bzgl40 - 2012-10-18 10:22 AMhorrible run today.  First I had very little sleep over the last few days (something I've been struggling with lately) and so, well, you all know what that does to your run.  But then as I was getting close to home I was attacked by a dog.  I tried to run to the other side of the street, hoping it wouldn't follow me that far out of it's yard but it kept coming.  I started to yell at it to go (clearly was never taught that command) and when that wasn't working I started to stomp down to scare it off but it actually lunged right then so I more or less ended up kicking the dog.  Thankfully that scared it off.  I almost brought my dog on this run and am thankful that I didn't.  I'm still pretty jacked up about the whole thing.
Kim if it makes you feel better I struggled with my run as well today. Sleep and not fully recovered most likely the culprits.Dogs that chase are in prey drive and are usually all wind. When you stop the dog turn to defense (fight or flight). Luckily he chose flight after you confronted him.

On a good note, cause it is always good to look for the positive, I have never had so many people wave to me on my run today.  I think the locals are getting use to me.  lol

tasr - 2012-10-18 6:44 AM I'll be away this weekend. I am attending a Kettlebell instructor training class in New Jersey. I'll be staying on the north side of Trenton. I have 44 miles on running as of today so the next three days will be just short runs. My next long run will be Monday then I will get back on track. I still need to figure out my marathon taper plan. Any advice?

All I can say about the taper is I did better on two weeks of taper then the typical 3 wees you see with marathon plans.

I'd be interested to hear about your Kettlebell class.  I keep toying with taking that or TRX instructor courses but then I would actually probably have to start training more then just Tina to justify a cost.  But I need some continuing education regardless I suppose.

mndymond - 2012-10-18 8:06 AM Well as of yesterday I am officially in a more competitive AG. Sadness. W25-29 here I am! Why couldn't I be 24 forever!?

Triathlon was not even on my radar in the 20-24AG.  I remember being at the bar during that timeframe LOL...maybe that is why that AG is easier!

Haha, me too.  I was already 30-34AG by the time I learned to swim, bought a bike and made it to a race.  Just think how well you'll do against those late comers down the road!

So last night I did freestyle warmup then all my normal 100 / 200 sets as IM instead of freestyle.

God I hurt this morning.  Now I remember why swimming was hard.

Oh how horrible! I have had the same thing happen to me, 2 pit bulls from a ranch out here. I was saved by a landscape truck that was driving by. I never got bit luckily but it was close. At that time I used to run with my son in the stroller but he had been fussy that morning so I left him home, funny how things work out like that. I'll have to remember the stomping trick!

x2.  I don't even think I was really aware that 5 year AGs even existed in amateur sports at that age.

Skipped my swim yesterday because I was feeling sluggish.  Will swim tonight instead and try one of Shane's workouts.

Best of luck to everyone racing B2B.

I have been super busy this week getting ready for our annual Kids Tri this weekend. This is our 6th year and we have over 150 kids age 4-13 registered, we anticipate another 20 or so sign ups at packet pick up tomorrow. Our first year we had less than 20! We have become so big that we started using Active.com for registrations and had to hire a timing company because our old stopwatch method just wasn't cutting it. Anyways, it will be fun but it's really just myself and my BFF that do all the behind the scenes work, so it's a lot- and she is training for Xterra worlds (Oct 28th). Luckily we have lots of great race day volunteers. My boys are racing (hopefully, one of them is home sick today) so I will hopefully have some good pictures and race reports after Sunday

Wow...that's awesome.  I've never seen a kids race that big.  Kudos to you guys for contributing to the growth/future of the sport.  Maybe a future Olympian or Pro will come out of this down the road?  You never know...

Fred D - 2012-10-18 7:46 AM  I'm a physician who takes a lot of on call work as well. Not ideal for tri training but I do like my job (mostly)

Fred, my hat's off to you. Between family, work, training and leading this mentor group, you have an unbelievably full plate. Kudos.

I don't generally like to talk highly controversial stuff in this group, but I wonder what people think about the Age Grouper who was caught taking testosterone (see ST)??

I am seriously wondering how many AGers are doping? How many KQers?

I'm in this sport for the training and friends, not for the winning, but it disappoints me greatly that people cheat.

Thoughts?

Very disappointed but not at all surprised. With the importance that some place on qualifying for events combined with almost zero chance of being caught with one's hand in the cookie jar, then the risk:reward is going to be seen as quite favourable for those who are inclined to seek out any advantage.

Shane

I'm with Shane, disappointed but not surprised one bit.  I hope they can manage to catch more to at least make some people think twice about it.

I'm not surprised, on one hand; on the other, I am always surprised when people take illegal substances, in any area of life. I am too cautious. I would worry too much about what the unintended effects might be. Heck. I take Zyrtec and Lisinopril every day, and I worry about the long term effects of that!

Agree w/ Shane and Arend.  It is disappointing and I may be a bit jaded by knowing some guys guys back in my lifting days who were taking stuff, but it doesn't really surprise me or phase me.  What is interesting is that I remember a bunch of guys juicing who you would never have known because they weren't very impressive.  Especially in this sport because there is a lot of disposable income in general and guys don't blink when they drop $200/mo on a coach, $100 on Optygen HP and other supplements, TONS of gear, a couple grand to do a race, etc.  What I don't like about it is the pressure.  I actually was approached multiple times back in 2000-2007 time frame when I was more into the gym scene.  Guys would be like, "wow your pretty strong, you SHOULD do THIS, you would be a beast...".  How screwed up is that?  I always responded with I like my hair on my head and not on my back and I plan on using my testicles and my wife doesn't like bacne but thanks.

Honestly, I get the different angles.  Pros are in it for money.  By the way, check out http://competitorradio.competitor.com/ for a good interview with Tyler Hamilton on his book (speaking of controversial topics).  It's actually pretty good and very honest IMO.  Guy was making 375k a year as Lance's sidekick in those times.  Your damn right he was going to do what the team wanted him to.

I also get the middle aged guy going through a mid-life crisis looking for the fountain of youth.  They are different reasons, but they don't make it ok....anyway...

Have a great weekend racers!  I'm just hoping to get some decent riding in and the weather looks pretty good for this time of year so I'll take it!
