Master 1531 TORONTO | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! AbbieR - 2012-11-29 1:40 PM Question for those of you with kids.....as you change your nutrition (I hate the word "diet"), do you make changes to what your kids are eating as well? Do you talk to them about nutrition? This weekend I had a chat with my 10-year old niece about health/nutrition and I asked her if they talk about health/nutrition in school. She said "Are you kidding? We have the Dippin Dots (this is kinda like ice cream for those who don't know) truck come to school every Thursday as a school fund-raiser!" I realize schools are way under-funded, especially here in CA (and my brother lives in a GOOD district) but this is just sad. I made the mistake of saying we were going to make changes to our 'diet' and so my daughter told her friends I had her on a diet (which she doesn't need) and I was surrounded one night at the daycare with parents asking why. Geesh! I'm very fortunate that my child's health teacher talks a lot about making wise choices and in fact they watched "Supersize Me" and portions of "Food Inc" in school. She no longer wants to eat McDonalds though I'm a little disturbed about Supersize as I recall sections where he talked about how it affected his sexual performance and now my daughter says "he was talking about how his penis doesn't work". She thinks it's for pee-ing and nothing else and I'm happy to let her think this for a while longer!!! I try to feed my daughter what I eat and for the most part it's good. Lately she's been not too happy (paleo). I'll slip in things to her diet that I wouldn't eat. Parmesan on noodles, white bread for sandwiches, crackers and cheese but I'm watchful and will start adding in more fruits and veggies if I think her 'diet' is out of whack. Food is a commodity at the school for kids her age (10). Surprisingly she'll hawk her cherry tomatoes for a candy ring pop! (not sure about the kid that wants the tomatoes). |

Master 1531 TORONTO | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! Geesh! It's really demotivating how my weight just stays relatively the same. Like a 3 pound fluctuation - some days 141 and others 143 but I feel as though I've been trying for AGES to get below 140 and just no dice. I've mostly given up grains, legumes, DAIRY (I was a cheese hore ) and still nothing. I guess the diet changes just offset the fact I haven't been doing cardio so still maintaining. I need to burn more and I probably need to do some portion control though I don't think I'm out of whack. Some days I actually feel a bit weak and think I'm not eating enough. *SIGH* Constant effort - then you see others just mow down on anything they want with no effect. hee hee edited to fix the 'cheese hore' comment as the correct spelling made the moderators delete it ha ha Edited by kimmax 2012-11-30 6:00 AM |

Master 1480 Southwest Chicago 'burbs | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! I'm down a little over a pound from last week... and FINALLY hit the 140's! Now, I just need to stay there... Down a total of 5.2 pounds since we started this (I lost and re-lost 4 pounds of that...) and while it's slow-going, I'm pretty pleased with my progress. I'm eating mostly healthy while still indulging a little bit and I haven't really started doing any training, other than making sure that I'm vaguely active (mostly walking the dog). Motivation to start doing more sweating is starting to simmer, though. |

I have been working at it, but half azzed. Mostly I have been trying to work out more. My diet is generally really clean. Lots of fish, veggies, some cheese and eggs. It is the portions at the evening meal that get me. Must. Work. Harder! |

Also, make sure you are getting SOME healthy fats in there. Sometimes upping the calories just a little will actually get your body to shed some pounds and add energy. |

Expert 1694 Illinois | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! OK Downers, here is some motivation for you. I went biking yesterday with a friend who just completed IMAZ. She PR'd by 2.5 HOURS. This was her second IM. Granted, her first was Wisconsin with its wicked hilly bike, so she attributed some of the success to that. However, she also reined in her nutrition. She prepared all meals ahead of time, described her philosophy as mostly paleo with yogurt and more carbs prior to longer workouts. In the process she lost 15 pounds, which made it easier to recover, which translates to fewer skipped workouts. We are riding again this weekend so I hope to hear more about her approach. |

Master 1457 MidWest | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! Back again! This whole weight thing is starting to frustrate me. My mojo is kinda lacking, I have no follow through right now. My clothes are still fitting the way they did, so that's good news. I have registered for a few races the rest of this year and into the 1stsix months on 2013. I downloaded a marathon training plan that starts in mid-February. With a 10 mile trail race registered for on the 29th of December I am hoping to get back into it. I really want to get back to eating the way I was. Lots of veggies and fruit with smaller amounts of meat. UGH! I hate starting over but I have a whole new month to play with and I'd like to see more pink. |

Regular 137 Lansing, Michigan | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! Down to 205.5 this Friday/Saturday. While the change in weight is nice, I have been trying to focus on how I feel and progress related to performance in running, weight lifting, etc. I feel happier with this 205 than the 205 last year. Transitioning into trail running has been a little frustrating as far as times and distance, but I am trying to keep in mind that I'm no longer running a flat, paved, and predictable route (exactly why I am running trails in the first place). My work load should be reduced this week as teaching wraps up on Tuesday (I teach biology labs from 3-7 on Tues and Thurs). Perhaps that will allow me more time to run/work out. Getting home around 8 at night kinda kills the desire to do anything. Congrats to everyone that has made strides towards their goals or is still working at them. |

I started running trails this past summer and really got into the races this fall. I have a hard time with separating time/distance for trail vs. road. The good thing I've noticed is that my road times have improved since beginning running trails! |

Tried to keep eating under control, but with no training I had nowhere to burn off calories and went up 3. Also bad news cause I have a race on Sunday and didn't want to take a week off training. Looks like I woun't be looking to set a new PR this week. Good news is I am feeling better, ready to get back to S/B/R training and I am in charge of meals this week. I expect to get back down quickly. |

I think I need to get my 10yo daughter up to Olympic tri capability... she helps me hold down a pace that I feel I could hold forever! This Saturday is our 5K race. I'm hoping she'll be motivated enough to beat her 45minute PR. Whether she does or doesn't, I Know she's hooked, and that makes me happy! As for me... weight seems steady. I've only been hopping on the scale about every 10 days. I'll update you tomorrow! |
