*Actually, I need to decide what shoes I should wear. I'm not going to buy XC spikes/flats for now. I assume I probably want to run in whatever I have that is both light and has the most aggressive tread? Not sure if anyone knows much about this or not. Maybe, but what is the trail surface like? It's gonna mainly be a maintained gravel/dirt path: and some grass at the start and chute. I would say something with good tread. My Salomons are great for off roady type stuff and do well on the road too. I know you don't want to buy a new pair so I say go with the knarlyest tread you have. If it's lightweight, even better. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Artemis One week down in my boot. Not noticing much improvement. Still hurts sometimes when I'm not walking. Family was in the National Harbor for the weekend; E and I came home yesterday. DH isn't home until tomorrow night (late) after he takes a certification exam. Took this awesome photo on a statue at the beach:
Way cool! |

I can't wait for the heat and rain to stop so my local swamp dries out a bit Yeah I think I'm just gonna do that until I decide on spikes or whatever. The reason for just not getting spikes is because there is such a wide variety in courses and some of them don't even allow spikes. Maybe spikes with some plugs are a good option? Anyway, until I decide on that, road shoes it will probably be.
I love the trails too, been doing a lot of them lately. Talk about spider-web-ville though! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by blueyedbikergirl I have the same set up, but I have Gatorade in the between the aero bars PD and water in the bottle on the down tube. I have cages behind the seat too, but generally just use them to hold a bottle that has an extra tube, tire levers, co2 cartridges and device to use the cartridge, and extra powdered Gatorade just in case.Originally posted by JJ- Ok I think we've talked about this before but I've had a few pop tarts since then so..... Hydration Setup What does everyone use? I currently use a 40 ounce speedfill on my down tube and 2 bottles behind my saddle. The speed fill is getting to be a pain because of having to remove it a clean it and reassemble nearly every ride. I am considering an bottle / straw between the aero bars. So what does everyone else use? Note: The below is for longer rides of 65+miles (and with limited spots to re-fill), for anything shorter than HIM distance I usually go with the PD bottle between the bars and the one on the down tube for something with flavour/electrolytes. Profile Design bottle between the aero bars which is my go to for drinking water. I try to always have it full which makes it easy to just take a sip whenever I need one. I've also got a bottle on the down tube that I will usually have for Gatorade or something with electrolytes and will try to re-fill this at least once. 2 bottles behind my seat - I usually don't use these a whole lot, but with the recent HIM in high heat/humidity and knowing there were only 2 places to get water on the bike course, I kept one filled with water in case my aero bottle ran out, and the other filled with Gatorade. I then would take a water bottle from the aid station and use that to fill my aero bottle then toss it. It's a good thing I had all my bottles as I went through a LOT of liquid during those 56 miles. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Artemis My insurance paid for PT, but I've now been discharged, so this massage is not part of it. It will cost $40 per half hour session, so even if insurance covered it I think the copay would be about the same. I guess I'll just suck it up and see how things go.Originally posted by amd723 Just got back from the doctor. I am discharged from PT, but he wants me to get a sports massage on my hamstring 2x per week now until my race - which is 8 weeks away. $$$ kaching! My insurance paid a good portion of the massage that was part of PT. Still had a copay, but one covered all the massage appointments in the week, and it was way cheaper than entirely out of pocket. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Downside: not only does my truck need a new carrier bearing and U-joints, but it also needs a new front axle and both front wheel bearings replaced...at the tune of $1280.00....and it will take at LEAST until tonight, possibly tomorrow to get it done. Upside: Those are the only issues the saw on the undercarriage of my poor little beastie truck (his nickname is Beast); also, it meant that I went out on my mountain bike to run some errands (that probably COULD have waited, but I am impatient).... I forgot how much I enjoy riding that bike! Super heavy, but he has some SPEED! hm. I should post a pic. I'll look into that. I talked to mom this morning, though she is healing physically, the thoughts of "what will happen next" is getting to her. The med people are taking their time finding an oncologist, she is scared about the chemo itself, and just overall that she will still die from this. I talked with her for quite some time and while I have no idea of what she is truly dealing with, apparently I helped her feel somewhat better. Her worrying about the future and the treatment is affecting her more than anything. I told her that she received a packet from American Cancer Society, and I am SURE that there are numbers for support folks to talk to that HAVE been through her issues. I know it is hard for her to talk to people about how she feels, emotions, and whatnot, (I am the exact same way...probably worse actually) but I know that if she has a better idea of how its worked out for others in her situation, she will worry less, and actually help herself heal as well ( I am a big believer in positive thinking helping one to heal). We shall see, I still have the vibe that she'll be all good after the treatment, so that is something. Also, Dad did his first cardio rehab yesterday! I.e. EXERCISE!!!! After being somewhat grumpy, they figured out it was his worry for my mother that was holding him back--they worked with him and the pointed out that he is actually ridiculously strong--especially for someone of his age, let alone in general. (It runs in my family....)He actually told my mom how he felt regarding her, so that is a GREAT start. He will be okay. Alright, off to work on my Cheshire Cat head! |

Yeah, with that amount of maintenance being done on the trail I don't think it's going to matter much. It's probably better than a number of road sections I see at times. Where the trail shoes are more useful is when there are lots of rocks, roots, streams, etc. In other words, lots of stuff on the trails. To me it's more when I have to start looking at foot placement more carefully. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by JJ- So BTA sounds best for 70.3 distance and longer. With BTA bottles and no straws do you just remove the bottle, drink while in aero, and re insert the bottle? Do y'all find it better or worse BTA bottles with or without straws? It looks like SpeedFill A2 and Profile Design are the main ones with straws BTA is good for all distances. I've been using the bottle only, no straw. I couldn't stand having one sticking up all the time. I do have the A2, but haven't quite been able to set it up to my liking (I'm rather particular though), so I just go with bottle only. Do know that the straw lays more flat on the A2 whereas the PD will stay up, iirc. |

My NB trail shoes are so minimal, I can feel rocks worse than I do in my road shoes LOL and then, literally I left my other trail shoes in a mail box at the top of a mountain they were soooo awful no, really... Haha! Yeah I do remember you doing that before. And trail shoes do add another layer of complexity to what to look for as there are different methods a manufacture may go about for a pair. I don't think there are set standards at to what constitutes a "trail shoe". And people like different things when it comes to the various trail types. Mine are actually a little softer than the road shoes (and no thicker) so I can feel what's going on better. I can adapt my stride better with this improved feel. Less likely to roll or slip off of the terrain as I can feel where I'm making contact more. There is a removable rock plate that I can put back in in case things get rougher than I can handle that way though. The materials of various trail shoes I've had does seem a bit more scuff or abrasion resistant than road shoes, but mileage varies on that. Others may prefer a much thicker, beefier sole that won't let anything through. I have another pair like that, but prefer the thinner ones for the most part. |
