Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All I met with my bike guru about my GURU! He recommended the following: Dura Ace 7900 for the derailleurs, chain, crankset, brakes, levers. Told me he could see using either SRAM or DA for the shifters and based on recommendations from you I am going with SRAM. Cassette is Ultegra because he wants me to have a few, the bottom bracket is Enduro Ceramic and the rest is TBD. He recommended Reynolds Solitude, Mavic Kysrium Elite, but based on your recommendations we are also going to look at Easton. I have to watch depth based on my size so this is still a TBD. Thumbs up???? Thanks for all your help today! |

Thumbs up???? Thanks for all your help today! Sorry got busy today, missed that post. Are you talking the RTC TT shifters (return to center) those are very nice but also very expensive. That build sounds good, from what I have read 7900 is much quieter than SRAM but the shifting on the SRAM overall is a bit crisper. For many it comes down to cost, the Red is usually a lot cheaper than the DA and weighs less. Can't go wrong either way Only difference between Ultegra and DA cassetes is weight, for a TT bike Ultegra is probably the way to go, and from what I understand also the Ultegra cassettes will last a bit longer. I assume you are talking about training wheels, any of those would be fine. What did you decide for race wheels? Also hehe since you are spending lotsa cash, what Power Meter are you going to go with? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dalessit - 2009-12-03 8:35 PM I second what Tony said about the sram being crisper... The build sounds really nice, i'm not sure if you combine the 7900 derailleurs with the sram shifters it will maintain the crisp shifting.. if you're looking at eastons for training wheels, check out the easton circuits they come in 650's they're great and cheap so you can spend more for race wheels! This site might be a good resource for getting 3rd person input on your wheels or other bike stuff http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/wheels/wheelsets/easton/PRD_14327...SSMinnow - 2009-12-03 8:14 PM Hi All I met with my bike guru about my GURU! Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bike people.....here is my issue. I was told that being light a set of race wheels would not be able to be very beefy. So, the typical deep wheels are out. Does that make sense to you all? For what it is worth, Paco (bike guru) said the smoothness of the shifting is caused by the internal cables (said a lot more, but that is all I understood : ![]() Tony, going with the Powertap pro. Saris is local and Paco is pretty certain he can work a trade to get a better value. I don't really understand the "build it into the wheel" concept. Paco said if I switch wheels for a race, I won't be able to use it. What do you use? same issue? PS. Thanks a lot Barry. I thought the kissing girl thing was a distant memory. Why do men like to see kissing girls anyway? I would not be the least intersted in seeing two hot guys kissing each other. BLECH! Edited by SSMinnow 2009-12-04 6:46 AM |

Why do men like to see kissing girls anyway? I would not be the least intersted in seeing two hot guys kissing each other. BLECH! Do you mean those wheels you posted are the ones you are looking to race and train with? Seems kind of odd to pay that kind of money for frame and components and have non aero wheels. Are you being told that you will be blown all over the place on deeper wheels? Yeah Powertap is built into the hub of the rear wheel so if you have race wheels and training wheels you would either have to train or race without power or buy 2 power taps. That's why if you have the money the Quarq or SRM would be the way to go. It measures power in the crank set. So you could have many sets of wheels and switch them out whenever and still measure power. Also when you know what you are doing it is a rather quick process to switch cranks between bikes so you could still have power on multiple bikes. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone! I hope all is well. I am finally back into a workout routine and boy does it feel good. I have been able to get some consistency going and everything is feeling pretty good. I have found one issue though and I don't know if anyone else has experienced this. During my time off, I have gained about 7 pounds! It's hard to scale back your eating habits when you are used to eating a ton of food, but still lose weight. I guess I have two options - train harder or change habits. I think I am going with the change habits approach since I don't want to push myself too hard right now. This happen to anyone else? Good luck with your marathon this weekend Kim! Run fast! Sorry, if I missed anyone else who is racing. I have only gone back a few pages, but good luck to you too! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Suzy, after thinking about it I assume the wheel decision is based on you getting blown around. Maybe look at the 404's, or something of a similar depth, reynolds and easton make ones around the same depth. |

I'm gained about 7 to 9 lbs in the last few months as well. I know I am starting my build to Lonestar program in 2 weeks. I know at that time the lbs will drop again. Enjoy the time man!!! IM Louisville will ramp up soon enough. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Suzy: Look at the bikes the pro ladies ride in Kona. Some of those women are also around 100 lbs. and they ride "deep" wheels. I hear Kona can be a little windy. So I am not sure I agree with the argument that such wheels are not right for you. Doug |

Yep, SRM is the "gold" standard for Power Meters, also the most expensive. Quarq is the new kid on the block but have heard nothing but good things about their power meters and even better stuff about their customer service. There is a new one coming out sometime soon that I am interested in which goes into the spindle of a speedplay pedal, that would be sweet if it works out. They are both wireless and broadcast to ANT+ devices so you could use the Garmin 705, Garmin 310xt as head units to get the power, also Saris is coming out with the Joule which is supposed to be pretty sweet and display a lot of info at once. Also, yes they all measure watts And I think the 404 or similar depth should be fine for you. Edited by dalessit 2009-12-04 8:42 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Please excuse me if I missed the answer in previous wheel discussions, but I don't see the purpose of buying race wheels and separate training wheels. If she gets SRAM power tap built into the wheel why not buy a wheel that is appropriate for both? I know Stinger and HED make great wheels that are built for training and racing. That is my plan anyway when the finances allow. I have several friends that have that setup and love it. Now if she were going with a full disc that would be different but I don't think that was the plan. And to tack on to Doug's point about deep wheels and wind resistance, just remember that the deeper the wheel the greater the weight so there is a balance to be had there. Also the type of terrain you ride. I laugh when I see guys around here mashing up our hills on full discs. If you plan on doing some descent hill work (which I believe IMWI has) then keep that in mind when you are adding weight with a deep wheel. Just my uneducated 2 cents. |

Main reason for more than one set (if you can afford) is to reduce the chance of banging them up. Every wheel can be used for both training and racing, though if you use a carbon braking surface you need special brake pads that cost more so that would add a bit more expense. If you pay 2k for a set of wheels would suck if you pull a John and have to replace wheels as well as the bike. hehe and to correct your post, Power tap goes in the hub, SRM (not SRAM) is the power meter that is built into the crankset. |
