Plainsman AU - 2009-11-19 11:11 AM F'ING IT BAND!  WTF ... it hit me about 6.5 miles into my 8 mile run.  I was having a nice easy run just trying to get a few miles in and it started giving me problems to the point that I had to walk it in.  I thought I was over that, but I guess I need to regroup and rehab again...Sucks!

Feel free to join the pity party.....best bet for you is to really isolate the cause. Until you do, it is always lurking in the shadows.  Once I can actually run on my foot, that is the game plan with my PT.

Who is a master at backstroke?  I'm learning it and S wants me to have my head underwater to really get my feet level.  Uhm, drinking 1/4" of pool water everyday is not so fun.  Anyone else do this? or are you content to let your feet drag?

Sorry to hear that... Annoying.  Backstroke is tough.  Maybe Linda would be your GOTO on this?  In both Free, and Back I try make sure that I am FULLY extended!  I am stretching my upper body to see if I can't make myself taller (not a shot Suzy). I find the farther I can extent myself the more "streamline" it puts me.

Sorry about that IT band, Barry...it really does suck...  I'm not sure if this applies, but that Quad-roller thing from Trigger Point that Suzy recommended is incredible.  I do that and the Calf roller thing and I have been doing much better with no heel pain, or glute/hip issues...

Sorry can't help much with the backstroke, ALTHOUGH, today, I really thought about it and if I kept a continuous stroke going instead of my one arm back, bring it to my side and then start the other arm, much less sinking going on...my goggles are slightly submerged but not nose or mouth underwater!

I had a swim lesson on Tuesday night and my new coach changed my breathing a little bit to have me start the exhale sooner and really exhale it all out (like trying to fog a window kind of exhale) in order to get more air in on the inhale and voila!  my front arm stays extended much more easily, i have a glide!  i checked my stroke per length this morning at the end of my workout and I counted 17!  this is much less than my 23/24 that i could not seem to reduce on my own all year long! dang!  I will look at this as a glass is half full type of revelation and be happy...instead of "wtf was i doing wasting all that time in the pool this year???"

any good LBS should have a return policy for trying saddles.  I went through 3 different saddles.  The guys at the shop told me to buy it, go for a few long rides over the weekend and then trade if I needed to.

Nice, first you rub in the fact you are out running (and I can't be) and then you slam me with a runt joke all in the same week.  All during my vulnerable "I can't run" period too.  You're lucky I like you or I would have to come up with some giant insult to thrust at you.  Oh wait, I already did....thinking back on my bike comment.  Good for me!

Seriously, I really hadn't thought of it that way.  I try to extend myself when doing freestyle, but it never occured to me to try it on back.  Have a lesson tomorrow with SJ so will try to get there a little early and give it a whirl.  I would like to impress him for a change.

Linda, your idea seems great, but I don't think it will float with SJ.  He tells me were are built the same so we sink a lot (how that is possible given he is 6' tall I don't know).  If water isn't flowing over my goggles, I'm a loser.

Just got back from Thanksgiving shopping trip #1.....so much nicer to go when no one is in the store.....maybe I will send the man for round  #2 next Tuesday....hehe.

Hey Barry--Kim's thought is a good one.  I used the quad roller a lot for my ITB issue a few weeks ago.  You can use a tennis ball, but roll down about a palms length from your hip bone.  That might be an incredibly painful area.  Hold it until it subsides and then repeat.  Twice a day helped quite a bit. Of course, I also cut my runs to less than 10m and that helped too.

Sorry to hear that, but I have two words for you :  Foam Roller.  Two times per day running or not.  ( I know you talked about getting one but don't know if you ever did or if you did, if you use it.)

Suzy what i learned from my hs days is to make sure you 1) reach/stretch out as far as possible (as if you're reaching for the sky as much as possible while on your toes) 2) make sure you have the correct motion during your pull (the most of the pull should be bellow your horizontal body and finish at your thigh) 3) look straight up (or even slightly up, as if you're looking at something slightly higher than your head) and not were you've been.  if you do these things you should keep vertical.  If there is a time your head is submerged it's during the exhale/pull, if your head is completely under during the entire stroke you will drown.

Yep, that spot a hand down has always hurt like hel1 there.  I have not been rolling with the foam roller like I should have.  Does the foam roller and the quad roller do the same things?

IMO, the TP quad roller is better than a foam roller.  It is harder and gets in deeper. I have used mine so much it squeaks when I roll on it.  Drives Paul crazy.

Stan, thanks for the tips.  I will add them to my pre lesson list tomorrow and report back on my progress.  And just soyou know, SJ does want me underwater until I surface to breathe.  What a nut.

Seriously BARRY, you have got to do this after every run whether the IT bothers you or not!!!  If the foam roller is not getting it done, get the Quad roller, it is so much better than the foam roller, you can get in really deep to the tissue.  I thought that I would always have that pain/awareness in my heel but for real, it is totally gone after only about a month of using the trigger point kit.

Sounds like we're all coming down with some  sort of injury lately.  I hate to hear that for everyone.
On a positive note I'm feeling better.  It may totally be a placebo type of thing but I started the Vitamin D (50,000 iu twice a week) this week and I already feel better.

Now, I may have found a "sport" more awful than soccer...Spell Bowl!
My son was on the spell bowl team.  The state competition was tonight.  Every kid was given 750 words to study.  They met once a week for 12 weeks before school to work together plus the time at home.  8 kids actually spell.  Each kid gets 7 words.  That's right...7.  Less than 1% of the whole list they started with.  At least the seats in the auditorium are comfortable.  And Robin is in Philly for the week so she got to "miss" this.  Emerson won their region but we won't know state wide scores for a couple days (there are several regional sites).

there, fixed that for you!
she is having me start the exhale while my face is still facing down, which i was not aware that i was not doing!  it turns out I was waiting until i was turning my head to get a breath before i started to exhale...which left me too little time to get enough out to get enough in.

so i might have to change my sig line to Remember to Breathe (Out Sooner!

Well that was quite an exercise. Trying to catch up an almost aweeks worth of postings.  I didn't even have time to get in on the what are you doing string. Extremely busy again . Seems like everbody and their dog wants to either buy a new house or refinance their exisitng one. So my days have been jam packed with work. Up and out of the house at 5:30AM and getting home about 7:00PM. I did manage to get one swim in this week. We were doing one arm crawl drills breathing on alternate sides. I had several large healthy(?) swallows of the pool water.  To Kim's point she has to breathe out earlier underwater.. I have to breathe in after my head is out of the water and before it goes back in.  Going to head out to the gym after work for a quick workout and then head over to a party for a friend's surprise 50th birthday.

Anyone have anything exciting planned for the weekend?

she is having me start the exhale while my face is still facing down, which i was not aware that i was not doing!  it turns out I was waiting until i was turning my head to get a breath before i started to exhale...which left me too little time to get enough out to get enough in.

so i might have to change my sig line to Remember to Breathe (Out Sooner!

YOU SPENT THREE YEARS SWIMMING AND DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO EXHALE IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU FACE HITS THE WATER? YOU NEED TO COME TO MADISON FOR SOME LESSONS!!  YOU MIGHT HAVE MICHAEL PHELPS POTENTIAL AND YOU DON"T KNOW IT.

PS I will do anything to get you to visit....

Yes Suzy, wow, when you put it that way it does sound even more ridiculous than ever!  The crazy part is that I didn't realize I was doing that.  It took her about one minute to watch me swim a few lengths and see that.  But I think we have now fixed it.  And that is exciting!  We'll see what else we can fix in a few weeks at my next lesson.  Lord knows there's lots to fix

I had a swim lesson on Tuesday night and my new coach changed my breathing a little bit to have me start the exhale sooner and really exhale it all out (like trying to fog a window kind of exhale) in order to get more air in on the inhale and voila!

Here is a quarky little tip for breathing out.  I hum when I breath out.  It makes me very conscious of when I am breathing out and forces me to breath out my mouth as well as my nose = greater volume of air being exhaled.  Also, have you ever swam with clear goggles? The bubbles when you exhale go right up infront of your face - distracting at first until you get use to it.  But this way you have 2 clues to your breathing rhythm, the sound and the sight of the bubbles.

The links at the BOTTOM og the Tobacco Marathon do work. I saw the tentative course through them. I let Jeff at IOS now about the other bad links.

Anyone have anything exciting planned for the weekend?

i would hyperventilate and pass out if i did that.

here's what we're doing tomorrow. here some pic's to give you some kind of idea of the size of the trains.  the pics  change every few seconds.   almost a mile and a half of track.  and since its a public park its free.

John, you fit on that train?  I want photographic proof!   I am surprised even the kids can stay on, let alone the adults.

Thanks. The page looks different this time. When I first pulled it up none of the blue page in the middle was there, only the list of links on the left side and none of those worked.  I'll look at the course now.
