s that spring is just around the corner is when the topic of gearing comes up in the IMLP thread!!!!  Laughing

Next topic: Nutrition!

I'm hoping to live off the course.  I've been drinking Ironman Perform like it's going out of style.  There are drinks I like better...but I think it will simplify things if I can use what's out there.  I've also started to train with the other on course options (Bonk Breakers, GU, Chomps, etc).  Hoping to find that sweet spot...such an important thing!

For what it's worth, I ride a standard 53-39 on front with a 11-25 cassette.  Last year for IMLP, I tipped scales at 185 and I'm planning to ride this year's race at 179.  (I'm a shade under 6'2" and at about 192 pounds now -- go ahead, cheer for me to lose the weight. )

I don't ride with power so I cannot give you data on that aspect.  However, I rode IMLP a few minutes over six hours and was within a couple minutes of an even split.  I rode nearly the whole way within my comfort zone and only came out when I was doing something stupid like going too fast out of town and up the first hills toward the Keene descent.  I ride with an eye on cadence and heart rate and last year my cadence hovered in the low 90s excepting up some of the big/long climbs where I kept it in the low 70s for most of those sections.

While I didn't run the whole marathon, I walked about half of the aid stations and a section of mile 15, the bike ride was the critical component of the whole day.  I was fine with the gearing and think the vast majority of people can probably ride without a compact and with a 25 on the back, however, if you have the funds and the time to practice for several weeks leading up to the race I don't think you can go wrong by hedging a little toward a compact crank (or even a triple) and a 27 or 28 on the back.  Having a little extra margin could make the difference if it is really windy, if you forget your "go easy on loop 1" race plan, or if you tip scales over 200 pounds.

Again, take this for what it is worth.  I'm only an amateur and have only ridden the course doing the race -- not like you New Englanders who can get up there for training rides.

YAY! another person without a power meter! Haha Phew, I thought I was the only one! It is on my list of wants - when people talk about it I am envious! I'm thinking of trying Trainer Road - anyone having any luck with that? Won't help me outside I know.

I think we have similar gearing. I'm not going to change it, I just don't want to drop the cash for a new crank. The gearing worked for me last time, but I am sure there are set ups that might make you more efficient and run better off the bike. But. It worked for me before, and is going to have to again. I'll be in LP in June on a scouting mission to test that theory.

Also, I am repeating "go easy on loop 1" for the next 4 mos. maybe it will stick in my head...haha

Ah memories....

Must be about 20 weeks to go at this point. I remember last year that my new Cervelo was just arriving and I was learning how to handle racing wheels in the wind. The weather was much more accomodating last year to the IMLP training group. Not so true this year with snow covering much of NE...

Hope everyone is taking care with any minor injuries. You can't play the game if you don't make it to the starting line. (Jeff-ignore that comment)

Looks like the thread has picked up some action, but we must have been on page 50 by now, so I think the longest thread in IM Group history is still safe, for now.

KEEP TRAINING and GOOD LUCK!

Is there anyway to attach an iPhone photo directly in here?Just to make this post somewhat relavant, I missed a swim workout this past week because I was traveling for work. Traveling and training is so difficult! Running is doable, spin bikes stink, the hotel "mini-pool" is a nightmare.

The week it was:

S 1:00

B 5:00

R 3:05

T 9:05

Snowstorm messed up a couple key days, but I was going to be a bit short of target regardless.  Generally happy with the week, and feeling less grumpy.

Today was a long one, trying to catch up:  1 hour in the pool and 3 on the bike (trainer).  Pool has been my kryptonite lately.

FWIW, I ride a compact with 12-25 (I am pretty sure!).   Hope everyone hit their goals for the week!

For the week, I got in 3,280 yards in the pool in 44:30; 149.06 miles on the bike/trainer in 8:26:13; and only 12.86 miles running on the treadmill in 1:46 and 16 seconds.  So, who is going to volunteer to run for me the next 20 weeks and at Lake Placid?

Are you utilizing a coach or other plan?  Pretty killer miles on the bike!  Great job!

jsenc2002, what you see there is an anomaly.  I'm doing my own variation on the Fink Competitive plan which means tomorrow is the rest day to start week 11.  (Whoo Hoo!)  I'm supposed to do a long ride on Saturday and a long run on Sunday.  The past two days -- I stuck to plan.  But a week ago, I reversed them and did the long ride on Sunday.  Thus, the weekly total looks high and if you look back to the week prior, it is too low.

I say variation on the Fink plan because I won't end up doing nearly as much swimming as it calls for in his plan and until it gets warmer, I am skipping nearly all of the brick runs.  I cannot see getting all hot and sweaty on the trainer in the basement and then going out into 35 degree nighttime air for a 15 minute run.  No thanks.  I do as much as I can of the other workouts which means I usually miss one or more per week because something else takes priority -- kids, work, sleep or whatever.

Haha! I busted out with a chuckle on that one.

Hard to believe that it's 20 weeks.  Last year I was just now 'officially' starting my training.  Craziness.

Ahhh, that makes sense.  I'm in the same boat, in general, in terms of missing a workout here or there.  I am on the Fink Intermediate plan, loosely, but light on swimming.  Just trying to enjoy the ride...  btw, read your race report from last year and it was pretty awesome.  I need those shots of inspiration every now and then, especially with a fresh 24 in of snow on the ground...

Some totals from this past week:

Swim: 9665yards 2:29:09
Bike: 3:37:53
Run: 25.61mi 3:48:41

Overall a great week of training. It is starting to really pile on with work and socializing now. I am losing weight at an incredible rate as well. CRAZY! Hope everyone had a great week.

Oh! And I got to wear some space pants for recovery yesterday...kinda cool!

OK, totals. I missed a run, but I have a note from the doctor. Wound up taking my son to the doctor and then straight to the hospital on Monday. He's OK, but talk about sitting and waiting!

I did finally break 10k yards for swimming 3x a week.

Does anyone think it will be harmful to do a sprint tri on 7/21?   I have one that has become a tradition for me in my hometown but it is only a week before IMLP.

I would be way too paranoid about crashing and in taper frenzy by that time. Crashed a week before my HIM last year on my last long training ride

Ha, I hadn't even though of that possibility but I guess I could also crash my car during the drive to LP.   I was thinking more about recovery.   Is a week enough to be fully recovered from a 19.7 sprint?   I would guess so but don't really know.

I bet everyone says "depends on how hard you go." From a distance perspective, that's barely a warm-up, but sprints done right can hurt like h*ll

I would think it depends on how hard you go at it. If you an treat it as an easy fun training day, your recovery would be pretty quick. Toast yourself and go balls out...well, that's going to hurt more and probably impact your IM race. Assuming you weren't planning on going crazy, just to have fun I'd think it'd be ok. I mean, I'd do it.

Howdy peeps ...

No weekly numbers from me for last week. Zero. It's been weird to be doing nothing, but I finally was able to get a run in yesterday. I ran 12 nice and easy but through 2 miles in at Marathon Pace just to feel like a runner again. The run required 2 pit stops, but everything seems to be on the road to full solidification, if you know what I'm saying.

I'll hit the pool tonight after an equally long absence.

On the topic of nutrition, I'll be using mostly perpetuem and hammer gels for my nutrition. I'll probably throw a snickers into my bike special needs bag and am quite likely to eat that as well.

Glad you're feeling better and it's all working out in the end.

I have no idea at all about nutrition on the long course. I've been such a minimalist, but I know that doesn't work for IM.

Snickers is a good idea, I lost all my gels on a 20-miler last year and we stopped and I bought a Snickers. Tasted better than Gu that's for sure.

Used Perpeteum in the past (HIM's only), switching to Power Bar Perform to match the course fuel.  I like the Honey Stingers for solid food, still learning with the gels.  Hammer Gels are okay.

Agree with what others have said in that it all depends on how hard you push yourself.  With it being so close to IMLP, it might be a good opportunity to trial run the gear you'll use in Placid one last time before you pack up and head to IMLP.
