The company starts with "F", so the program abbreviation is FAP. I can't make this up. I'm giggling. That's pretty awesome! We are acronym crazy here. Our company name starts with "S" - SWEPT, SEARCH and SOAP are three of my favorites Hehehe... FAP! Nothing like that here, we've just made the entire firm into an acronym... MBHB otherwise it's just too long to say. LISA - what's the word on the bike??? |

Probably average. What's that law that says most people are promoted to their level of incompetence? I firmly believe in that theory. Even in MY position, I've stated that I'm not sure I want to move up or go into management but am being almost PUSHED that way. I have a gut feeling I'd be terrible at it, but am being forced to take classes to "explore" my leadership style and "identify" gaps to get me where I need to be. My jobs... almost half have been what I'd categorize as horrible: on monday, this guy literally told me he wants me and the other guy who does the same job as me to split up our whole group into 2 teams and the teams would report to us. BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LIKE MANAGING PEOPLE. i envision it to be like picking teams for kickball and i feel terrible for the guys who get picked last. Edited by mehaner 2013-11-21 3:23 PM |

I swear, every time I fly, my colon fills with huge amounts of gas. I always thought it was the altitude. If you've ever driven from sea level to the mountains with any kind of plastic containers in the car, you know that the air expands SIGNIFICANTLY. We used to have bottles of shampoo and stuff explode in the trunk on the way to Colorado - and EVERYONE had massive gas the first few days we were there. I assume that's why it happens in an airplane as well? |

I also learned that the average is 10 farts per day. I have the feeling that's accurate. |

I can't wait til some of the 60+ year olds leave my industry so that opportunities open up for some people to move up that are more capable of managing people. I am finding a lot of places that people are put in as managers because they are good Engineers not because they are good managers. |

(maybe he was once, that wasn't fair of me!) Also agreeing over here. I work with our engineering organization a lot on communication and that combination is... challenging. For example. They all complained that no one communicates with them so we started an "Engineering Communication" email with items that pertained to them (training opportunities, surveys, team milestones, recognition, news clips, etc.). In some obscure conversation I had advised the team in charge, engineers, that 3 items per email was a good number (not too many that it gets skimmed/ignored, not too little that it doesn't justify sending the email). I got asked the other day to explain the rational for the "strict, 3-items-per-email" rule because the VP wanted to send out a super important item today and they only had one other item and it would be really nice if they could not have that rule binding them. I was like eh? Just send it if the VP is telling you to! I had to hold a meeting with them to explain that "3 items" was a guideline. Gotta love 'em. |

I was like eh? Just send it if the VP is telling you to! I had to hold a meeting with them to explain that "3 items" was a guideline. Gotta love 'em. I am not your typical Engineer but I get it. I get why they function like that. I even find it hard to work with my kind most of the time. I am data driven and I believe in qualifying and quantifying data. But I also don't have to play hardline in the rules like most of them do. I find 75% of Engineers can't make a damn decision but they can argue both sides of a problem and not come up with a conclusion. I am a bit more of a people person. I like being on the floor, hands on. Machining my own parts if I need to and running welders, programming a robot, designing process flows and pointing out wastes etc. I was running a Plant Matrix Meeting (action item list) because no one in Maint was organized here and everyone was complaining nothing was getting done. I created an action item list that became a public document so people could see. I did the same as you. Eng, Quality, Finance could add 3 items to the list at a time no more or the list becomes too big and overwhelming and no one wants to look at a list of 158 things to do. I had to fight with my own dept and Quality to maintain this 3ish guideline too. Since I gave notice my boss stopped the meetings and no we don't plan weekend work or downtime work. Last weekend they paid 8 skilled trades to stand around and nothing was worked on. No Plan, No work and then on Monday "Why didn't anything get done?" Edited by Techdiver 2013-11-22 9:17 AM |
