Good times. I am thankful to have a job today.

Stressful times for sure.  Been there done that.  You'll be fine.

Would it be worth looking for something new?  Maybe get out of there before anything bad happens and you have a gap in your resume?  Not that hurts you THAT much.  Everyone understands there could be gaps over the last 5 years.

I am "looking" but unfortunately can't afford to not work. But yeah... keeping my eyes and ears open FOR SURE.

Are you looking to stay in your city and/or state, or is moving out of your state an option?  Would Chicago better interest you?  There's always those Pros/Cons weigh-ins to sort through.

I would LOVE to move to Chicago (my sister and her fam live there), and for about a year last year was super actively trying to. Then I started dating the boyfriend and have less of a desire to move there - right now anyway. We both have it high on our list for "someday" - he has a 12-year old so won't move away until he goes to college.

I was sure I was going to get a certain job there earlier this year and made it into a "final 5" situation, but didn't make the cut to the "final 3". I had done a bunch of research on where I wanted to live, car/no car, selling my house here, etc. - I was really upset about it for awhile but am at peace with it now.

Yikes - sorry to hear about the layoffs, but really happy that you're safe.

I hear ya on the can't afford not to work... I know that we CAN live off of one salary (hopefully Tony's as he makes more) if we have to, but it would make things awfully tight again and it wasn't a comfortable position to be in.

M you're still in the Deutschland ?

I'm kinda surprised that it is Thursday, already.  Leaving work early tomorrow and taking the gf and her daughters to Cedar Point.  Their "Halloweekends" start tomorrow night, which is where they makeover the entire park with a Halloween/haunted theme, so it should be a lot of fun.

Ooooh - that does sound like fun!!

My parents are vising Chicago for the first time the weekend of Hallowe'en, so I thought it might be fun to take them to go see Wicked on Oct. 31st until I saw the ticket prices.  OUCH!

Hey, Monica!  I hope they like the trip and stay, and your husband.
I think the ticket price would be WORTH seeing Wicked!  I saw the show here in Madison.  I do not get into Broadway shows much, BUT, Wicked was VERY, VERY good!  Great storyline, characters, stage setup, and musical score!  GO SEE IT!!!!  I bet it would be even better in Chicago.

Halloooo Fill-up!  Thankfully I already know the parents approve of the husband - he's met them a few times and they were at the last wedding in Las Vegas with us.  He's in the clear, for now.

I saw Wicked in London with a bunch of girlfriends (but sat waaaaay up high in the nosebleeds and couldn't see much), and I know it's fabulous - I just wish we had more disposable income to get really, really GOOD seats to be able to take my parents to the show.  I'd like to be able to see who's singing this time...

Wicked was good.  I think I saw it in Chicago or San Fran.

The Vegas production of Phantom is pretty good and Jersey Boys ROCKS.  Could be the best one ever.

However, I'm dying to see book of Mormon.  I bet it's really entertaining.

I saw Jersey Boys in London with Tony and it was great!

Book of Mormon was over the top fabulous, as long as you don't really get offended easily - and there were times that I was laughing so hard that I didn't hear the lines that were being said.  I would go back and see that again in a heartbeat!

One of the most fun shows I went to was Rock of Ages - just because you know ALL the songs and pretty much start to sing along to them.  I *may* have gotten shooshed once or twice, but it was a TON of fun.

SO effing tired.  That's exacerbated by the fact it has been rainy and overcast for a couple weeks.  It would be difficult to live in a rainy/cloudy area.  I would want to sleep all the time.

I even thought about taking a nap over lunch in the car, BUT, coffee is a little life saver.  Got me going enough to survive the morning.  Maybe call it an early day after my afternoon meeting IF it doesn't go to 5.

Now I am thinking about saving monies.

Informal TAN poll!

Do you contribute to a 401K/retirement account? What percentage of your paycheck?
Do you put any in a savings account? What percentage of your paycheck?
Other investments you contribute to regularly? What percentage?
With your current living expenses, how long could you last if your income was cut off today (include liquidation of investments and/or credit options if you want)?

Just curious.

401k - 5% (company match is 5% too)
Savings - budgeted is 10%...sometimes more/less depending on the month, when bills are due, unbudgeted expenses (random birthday parties, kids needs, etc)
Edward Jones (retirement/Roth) - 2%
How long could we last - At current lifestyle, approx. 8 months. Cutting back to necessities....a year

To answer my own poll:

401K - 9% (company matches 4%)
Savings - 0 regularly. Have around 1 paycheck in a savings account I don't touch.
Investments - 0 regularly. Have around 4 paychecks in stocks I don't touch.
If I liquidated stocks, small savings account and max'd my credit card I would last 6 months.

I max out my 401k.

We both max out Roth IRA's and Regular IRA's.

I drop some into standards savings (more because I have to as one of the rules my bank has to use it as an overdraft account.)  But as for a good return?  It's a joke.  So are CD's.  Invest something like a grand for 6 months and earn a whopping 8 bucks.

I'm looking to dabble in the mutual fund market again.  I haven't had the cash the last 5-6 years, but now I have some and need to catch up.

As for how long I could last?  Well, we went 14 months with me unemployed and never had to tap into savings and even traveled.  If we went into super miser mode, I supposed we could go a several years if we go through all our savings and STILL not use credit.  I think you would be surprised how cheap you could live.

The State pays half for my retirement investment (a pretty solid investment and sure thing, too).  My wife handles the finances and socks away 50 to 100 bucks a month for each our sons' savings for the future college costs, and other things.

With 5 years left or so on our 15 year (aggressive) mortgage, with all the savings we have packed away, with what we could borrow against our house, I'm thinking we would be okay for about a year, but that is just taking a big guess.  I need to talk to the wife soon and get a better handle on the finances (she works at a credit union as a manager for finances/loans/credit checks and such, and was a Paralegal for almost 15 years before that), so if anything ever happened to her, I'd be struggling.

I noticed I didn't throw out percentages, but I'll stab 6 - 10% or better for retirement, and probably another 10% or better to all the savings/CDs/mutual funds.

Yeah. meant for that to go here.

9th day straight in a cubicle, and things start to get weird.

Ok... he "thinks" he met me at a restaurant - won't specify when ("a few months ago") or where ("Arizona"). Gave me two different names for himself - one that "he uses for his writing".

Found me on LinkedIn, where I apparently have my phone number visible to contacts... and decided to start texting. Gems include "would it offensive if I told u I'm fantasizing about u?" and "Would u like to be a long distant friend?"

This is a joke... right?

10%, Company matches 4%

Have a savings, but nothing regularly going to it right now

None

About a year if I cashed in that 401k, but it'd be super tight

Good times. I am thankful to have a job today.

Sorry to hear about layoffs.  Been through it before and sometimes the people they let go are the ones that everyone thought should be staying.  Sometimes it is 100% about wages and sometimes it is about who will do the best for the company going forward.

As soon as I'm able to, I'll start contributing to a 401K - I think I'm eligible next month with work and they match up to 5%.

I try to put money into savings, but it's hard to do as we're still paying back for my immigration lawyer (~$5k), now we have to start also paying back Bloomberg for the move from the UK to the US (~$4k), and I have to go back to the immigration lawyer for the next round of Green Card stuff in about a month.

No investments

We'd die almost immediately.

Whatever the company matches

I don't directly deposit to savings, just do transfers as needed

I have a Roth IRA that I try to max yearly ($5000). I also have a few mutual funds.

With credit, a LONG TIME. On savings... not very long. Blew most of is paying off the ex's debt that was on my credit card.

Ha!  That was my first thought too, that it was Cord just being... Cord.

In reality though, you might want to stop conversing with this person and have them blocked if you don't know who they are... if it's not Cord then that's way off the creep-o-meter.  If it IS Cord, this is just a usual conversation.

Do it. It's getting scary here. I had my income cut in half in 2009 and am down to zero now. You base your debt on your income and now; well, I'm skimming down the savings at an alarming rate. I looked at my 401K today in case I have to withdraw.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

I’m not going to sugar coat my experience and tell you that it was a piece of cake, but I am going to attempt to give you some advice and useful information that I wish I had before participating.

Training our bodies to work efficiently in Zone 2 will help us keep our HR and pace even throughout an Ironman. This theory would hold true for the bike and run portion of an Ironman race.
