tahrens - 2009-11-23 7:46 AM Trevor - ouch.  Sorry to hear all that.

Linda - join LifeTime Fitness with me!   I'm a regular at the Tuesday morning spin class!!!

Doug - Tell me a little about the book? Why do you like it?  Is it a training book or a motivational story? Yes I am too lazy to read the Amazon review.

Since our local Turkey Trot is full my husband decided to organize his own.  All of our training friends are meeting with their families and we are doing our own little 5K.  People will move out in groups, depending on speed, and gimpy me gets to be the one in the back with all the little kids on bikes and training wheels (therapist still hasn't cleared me to run). But it should be a great time.

Tracy- the book is in my library queue for audio books...it is a book that is more motivational i believe, about a group/tribe of people in mexico who live to run...the joy and spirit of running as a group...but from what i understand, they all run barefoot.  and it is the basis for the thought that running barefoot is more natural.  have you seen or heard of the vibram five finger shoes?  lots of people are running in them and have reduced their frequency of injury etc, by running more naturally, and not how "shoes" make you run.
Doug, i hope i didn't mess that up...i have only read the reviews and a few threads on BT about the new shoes.   I have been thinking about these shoes, but wanted to read/hear the book first.
never mind, you guys are fast...

Kim:

You got it right, but it is a lot more. It is also about homo spaiens as running creatures, about the modern shoe industry and how it has gone wrong (why has the incidence of injuries gone up when all these shoes are supposed to prevent them?), how Nike's interests and a runner's interest diverge (Bowerman's original premise is wrong with regard to long strides and heel cushioning), pronation in natural, your foot and arch are a wonderful design that modern running shoes screw up and which remove control from you causing more problems then they solve. It is about comraderie, a natural diet, and the nature of men AND women. It explains how our evolutionary branch survive and Neanderthal's did not.

Trevor- Sorry about the rough weekend. Great excuse to get a new laptop though! I just got one last week with windows 7, and I love it! I haven't been able to get it to upload from my garmin to my training log though

Linda- I too can attest that you will NOT melt in the rain.  It's actually kind of fun! I hear you on being motivated after watching IMAZ. I watched yesterday... had a couple BT friends doing it. It got me thinking about IMCDA and totally motivated to get out there and train!

I'm going to do an FT test on the CT today, and then I'm driving to Spokane, WA to visit my parents before heading to Kalispell, MT for the week. I think I'm going to do a 5k turkey trot on Thanksgiving. It'll be interesting to see if I still remember how to run fast (fast for me anyway) after all this slow pace training for the ultra.

Thanks Doug, I cannot wait to get the audio.  i love listening to books in the car on the way to work or to the beach with the pup.
As an aside, does anyone do those podcasts?  Any favorites?  Are they free? or do you have to subscribe?  I am not so technical when it comes to that but we do have an ipod that i can hook up in the car.  I am not allowed to run with it for two reasons...one is my natural klutziness...and two, the experiment of no music while running has worked so far...

Hey Trevor- nice sig line  dorky!  If i could swim like all of you guys, I'd be dangerous.

DougRob - 2009-11-23 7:52 AM Today is my rest day. Yesterday and saturday I moved 3000 lbs. of Railroad ties in building walls around fir trees in my backyard. I am sore and need the day off. Tomorrow, for the first time, I am running with Marty, my new coach. Hopefully we can start improving my form and technique. Anything is better than "plodding."

BTW: If you have not read "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall, I HIGHLY recommend it. One of the best books I have read in years. I went on youtube to see what some of the people in the book look like in action. Way cool!

We are men hear us roar!!! what are you building???
And as far of 'plodding'...Arent you like a 19 or 20 minute 5k'er?? I take plodding like that anytime!!! Wink
Enjoy your day off. Sounds like it is well deserved.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to notice that!!

As for the podcasts, I believe the vast majority of them are free. I was going to tell you to go into ITUNES and search them, but since you're not an ITUNES'er, not sure how to help.

Thanks Kim and Doug, this sounds very interesting.  Too bad my library doesn't have the audio version but maybe I can put in a request.  I too am a huge fan of audio books and there is always a story going on in my car.  I like NPR Kim. (national public radio) Car Talk, the Dianne Reams' Show, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, The Story, most of their stuff is good and free.   For my long training runs I started listening to Harry Potter on my iPod.  It was a great mental distraction and I didn't get screwed up with the changing tempos of music.  But here is a question for all you iPod techies,  how do you get an audio book to file as an audiobook and not music?  My Harry Potter is all shuffled b/c it got classified as music and not an audiobook and I can't figure out how to fix it.  It does make listening to it entertaining though b/c you never know what chapter is coming next.

i don't think you can yet.  the workaround is to create a new playlist and dump the files in there.  of course don't shuffle that playlist.

if you buy it from itunes it comes as an audio book.

podcasts... man thats a long list.

Saw my Sports Med doc again today.  Even though my PT thought I had a SF/SR he still disagrees.  Said the remaining pain point plus the xray from last week still leads him to a tendon issue.  16 prolo injections later I am home with my feet up.  Still following the same protocol, no running until pain has been completely gone for several days, but way better than a broken bone.

Off to volunteer at packet pick up/registration for the Berbee Derby shortly (our Turkey trot). And then out to dinner with a bunch of friends...not as ugly of a Monday as most.

yes - looks crappy like the cold, rain we have falling here.

On a bright note, I met w/ my new coach today.  Yipee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We just talked about goals, strengths, weaknesses and stuff.  I told him my number one goal for 2010 was to beat this loud-mouthed Texan at Lonestar.  ;-)

Haha just checking that my planned wheel setup wasn't going to cause problems, worried about tumbleweeds and such down there...

How was the weather last year, looking at the results 20MPH looks like it was slow in my AG.  LOL, top 17 in AG went under 5 hrs.

Morning everyone.

I don't think we have done a bike p0rn post in awhile.  Post pic's of your bike.  Even if you do have a fancy one on order, lets see what everyone is riding, lol it can be on the trainer if that is where the bike is currently sitting.

I will take pic's of mine tonight when I get home.

If you have multiple bike, post them as well.

haha  tumbleweed.  yeah i avgd almost 17 on my merckx and you know how slow i am.  the roads are even better this year because they got repaved from Ike.

i thought the weather last year was great, at least for the 1/4 (same day as the 1/2)) a little warm towards the end.  those guys on the 1/2 course had got some good wind on the run. We're going to be great no matter what, but what little concern there is for you guys coming down weather wise, its more about the temp and humidity than the wind.  not that we can control any of it though right.   like those guys are saying, plenty of discs and wheel covers last year.

did you buy a new front wheel?

Not worried about the weather really, everyone has to deal with that so it evens out the playing field.  We race here in 90 degree weather with 100% humidity so I am used to that.

Just that the bike splits were super fast last year, winner went in 25mph which is cruising for 56 miles without a peloton.  Was curious what folks were running based on the fact you are right on the water which can get nasty winds.  We had that on the Miami bike course last year, fun going out, felt like we were going up a long uphill the whole way back in due to winds.

Hoping for x-mas to get a new front (wink, wink, nudge, nudge...)

Havin'Fun - 2009-11-23 10:22 PM Seems like the IM's are filling up fast again.  FL sold out fast, and AZ sold out in labout an hour today.
Looks like Louisville is the only one that isn't sold out yet......the heat doesn't scare me, but that river does!
Of course, I"m not looking    Wink

Several friends have done Louisville.  All were concerned about the river, but none complained.  To them it was no different than a lake - it just happened to push you south.
In 2009 wasn't the swim course all down river?  In 2008, it started up river and then turned down river.
