Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, now that everyone has ditched out for the weekend, I will spill my current running/racing drama. The New Mexico site visit is a go, and I have to be there by 12:40 p.m. to meet my team partner. I wouldn't really have to be, but if I did the race, I wouldn't get into Albuquerque until 10:00 p.m. or later, and I don't feel like making him wait around for me or renting a second car to drive the 2.5 - 3 hours into the wilds of New Mexico on my own. (My team partner has lived in NM before, and he is pretty sure we have to travel gravel/dirt roads to get to the site. Goody. Just like home). So . . . . I am not going to run the half marathon on September 22. I registered for the 6.5 mile Horsethief Canyon trail run on September 21 and have now set my sight on a possible Thanksgiving half marathon in Lehi, Utah -- where we will be for Thanksgiving this year. The race organizers seem a little sketchy. They have a facebook page, but the link to the race site goes no where. There is no real way to sign up for the race -- not the usual way, anyway. The sign up link goes to a page where you fill in blanks and print off, I guess. I don't know. Like I said, just sketchy. So I am going to plan on it, but not invest any money until October or so, to give them a chance to get their act together. I'm considering the 15k Coronado Heights Run again -- lots of dirt road and then running up a "hill" and back down. It's actually a pretty tough hill -- I think it measured about a street mile up -- with medium grade -- so practically the Alps around here. It's October 5, and could be a nice training run/test for a November half. I'm thinking of skipping the One Hill After Another run that I have done for the past two years. It comes right before Thanksgiving, and I definitely felt it on the 10 mile turkey trot I did last year. I guess I'll wait to see if the Utah thing works out. If it doesn't, I could always sign up for the 25k Hill run -- last year it was furiously windy. Lots of dirt/lime stone roads. Up and down and up and down and up and down. Repeat a hundred times. I'm scheduled for a 9ish mile "long" run this weekend, so I'm going to stick with that, and then maybe step back to 7 or 8 the next week and build more slowly. I was trying to build to a 10-11 mile run before the 22nd half, but since I'm not doing that anymore, I don't feel that urgency. Thoughts?? Oh, and I ordered a pair of xc racing flats for some of these dirt road runs. (Which end up not really needing trail shoes) I can't wait to get them. Carry on. I hear ya on the Lehi HM. I did one last November in Loveland, CO that was similar. I think when these NPO's put on a race they just don't put a lot of thought/effort into the communications with the runners. My Loveland HM turned out to be fine and I enjoyed it. What kind of shoes did you order? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Holy cow! I'm so far behind Mommyhood has eaten up two days. I just stopped myself to eat a PBJ and nectarine...besides needing energy for swimming tonight, I become a horrible Batch when hungry. Entered workouts as soon as I finished them because I was likely to forget. I think I'm going to scrap today's trainer session and relax before our long ride tomorrow morning. We were going on Sundays, but...football season I'll try to do some catching up if baby girl stays asleep.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by 4agoodlife Originally posted by Asalzwed Originally posted by 4agoodlife So I was on the elliptical this morning and thought I should pose this question to those who use a gym. Do you always use a treadmill for your run training? If you use another machine, how much/often? It's obvious that training on the elliptical isn't the same, but how much can I do and have it really be useful? Right now it's usually a 10-15min warm up to help loosen my knee (30-60min total time, so 25-30%). It seems better than walking on treadmill for warming up my joint. Then I do some stretches before getting on the treadmill for jogging. So far my knee is appreciating it, but I don't want to do too much and take away much needed "real" running time.
The very, very best way to become a better runner is to run. I think you can use it to warm up if that is what works for you, and it sounds like it really does. But to be clear, they are not like for like. It's a good tool to stay fit, if say, you had an injury or needed some low impact training. Definitely. ^^^ I'll adjust my question a bit... Thinking of muscle use/training, do you think I would be better off using those 10-15 warm up minutes fast walking on the treadmill to loosen my joint ? Or just put it all in a "not running so it doesn't matter" box?
Hmmm matter? That's tough. I don't have an answer. I'm sure it matters, to some degree. But whether it's anything worth even mentioning? I don't know. hmmm...well, thanks for pondering with/for me |

But whether it's anything worth even mentioning? I don't know. It is an interesting question. I can think of several reasons why each may be better than the other, but not entirely sure. I'd lean slightly more towards being on the treadmill for the sake of claiming on as they can be hard to get at a gym if it's busier. But before doing that, how have things been progressing? I saw that the knee appreciated it, but is there continued improvement in that? In any way, such as less aching, soreness, or is running improving? Too soon to tell? I've adjusted my schedule to mostly morning workouts, and more open machines is a perk of doing that Other parts of my workouts have changed recently, so it's hard to tell what is making my knee feel better: more yoga? elliptical w/u THEN stretching? more consistent running? improved knee strength? more T.I.T.S even? For sure I don't have the post-run soreness I did a few months ago. I CAN rule out the shoes. They haven't changed. lol To give you an idea of how tight my left knee is- standing quad stretch, can touch R heel to butt... L is about 6" away; R knee can "hyperextend" to floor...L can't; can't sit on my heels while kneeling. Pretty sure this affects my stride. :/ Because I'm not doing a ton of running, I want to make sure that I'm being efficient with the time/distance I do put in. If having 25-30% of "running" time on elliptical is detrimental to building my run base and/or run muscles, then I need to get off of it. If it's neutral, then I'll be happy to use it. |

That and I have one 10 feet from my bed. Ha! And what did your SBR peeps have to say? Yes, now that I know my true zones...working in my z2 except for interval day. No impact is VERY appealing to a gimpy runner like myself. |

Rant over. Good luck racers. ![]() I am originally from country Western Australia where there are many, many triple road trains. These consist of a long haul cab and 3 full length trailers behind them. Legally they can be up to 53.5 meters (175') long and on open roads can legally travel at speeds of 100kph (60 miles). When these trucks are fully loaded it can take them up to 1.5k (almost 1 mile) to stop! When they need to come through the city they must remove 1 of their trailers, but that means that they are still over 100' long. The guys and girls that drive these trucks have amazing skills and can manoeuvre them through all sorts of obstacles. However, what amazes me the most is how other road uses are so oblivious to the space that these trucks need to stop and turn corners and will pull out in front of them or up beside them without any consideration. It is only because of the skill and patience of the truck drivers that more people aren't killed. I dip my hat to you and your fellow drivers around the world. Have a safe day ![]() |
