If so where do you try to keep it? While I am not anal about it I check mine about once or twice per run. I have been working for almost a year on some Chi Running techniques and to become more of a mid-foot striker. When I was heel striking my rate was about 78-84 depending on the speed. Now I try to keep it in the 86-92 area....For information- I am 6'4" and currently run about a 10 minute mile. One thing I know is that when the rate is in the 88 range I am very comfortable and feel very strong. Just my .02 worth. Steve X2 on the cadence. I feel really good in the 88-90, the way my coach has me keep track is counting how many foot strikes per 20 sec every 30 minutes or so, just check it. As long as I am at 29-30/20 sec, I am much "lighter" on my feet...heel striker by nature, I, too, have tried to stay more conscious of a more midfoot strike (doesn't always work) and at that cadence, I feel there is much less pounding. No recurrence of my old plantar fasciitis during marathon training or marathon... combined with proactively performing religious foam rolling and trigger point therapy. I'm a lot shorter than Steve ... like 14 inches! and a little bit lighter due to my shrimp status. Not sure that that matters as much as the lighter step for less pounding. I do find that keeping track of cadence helps keep my pace up without a big increase in effort. i'll leave that alone. |

Thanks..I have just started to check it and have been trying to keep it above 80...maybe I will try to pick it up some and see how it feels. Robert |

If so where do you try to keep it? not yet but i have been paying more attention to my posture and the length of my stride. do you and where do you try to keep it. it really flat down here. will elevation change play a role in stride count? I have just started to think about/track it while running...I had read (Jack Daniels) that it should be at 80 or above. Although I have found that the more Jack I "read" the harder it is to even walk. Robert |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Totally not Tri-rekated but I just wanted to say that believe it or not, sometimes I come hear for the sanity. As the returning members know my other hobby is woodworking. The group I belong to in NC chose to make me the president this year. The dumb crap I have to deal with some days is unbelievable! Today I made a kind request about posts and so far I have 5 smart-a$$ responses. I do not know how Marmadaddy does it, as our group has only about 3,800 members and here there are 1000's. Anyway just talking about training is a stress relief sometimes, so thanks for the outlet. Doug (Rant off) |

I can get Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance though - is it pretty much the same thing? do you need it right away. if not order it from amazon, here. if amazon doesn't ship to canda, i think they do, send it to one one of us and we'll send it to you. if you need my address pm me. edit. to answer your question, i don't know. but the bikes, the way we fit on them and the fluid dynamics going on about us on them are different so i would think the books would be. I am lucky keep one foot going in front of the other... That is a good question though, I guess you could log it in the comments section; however, there would be no neat graphs over time... Seems to me that someone ought to suggest that and cycling cadence to marmadaddy and Ron.... Edited by ashort33 2009-12-22 10:17 PM |

I can get Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance though - is it pretty much the same thing? Probably like 85-90% the same, frame geometry is different, bar end shifters, aero fit / aero bars... if you have a tri bike I would get the tri book, if you have a road bike, then I would get the road book.... |

Not racing this weekend...not until the 1st. I do have 2 great training runs set up for Sat/Sun. with some friends from the Tri team. Also going to a dinner with a couple from the training group on Sat. This is my first Christmas "on my on" since 1973...yep I AM old. So one of the things I am looking forward to is just getting through the holidays and getting on with the new year. Happy Holidays to all of you and may your journeys be swift and your travels be safe. Steve |

I can get Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance though - is it pretty much the same thing? I have the road bike maintenance one and used it to build my bike. I think the tri bike one just has some extra pages on tri-bike geometry and fit, which aren't very good anywyas. parktools.com, bicycletutor.com are also great resources. |

No races but I've been cleared to run!!!! Therapist said he wants me to take a short run before I see him next to see how I hold up! I've never been so excited to run 2 miles in my life!! Come Sunday we are driving out to Kansas to see my family. Haven't seen them since the summer so I am really looking forward to it. Don't know if they've invented the internet in the part of Kansas where my family lives but I'll do my best to keep up with my BT family. |

Nothing for me, next event is a 38 mile bike ride on Jan 1... I think I am going to try to run 20-30 minutes aftwards for a nice New Year Brick... What am I looking forward to? Prime rib baby!!! I will be slow roasting a nice herb crusted prime rib for the whole family on Christmas. Really though, my Christmas wish is that I may continually view life and the world through child-like eyes - majesty and magic are everywhere if you look for it.... |
