Thanks for all the words of encouragement.  I love this group!  It has exceeded my expectations in providing support and info in such a short time.

John - We do need to connect on the 17th after the Houston HM.  I hope the weather is as great as it was last year.  My wife has had a tough time training for this one, but she is determined to do it.  I am really proud of her.

I have no races scheduled yet, so I am focused on training.  This morning's swim was interesting and hopeful.  After reading many of the links, I decided I needed to focus on head positioning (looking down like at my feet) and reach (the comparison to reaching up to a high shelf was very useful).  It was an awkward session as I was thinking through each stroke.  With so much to think about, I decided to not count strokes like I usually do until the final 25m length.  So, I counted 26 strokes for the final length when I usually do 29/30.  Hmmm, did not feel like a breakthrough, and not ready to say that it was, but it was very encouraging.

Work is winding down so I can look forward to a few days off with the family and holiday fun.  Each year gets more special as the kids get older.  We will be traveling up to Missouri after Christmas driving up through Dallas and Oklahoma.  The kids love a road trip, so lots of fun ahead.Smile

Happy Holidays!

Glen

QUESTION:

My butt is not adjusting to my trainer. I am really in serious pain every time I get on... I expected this after taking a break from biking to train for/run a marathon, but I didn't expect the pain to continue so long! In my past experience I really only remember it hurting for a session or 2 and that is was mostly just annoying. This time around it hurts and I actually fear it when I get on the bike and am at times just cringing and shifting around trying to endure it. Pretty frustrating. The butt bones are sore when I'm not on the bike too -- sitting is fine but if I apply pressure to them they are tender and feel bruised.

Do I just suck it up and keep on keepin' on? I don't think it's a saddle issue at this point, I just think it's a punishiment for being off the bike. Anyone got any tips to help get through this? I've only been riding in tri shorts, so I think next time I might try some more padded shorts, but I tend to prefer just the tri shorts padding. That's about the only variable I can think to try at this point, though.

One other point of note is that I have a road bike and no aero bars at this point, but that shouldn't matter. I did some 4-hour trainer rides last spring, so I know I can endure! (I do plan to get aero bars and get re-fitted for them after the holidays.)

HELP!!

It usually takes me several weeks to adjust to the bike, be it from being off of it or from changing saddles / positions...  Trying to break my butt into an Adamo saddle now - it sits way different than my profile design...

This morning I did pilates then crossfit classes, ran and then an aqua aerobics class. I'm working on developing my core and I think it's helping.

Anyone else do cross training? strength?

I actually took my aerobars off for the winter and then had to change the seat et al back to a road bike position.  I did not get it right the first time and we had to tweak it twice before my parts weren't sore.  You might try having your bike mechanic tweak it and watch you pedal until you feel comfortable.

I do some p90X, but mainly focus on Ab Ripper and select chest, shoulder and back exercises from the videos.   I am not a huge fan of strength training so do it rather reluctantly if I find it i my plan.

looking at your logs, you got back on the bike on the 8th, first time since september 22nd.  you've got 8 rides in since all in the 13 - 15 mile range.  this is great!  but maybe some more time in the saddle will do it.  mine was this sore for this long, but not to the point where i feared getting on.  that ain't good.  definatley throw on some bike shorts.

i think i can get my hands on a terry butterfly, the female one and send it your way if you want to try that too.

4 hours on the trainer.  wtf is the matter with you!?!

Wow - pilates, crossfit, running and aqua areobics.  Definitely cannot keep up with you there.

FWIW, I am doing a strength training session with a personal trainer once a week (including tonight), and a couple of times a week I am doing the P90X ab ripper that Suzy mentioned (the feifer scissors kill me every time).  I am doing the personal training to focus on core strength, which is something I think I need to work on.

For realz?? The guy who did my bike fit suggested that saddle to try when I need to replace mine. So far I've been fine on the one I have (stock that came with my bike) but I know it won't last forever.

And yeah -- I took a LONG break from the bike, I totally get that, and know I haven't been on TOO much longer. I was mentally prepared for it to hurt 2-3 times but not 8. So yeah, I'll try the bike shorts and will continue to suck it up. I'm remembering in the past that when I wasn't on my bike I was at least doing Body Shop classes at the Y and therefore spinning for 30 min. 2x a week so I guess that kept the butt bones happy.

Four hours on the trainer... crazy, yes. But the plan called for bike rides that long and I am a bit anal when it comes to following a plan. If it was raining heavily I wasn't going to be outside. And I figure if you can endure a long trainer ride, the bike leg of the HIM would be that much easier, right?!

I appreciate everyone's feedback!! Right now I'm just happy not to ride tomorrow, LOL! Although I do sometimes think maybe I should just get on for 30 minutes every day until it's all better!

I have always been fascinated with Crossfit and would love to try it. At this point I can't bring myself to throw money at it when we are paying our monthly Y membership (which is perfect for my swimming, plus I like Yoga and other classes). Some day I would love to try it, though. I never do enough strength training. I always think about it but when it comes down to it I just don't make the time to do it (same with core -- which I know is so important! I totally go in spurts of doing that!). A girlfriend who is a personal trainer keeps hounding me to do more strength stuff so I don't lose muscle mass as I get older. I know she's right... You had quite a morning doing all that you did. Great job!!!

The killer exercise for me in Ab Ripper is climbing the legs---HATE IT!  Pretty much love everything else!

Wow, does anyone else feel overwhelmed by the holidays?  I am usually super consistent with getting my workouts in...but these days I feel like I am running out of hours in the day.  I did a 90 min bike at 5:30 this morning, walked Ripley at the canyon, somehow ate breakfast, came to work, (where it seems everyone is having an emergency about something), have to do a whole bunch of baking tonight AND I see that I am supposed to get a swim in, too???  (THAT is not going to happen- will make it up this weekend)

I think I had gotten used to the marathon training, where the toughest day was Sunday...once you throw the longer bike workouts in there, everything gets crazy.  Okay, deep breath...sorry.  It's just that today, I started laughing, instead of crying this morning (in between dog and breakfast) after folding 2 loads of laundry only to see three more baskets clean and ready to fold!!!!  And there are just two of us!

So, Suzy in answer to your question, I look forward to seeing family, having a few days off and hopefully getting our house clean and presentable.  I will, however be working tomorrow until 3pm~  ah, thanks for listening, guys.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!!!

Kyla.... I would suggest trying a different saddle. Too much time is one thing, but if you are not happy your not happy.... Have you adjusted your seat height (maybe too high- a lot of pressure)?  My wife love's the TERRY BUTTERFLY!  Try different things out!

SUZY- 2 words: FAMILY, VACATION!  That is what I am looking forward to!!!

doing some intervals on the track and were trying to make light of the workout, so here it is for your Christmas enjoyment:

(Sung in the count down cadence of the 12 Days of X-Mas)

Ten laps of sweating
Nine laps of panting
Eight laps of groaning
Seven laps of whining
Six laps of soreness
FIVE mooorrrrreeee flip-in' laps
Four snarky comments
Three dry heaves
Two sweaty shoes
And a great workout for me.

It's Wednesday!  Anyone racing this holiday weekend?  Tell us about it!

And if you aren't racing, what's the one thing you are looking forward to over the Holiday?

For me, it is catching up with a lot of friends and family I rarely see for parties in Madison and at our place in Northern Wisconsin.  I'm off work from today through January 3rd so plenty of time to relax and just hang out! The Shain's lead a stress free life over the holidays!

PS Two other websites I love are Triathlete and Endurance Corner.

No racing.  Will be spending time in Oklahoma with my three kids.  And at any given moment of the day, I love two of them very much.

OMG that is hilarious and I can totally relate!!!   Hope you have a few moments where all three come into play over the next couple days.

Three dry heaves
Two sweaty shoes
And a great workout for me.

Uhm, how come you didn't do 12 laps if you are singing to the 12 days of Christmas? SLACKER!

kkcbelle - 2009-12-23 2:15 PM QUESTION:

HELP!!

If it is more in your glut muscle try stretching it out more. A good stretch is to sit up in a chair (not John's 12 ounce curl position) Back straight. Put one leg over the knee of the other. Bend forward at the hips but don't let your back curl. Keep it as straight as possible. This has helped me quite a bit with the glut problem I had/have.

Hey all--no races here this weekend. Looking forward to some down time from work. As the gym and pool is closed on Christmas day, I am swapping my off day to Fri. Looking forward to adding workouts and trying to con some of my awesome master's swimmer friends into running and tri training with me. (They might beat the pants off of me in the pool, but I can make up the distance later...) Maybe hitting 15 this weekend and actually doing a long ride this weekend on the trainer.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday!
Krista
