Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I woke up the night AFTER my only IM thinking I had forgotten to do the second lap on the run course and that I hadn't really finished (the race was a one lap run). My heart was racing until I figured out it was only a bad dream. I have to imagine starting that third run lap in AZ is going to be a little rough |

Member 37 Chicago | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread This will be my second time doing IMAZ and I thought the same thing about the whole 3 loop deal. It really is a bummer to pass the Mile 1 marker on the run and just a few minutes later pass the Mile 18 and you really think about the 3 loops! However, it really wasn't as bad as I expected, so I'm back for more this year!

MJ The key is to break it up into blocks. So instead of saying `I have to run 26.2 miles.' say `I have to run 4.4 miles to the end of this leg, then back to the start.' Then when you're there, start over. Do that three times and you're home! |

MJ I even break it up to aid stations... It's nice on the third lap to say "won't see that aid station anymore" or that hill, or that bridge, last time around the park, etc. |

I seriously broke it up into orange traffic cones that were 100' apart. "just get to the next cone" I was sort of sick that day and would run to one cone, walk to the next, run to one, then walk... |

MJ More than made up for by passing the mile 1 marker and then seeing mile 18, where you really are |

One of the big small talk questions is "what lap you on"? When I was on 3 and suffering and someone would answer 2, I would cringe for them. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Bib numbers are probably just over a week away from being posted (about 5 weeks out from race day). Hope everyone's training is going well. Big training weekend here in Phoenix for a number of us racing IM AZ: 4500m swim this morning - DONE 100-105mi ride tomorrow (along IM AZ course) 15mi + 4mi runs Sunday Temps are scheduled to move into the 80's in Phoenix next week - if that holds up through November we should have great air temps for race day (and probably low 60's water temps, as usual). |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread For those discussing their run strategy for IM AZ, here is an interesting strategy that I used last year (in my 1st full IM) - the AZ course has 3 bridges that are crossed over 4 times for each loop, and one decent grade hill (Curry Rd). They are each about .25mi long and spaced pretty equally apart (about 1-1.25 mi), and last year I went with a run/walk strategy to run to the bridges & hill, then walk over them (I ended up running up the hill 2 out of 3 loops just because). It seemed easier than watching miles go by, as these were big landmarks to see approaching and to target for recovery. My strategy is much more aggressive this year, but for those running their first IM, it is a thought - easy to implement and remember, and gives good equidistant spacing for recovery. Personally I found it much easier than trying to calculate miles in my head as to when I should walk.run, especially 8+ hours into the race. |

Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Kind of a strange training weekend for me. 1:40 fartlek ride on the bike followed by a 2.4 mile TT in the pool today. 3.5 hour ride tomorrow. Sunday I am running the Twin Cities 10 mile. This is an awesome race that is kind of hard to get into. Even though I got in I told my coach I was willing to drop it if she thought it didn't fit the schedule. She insisted I race it but suggested she would be disappointed if I didn't hit 1:25. Didn't seem to care much this would be a PR and I would be racing on tired legs. 1 hour bike ride later Sunday afternoon. Should be a good 3 days. |

Veteran 784 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I did my first IM distance last year and it was also a 3 loop run course, my strategy was run the first 6 miles straight than after run to each aid station and walk the aid station than start running exactly 30 seconds after I past the aid station.....it worked for me (though it hurt my time a bit, but by mile six I knew I had to if I was gonna make it the whole way). though this year I have a different strategy but if things get tough I will apply it again if need be. As for training, missing last weeks two key workouts is really hurting me this week, I feel slow and feel like a degressed. I'm hoping that this weekends workouts will be better, Today - 90 min run - Done (got 11.16 miles) 3500m swim- after work Saturday - Brick = 5hour ride/60 min run (looking to get at least 87 miles/6miles) Sunday: 2hour 15 min (looking to get 15 miles) run and than later a 60 mininute spin....
I let you know how it goes..haha |

For my first IM, I trained for a 4/1 run/walk, so I just set my garmin for those intervals. Didn't have to think about anything. When it beeps, run; when it beeps again, walk. Will most likely do this again for IMAZ, but haven't decided on the time intervals (may do a 5/1 or a 6/1). I agree with you that later in the race, your brain is not going to want to think, so whatever works and keeps you moving forward is great.
This weekend for me: Tonight - 90 minute run and then rush to my son's 8pm soccer game out of town. Saturday - 5 hour ride / 1 hour run Sunday - 2:15 run and a cold front is expected late Saturday night, so I may have temps in the 50s or 60s for the run. Yay! 1:00 ride later in the day |

Veteran 930 Morgan Hill, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I know it was discussed briefly earlier but I did notice again in the Athlete Guide that we are to wear some sort of reflective material on run clothes. I don't think anything I own has any, what are people doing for this and do the marshals enforce this? |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Math is a positive strategy for me. I like the distraction and can get lost in my thoughts trying to figure out how to do the calculations I want. It keeps me thinking about the race without actually thinking about what it feels like to be doing the race. |

Well.......it is in the Athlete Guide for a reason (just as it was last year), but last year I had no reflective tape or material and had no issues. WTC does not provide glow sticks (that I saw) or tape, so it is solely up to you if you want to heed or ignore the Athlete Guide's direction. |
