOOD NEWS water has warmed up apparently!!!

Cattle crossings - There are four of them on each loop, but by race day they will be covered with plywood and smoothed out for us. So we shouldn't have a problem with those.

Gatorade - Regular Gatorade - not Endurance Gatorade - will be served on the course. The bike course will serve lemon-lime flavor and the run course will serve orange flavor.

Aid stations - On the bike there will be an aid station every 10 to 15 miles, and on the run there will be one every mile.

Water temp - 61 as of today - they said it's not too bad. Frey is going to swim in the lake later this week and give us an update (via Twitter).

Winds - Not worse than Kona. Lovely! Frey is going to post on Twitter more info regarding the winds (on both the swim and bike course) later in the week. So far on this course, he's experienced winds between 10 to 25mph ...

Run course - There will be 18+ flood lights. The entire run course will be lit. Sunset is around 8pm, and they will be handing out glow sticks around 7pm.

Practice swims - You can do a practice swim in the lake (in designated areas) during the week. Race participants can enter the park during the week, but you have to show your ID (to prove that you are a participant - they will have a list). If you don't have your ID, it will be $10 to enter.

Air temp - On Monday, Frey was out on the course and it was 82 degrees, but he said that it felt like it was 100.

Number of racers - They have issued 2,384 numbers. Normal attrition rate is 10%, so they expect that around 2,000 to 2,100 people will show up on race day.

Parking at T2 - Get down to Town Square early - around 4am. We'll need to drop off our special needs for the bike and the run, and then get on a bus to go over to Sand Hollow. The bus ride will take around 30 minutes. Average low air temp. at Sand Hollow in the morning is around 50 degrees, so make sure you dress warm on race morning. We can throw our extra clothes into a morning clothes bag which we'll get back later at T2.

That's it - hope this answers some of the questions we all have!

I have a ultra lightweight and breathable rainproof (virtually) cycling shell that I bought a couple years back at REI.  Don't remember the make, but it stows in a very small drawstring sack.  Besides training on the bike, I've worn it for an 18-mile running race where it was pouring rain.  I'll be ready with that in my T1 bag in case we have steady rain (forecasts don't seem to be trending that way, though...seems like scattered showers in the PM are showing up in most of the forecasts over the last couple days).

I know everyone wants to be in an "HTFU" frame of mind here (or so it seems), but for those of you who haven't ridden in the rain alot (or ever), do yourself a favor and be prepared with layers, including a waterproof shell of some sort...there are plenty of lightweight and relatively aero options out there.  If it does turn out to be a rainy morning with temps around 50F, getting on the bike hypothermic from the swim and heading out in the rain without some adequate clothing will be--at the least--a drag.  The reality is that it'll keep you hypothermic.  (Remember:  Raindrops are falling from air that's colder than the ambient temperature at ground level...it isn't your imagination--it really is making you colder.)

So...meanwhile, back on the injury front...saw doc this morning for ITBS, cuz I wanted to cut to the chase on this.  Obviously not the sort of injury that will incur more damage by racing on it, but I also know that it's the sort of injury that leads to compensatory injuries if you run a marathon on it.  Doc and I agreed on a course of oral steroids (same as I went on for nasty bout of bursitis last year that wouldn't go away).  Not a course of treatment I'd do if I had longer time to rehab, but I don't really want to come off of the race with not only the ITBS, but good chance of Achilles or hip injury on top of it from favoring the knee.

I'll ride in the rain, snow, and sleet although I prefer sunny, warm days.  This morning it was raining and 40 degrees (go figure how we have had northwest Oregon and Washington weather for a week in Denver).  I wore my normal cycling gear with a breathable almost waterproof rain jacket.  I was fine even in shorts.  In my experience, fingers and toes take a beating when it rains.  They always seem to freeze on me.  Good wool socks and full finger gloves are a must for me in the rain if it is below 60 degrees.

The worst part of the rain is the soaked socks and shoes.  Staying dry (as possible and practical) is important if you want to avoid hypothermia.   Wear sleeves and a waterproof jacket to keep your core warm.  Your legs will take care of themselves.

My opinion and what works for me.

I guess I am weird, but I love the rain and cold.  I did a bunch of long rides and runs, even a 4+ hour ride, in rain and sub 40 temps.  I guess because I have alot of body mass it is alot easier for me to get warm then it is for me to cool off.  Now the wind can stay way and I will be a happy man.

I have a feeling you REALLY meant to say this:

"It IS permissible and encouraged for a female athlete who is still competing to slap or grab male athletes who are still competing."

Bam...that was it.

So far what I see is 70 degrees, cloudy, 10 mph winds, and perhaps a shower at night.

I can live with that.  th 70 degrees and cloudy is PERFECT, however, I could live without the winds (which are not that bad) and the chance for rain.  But if it IS going to rain, I would rather have it on the run than the bike for safety reasons.
