Artemis - 2012-09-17 12:00 PM I was in Virginia Beach over the weekend and that got me to thinking about races for next year (more).  I think I'm doing the full marathon in March.  But, I've also been thinking about a HIM in September for awhile, and finally told my husband about it.  He thinks I'm crazy.  I don't think I'm that crazy.

I think that the HIM is a great idea!  Which one are you thinking of?  Patriots?

For the first time in at least 2 weeks I think I am feeling healthy. I don't know if that was purely being sick or just part of the adaptation to some higher intensity training but wheeeew.

I ran with a new group yesterday, too. While I am going to keep up with the 1-2 track sessions with my team, I think I will occasionally do my long runs with this new group. They are a very casual breath of fresh air in stark contrast to the azz whoopin' I get on the track.

Whew! I finally caught up on posts and RR's! We've got some tri-heroes in this group! *bows*

Well my training suffered from work stuff last week but I just got some good news! One of my cases was set for trial in 3 weeks which would have meant that my training would have REALLY suffered for the next three weeks during trial prep and trial.  I just heard from my AUSA that it's been continued a month so that gets me through my 15k and my OLY! I think I'll be in the early stages of my HIM training so it won't be too bad. YAY!!!!!!

As for my kid, he said he had 3 steaks and slept 11 hours after his HIM. He felt good the next day. Ah, to be 21 again. He said they had lots of participants and raised lots of money for their mission team.

That's great news that your life will be a little more accommodating to your training! I love it when that happens.

3 steaks!! Now he has MY attention!

Well, you ARE that crazy, but it has nothing to do with the races

You have time to build up to a March mary.

Even with several weeks' recovery after that, plenty of time to train for the HIM (including cross-training until March, then dedicated tri, mostly bike, thereafter). The question is whether you have the time and inclination? Will hubs be okay watching Baby E a lot more then?

We talked about it, and I think so.  I also have a bike trailer and a running stroller, so I can do some of my training with her.

Yep!  I did the Olympic back when they still had one.  It's a good course, plus it is close, so I'd have a chance to train on the course.

I'm having a bad day - took my bike to the track got attacked by giant swooping magpie and came home after ten minutes.  Yes the bike has been outside only briefly.  Yes I did unclip and stop twice without incident.  Still needs work though.  I need to find a carpark to practice where no boy racers are hooning around!

Upshot of it all is - I am not a natural rider.  I don't think I'll ever be confident to ride in aero so taking those bars off - managed HIM in normal positiion - and in the TdF they go all day with no aero bars!

Yikes!  The Birds!  You don't need the aero bars at this time.  Good move!  At IM distance, comfort is very important.

The Birds

I have to face it so decision right now is - bulk of hours and T.I.T.S will be on the drainer working hard.  Then at the weekend I  will get out on the quiet roads for an hour or so Saturday and Sunday - just to keep the balance and road handling together, practicing drinking and eating etc.  to avoid having to take hands off handlebars too much am investing in a camelpak - with that and two bottles I think I will make it through the IM bike section unless it's a scorching hot day - unlikely in March.

All of this makes very good sense.  The trainer is very time efficient but you do needs some road handling as well.

This is going to sound like a weird suggestion but... do you know anyone on you swim squad that is also a roadie?  Do you think that they might have a set of wheels that you can borrow?  I had some balance issues on my bike for years.  I got a set of Mavic Kysrium SL wheels and it changed my life.  I thought that I was just klutzy and would never be able to drink from a water bottle at 20 mph.  How do other people do that?!  I spent years getting away with drinking only at stop signs and signal lights.  Clearly not the best plan.  Anyway once I got these wheels, voila!  I could instantly drink at 20mph like the cool kids!  Now, wheels are not inexpensive an you'd definitely want to see if a different set of wheels helps before making an investment but it may be worth pursuing.

My Madone came with Bontrager Race wheels.  I left a cassette on the rear wheel and put a trainer tire on it and I change wheels when I bring her indoors these days.

well I never thought of wheels - me too Bontrager wheels on my Madone - but I am jolly good friends with LBS piglet Jae so I'm sure he'll help me out and lend me some....test me out!  wow - thanks for that.  I am okay drinking while moving but not at great speed - getting me a camelpak!  I can eat and ride (face it I can eat while doing most things!!!)

Happy!

Hi Pod!!  Here for some reading pleasure is my RR Kiawah Triathlon.  Overall I had a good race just missed out on my sub 3 hour goal by just over 2 minutes but shaved 8 minutes off my time from last year.  Rest day today and clean up from Sunday Funday yesterday, had some people over and fried up a turkey, always delicious.  Then into my HIM training starting tomorrow and my required 5 am wake up to get myself to get some quality training time in.  Reading some RR's now.

Jo you might want to look at 25 cc tires as well for training, I used them for the PUT in May and the extra stability is worth the marginally more rolling resistence, it's a thought as well

thanks for that tip - after bike coach Monday I'll pop in and see LBS piglet Jae - see what he can help with!  Manatees rock!

morning manatee peeps!  For those who don't get to read logs - 4xSmile woohoo - so much better!

DH update - specialist says there is nothng wrong which is great.  Maybe built up some intolerances coz of stress related issues so this week is Gluten free week and after one day he feels better!  I am pretty much a gluten free kinda gal so that's all good.  He is very relieved, at our age all we hear about is friends getting nasty diseases so always a relief!

Coach update - lovely chat with Coach Piglet Mark - we meet monday at 10am.  An hour of stopping and starting as well as cornering, drinking on the bike and all that kind of stuff!  Also Gazza the dentist piglet at squad said, please Jo come out with me for a ride so once i've been coached I'll take him up on that - he is not a Robbie at all!  Hey and we all need a good dentist right?

Swim update - awesome squad last night - jumped up a lane for the main set.  Think I will do this each session, can't do it with fins on (they make me slower!!!) but main set I'm kicking azz.  3km the main set was 10x200m - 100m max effort, 100m recovery - suffice it to say this lane's recovery was still max effort for me!  Loved it!  Lots of feedback from Coach Piglet Johnny.

Today is drainer ride day - didn't fancy a 5am start so will do that tonight.

All in all feeling brighter and sunnier.

Thanks for all feedback on bike issues!  you are all very kind.

One more thing had an EPIPHANY in the pool

Ironman all that stuff running around my head.  I will keep training but if I feel by nearer the time that I'm not ready it's not an issue to pull out.  I'm not letting anyone down.

By giving myself this get out clause I feel like a weight has been lifted.

Now I've got an Olympic distance up in Queensland in 6 and a half weeks.  I'm still going up but I may decide not to race - see how I go.  Again giving myself the right to say no.

God that feels good!

I spent 50 minutes this morning talking about pronouns. 50 minutes!!! And I think half the class still didn't get it all, although by the end I could point at "who's book" and ask "what is wrong here?" and a chorus of 5 or 6 guys would say "Possessive pronouns never use an apostrophe." I felt like Henry Higgins -- "By Jove! I think they've got it!"

They learn a lot of right click, left click double click - hover mouse over....etc.  Hehe I sound so old!  I cannot believe my daughter is 7 and hasn't been taught how to tell the time yet - going to have a go at that tonight...I suppose she can just read the digital display on her Iphone when she's older right?  The hands on a clock are meaningless....

I came the conclusion that educating my children was MY job and that the school was simply a tool to help me achieve that.  I think a lot of parents have that backwards!  But it's frustrating sometimes when the methods (math for example) changed from when I was a kid.  My DD (7th grade) scored high enough on her MAP test, yes one of those standardized tests, that she's invited to some Duke University sponsored Talent program.  Also just got her progress report, lowest grade % is 96 Smile.  She's such a rock star!

My son is in 11th grade and I'm not sure what they're teaching him.  To me the most important things are writing/communication and math.  I'm not so worried about how much he remembers about the Spanish American war etc. as that will probably not make him or break him in the real world.

I thought of you last night during dinner.  We eat GF at least 2 nights a week.  Last night we made an INCREDIBLE GF manicotti and some dinner rolls! I got the recipe from a new GF Italian cookbook. I try really hard to make GF taste "normal". The manicotti shell was a savory crepe. YUM!

A good read from Chrissie's blog.  Sometimes it's good to just leave off the gadgets and just swim, bike or run, among other things.
