Ooh....bad puppy!

I came home to a knitting project pulled out of  a bag and dragged all around the house by one of the cats (they each blame the other).  I was not a happy camper.

Went to practice for the first time in a few weeks (I keep finding myself saying that this year!)

We did a long warmup then 4 miles at 6:42 then a 3 mile jog and 5 x 300M barefoot turnover drills on the turf followed by a cooldown.

It felt really good to get out there with the team. I was running with a really talented masters runner who ran the Olympic trials a few times. It's so amazing to be able to have these resources to bounce ideas off of.

Afterward, my cousin and I went and did some trail running (you can see some entertaining pictures on my instagram) It was pouring down rain but there was still about 2-3' of snow on the trail higher up which we proceeded to post-hole through. Then a snow cornice broke and I fell into a creek... Like totally submerged. Even my head and face went under. lol! My cousin was trying to decided whether he should laugh his azz off or help me out. And I was laughing so hard I could hardly stand up. We were motivated to run faster on the way back so I didn't  become hypthermic, lol.

Did he at least help you out while laughing?

Glad you had a good run.  The pictures were really cool.

I'm on the border of sick and not sick.  My husband and daughter have this nasty crud and cough.  I've got it a bit - mostly in my chest - but not so much that I'm sick all the time.  Mostly I get out of breath while I walk up the stairs at work and get tired very easily.  Not a blast.

Tomorrow I got meet with my GI doc to get results of tests.  I've been having really bad GI problems for the past 2 months and lost 10 pounds in a month without doing anything different.  Really don't know what's up, but I hope he has some answers for me.

Sorry to hear about all the health issues, Jen.  You've definitely had more than your fair share!

Depending on how long the chest stuff is going on, you might consider talking with your general practitioner in case it's something more than a cold.

Sending you (((hugs))) and healing thoughts.

TLDR version:  What worked for me my first (and so far only) two HIM's:   Don't put yourself in a hole on the swim, OR the bike.  Power as a max effort/spike in effort limiter with HR as the general throttle worked for me on the bike.  Paced the bike a hair slower than I thought I could handle (especially on my first HIM) and could empty the tank on the run if I undershot the biking effort level (I did not, as it happens!), as the converse is painful.  AND HAVE FUN!

Long form response:

Definitely lots of ways to skin the cat.  Lots of pithy expressions about pacing, too.  "You can't win it on the swim, but you can lose it."  "Bike for show, run for dough."  "It's all about the run."  "Float, hammer, jog."  "Float, coast, hammer."  and so on...

Perhaps my favorite, though, is, "It's all about the bike... because it's all about the run."  For many, getting through the swim as fast as you can without blowing up (so, not losing it but not HAMMERING) is the first step.  Then it's bike as consistently hard as you can while saving enough to run as optimally as you can.

THAT is hard to figure out, IMO!  In the couple HIM's I've done (so, not a ton of experience here), I used power to prevent spikes in effort (maximum limiter) and HR to set my general effort level.  I picked both the power and HR numbers based on test rides in training and how I felt in runs off the bike (and then set them even a little lower - by a few bpm - than that, as I figured anything left in the tank at the end of the run I could empty out).  Turned out that being that little bit conservative on the bike kept me from blowing up on the run.  I had NOTHING left in the tank for any kick at the end, but my pace only slowed a little the last couple miles.  I think that had I gone any faster/harder on the bike I would have imploded on the last 5k.  It was pretty painful anyway, those last few miles, and I could not have gone a lot further...

Wow - not sure any of that is helpful, but as I have my first HIM in almost a year in a month or so, this has been on my mind.  Helps me to think through my approach, as I'm rusty and not sure WHAT kind of time I will shoot for...

This next go 'round, I should have been spending more time on the bike, as I think that effort would pay off **for me** and **at this point in my tri-evolution** with the biggest time savings.  Aw, heck, though - who really knows?  Right now I'm just happy to be back consistently training after a long time not being able to balance that with the move and new job and not letting my family commitments slip (priorities are such for me - tri is great, but it slips to just "fitness" from "competitive" when family or work demand it at this point in my life).

Most important thing is to have fun, and this kind of thinking is fun for me!

Matt

It's extremely helpful! Thanks!

Yeah, it's a tricky thing to figure out if you don't have any recent experience to reference. The reality is I'm not going to know if a specific pace on any of it is conservative or aggressive until after the fact. Except the swim, I've got a pretty good feel for that and this distance is short enough that I have plenty of experience to reference.

You and Steve both touched on it, and I think the most important thing is going to be listening to my body and paying attention to my heart rate. I did just get that powertap, hopefully I can use it enough before the race to figure out it can help me in the race.

Thanks again guys!

Hey Sean, did you get your e-mail from Ironman yet?  I'm still waiting for mine.  I thought they were supposed to announce the lucky winners at 12:00 ET.

No, haven't gotten anything. Are we supposed to get one regardless of if we draw or not?

It's a down-current swim (median time less than an hr!) over world class reefs!

I was on a cruise last Spring that stopped in Cozumel.  We spent the day on the beach there.  I was really looking forward to some extended open water swimming but the water was full of these small red jellyfish.  We sat there all day watching little kids and adults come out of the water screaming and crying.  They were really nasty.  We kept warning people about them as they were going in.  Some listened, some did not.

I was also there about ten years ago and spent some time in the water and did not notice any jellies.  Not sure if this was a seasonal thing or what.

Have they changed the course recently?  I know that in the past, there have been years were lots of people didn't make the swim cutoff.

Yes my understanding is it used to be a down and back and now it's just 2.4 miles straight down the shoreline.

Steve - not sure about Cozumel, but here on the Texas gulf coast jellies are seasonal and depending on currents/winds they may or may not come ashore in droves.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
