Friday is my recovery day so I enjoyed some Knob Creek bourbon after work while watching the world baseball classic. This morning was my usual ocean swim with SMOG. Saturday evening will be a 1hr ride/30 min run brick. Sunday an easy 1h30m ride. Enjoy the weekend everyone! -Matt |

Random question for everyone else -- how come no one responds to the RR itself (i.e. people respond in the mentor group, but not on the RR thread)? One of the cool things about RR's is that they're easy to find in the future....and sifting through years old mentor groups to see what people had to say about your race is not. I don't know if anyone else goes back and reads through old race reports, but I do so I don't make the same mistakes, and sometimes to remind myself that I'm capable of more than I thought....and as an added bonus, it's kinda cool to see what others said. Just a question I've wondered the same thing. I used to comment at the end of reports and then would post the same comment, or very similar, in the group thread so that's part of the reason I stopped I guess. I know I enjoy reading others comments as well and have gleaned some good information from both the RR and the comments. My last two races I didn't even fill out a RR - IMMT and Big George HIM - as I didn't think anyone really read them. They do take a while to write. Has anyone tried to print theirs off? I've not tried but thought it would be a good idea to add it to my folders of race information. If you do the same race again you can go back and see what you did before and remind yourself of things to do/not to do. (I'm one of those people who has a file folder for each race to include training I did, venue information, etc). |

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Andrew, EXCELLENT RR, I enjoyed reading it and memorized for next July - you describe extremely well the mental game of this long distance races and will take your advice in many of the steps. Thanks for taking the time to write and for sharing. I finally joined a cycling club and today did my first route with them: almost 100 cyclist in 3 levels -I started in the intermediate, and think will stay there-, we did 118 km in a sunny cold morning. The best of it is not only to ride along with others that do not talk about work -it's kind of a code, forbidden- but mainly security, there is car taking care of flat tires, traffic, round abouts.... hope to join them many times this year. Have you raced Challenge Wanaka in the past? It's one I'm sorta tossing around....not overly seriously, but kinda. Sounds like it's supposed to be a beautiful race, but it looks like it could be quite lonely, given the results I peeked at....not a huge number of participants. Hi Nicole, Yes, I did last years challenge wanaka half. Race report here if you want to read another novel: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Wanaka has a half distance and full distance, and individual and teams for both. So there are more out there than it seems from the results. But I think they only have 200 or so doing the full distance, and the numbers are declining, so I think it would be quite lonely, especially the 2nd lap of the run. There is a pretty good crowd does the half, and I believe the numbers are increasing for that distance. For what its worth I was never really on my own doing the half. It is an amazing venue for a triathlon tho. If you're planning to come all the way down I'd recommend it. If there's anything else you want to know let me know. |

Regular 1779 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Thank you everyone for the comments on my race report. Obviously it was a long day. But was immensely satisfying. And it's nice to know that my novel was appreciated. I've enjoyed a full week of no workouts resting up after the ironman, and am now ready to get back into some sort of training. As we've got the baby due at the end of June, I've promised no long distance triathlons next summer. So I'm going to be taking a bit of a step back from training, this was part of the deal the wife and I made when we decided I was going to try and do the ironman. We've also got quite a bit of work getting our house sorted before our new arrival. Our spare room needs to turn into a nursery, and my bike room is turning into a spare room. I've been downgraded to a bike cupboard! So for the next few months the plan is to focus on some weight loss and run 5 days a week. And do a ride one morning on the weekend if the weather agrees. Swimming is abandoned for the foreseeable future, it just takes too much extra time and effort getting to the pool compared to running. We have a local running series which is going to start for this year in a month, I'd like to lower my unimpressive 5k time before the baby arrives. Depending on how things go maybe I'll have a crack at a half marathon towards the end of the year. And next summer I'm hoping to do some, or all of the local sprint tri series. Something I can do without 6 hour training sessions *Edit to add more* And before I'm asked, No, I'm not cured of Ironman racing, I think there is definitely another one in my future. Not for a few years, and not at this level of fitness either. If/When I do another one it will be when I'm expecting to run the whole thing, and finish before it gets dark. I am cured of wanting to do an Ironman with a midnight finish. That just hurts too much for too long. I woke up with a sore throat and couldn't breathe well at first, but that seemed to get better as the swim went on. We did some really hard speed sets, then did a distance set. We ended with a TT in the 100 IM, which I enjoyed a lot b/c I love the IM. Remembering lately how much I used to love it b/c I love the variety. Swam a 1:25 I think. I just signed up for the next meet next weekend in Annapolis. Going to swim the 100 fr, 100 bk and 100 IM. Hopefully both the 200medley and 200 free relays as well. I have football right before so will be rushing to get to the meet (it starts at 4pm on Sunday). Hope everyone had a great weekend! |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Morning! 2600yds in the pool this morning with masters. Good workout. Last night I did the field lactate threshold test to set my HR zones for training. I was astounded to find the average for the main set 20' was exactly the same as a test I did in 2013 (last one I recorded on bt). I know I ran farther during that 20' than I did in 2013, but what does the same HR mean? Frustrated to feel like I've not improved much in the last four years right now. |

Those results are exactly what you should expect after a strong 4 years of training. For the most part (this is a BIG generalization), your LTHR won't change much, if at all, during the short-term. My bike LTHR has tested between 132-134 for the last six years, regardless of where I am fitness-wise. I would expect that number to drop a little as I age, but not over a short-term cycle.. The fact that you're running farther during that 20' indicates a higher fitness level. You're accomplishing more work with the same amount of heartbeats, which is likely a result of increased stroke volume, more efficient use of oxygen by your muscles, etc. |

Well you know I am - but I'm closer to the coast so looking at about half what you are for accumulation. I'm scheduled for a swim today and the Y is already closed so that's out. Too many plows and not enough sidewalks for a run to be safe... I think my workout is going to be snow removal. |

Yep - it's damn fast. I don't know what the slowest leg is - I would imagine the breast stroke but 1:24 is fast even if it's a 100 free. I've never swam that fast. I was thinking yesterday while I was swimming my slow 2:20's that I wish I could swim faster but without a master's group at my gym, I really don't have a way of making it happen except to do it more often. Lately, I've been swimming with peopoe like Nicole that just blow me out of the water and I feel bummed when I finish my workout because I just don't feel like I measure up. Maybe we could pay Nicole to come up from Baltimore and show us how it's done. We could pay her in beer! Like the football team which is better than the Ravens (it pained me to write that word) our beer is better too! |

DQ, you really think insulting my football team is going to make me want to come up and help you... That really does stink that you guys don't have a masters team around. I wonder if you would be able to find a coach and get one started maybe? It definitely has helped me exponentially in getting my speed up and motivating me to push harder each practice. DQ, I know what you mean about feeling really frustrated after swimming with people who are faster than you. When I was in one of the faster lanes and just getting started it was really upsetting to not be able to keep up. Keep working hard though and you will get faster! |

Was definitely fighting this off all weekend, but it has taken over and I haven't been sleeping well. I'm at home b/c of the snow, so hopefully will get a nap in and a good night's sleep tonight and will start to feel better tomorrow. Can't remember if I mentioned this, but I started juicing last week. Trying to have one each day to get lots of vitamins and minerals and such. Some of them are pretty delicious too. My favorite so far was yellow squash, celery, a pear and a carrot. I did not think I was going to like it but it was quite good. Excited to see how this effects me as I do it more. I definitely don't get enough fruits and veggies normally. Of course getting sick right after starting to do this makes me feel like it's not doing what I thought it would... |

Don't be disappointed that your HR was the same as it was in 2013....but be excited that you went further in the same amount of time at the same HR. In general, if your LTHR increases, it means one of a couple things. It could be that you didn't suffer sufficiently the previous time (very common with people who are new to endurance sports and go out way too hard initially, blow up, and then limp to the finish with a low HR, or you had something that was causing your HR to be suppressed (poor sleep, too much accumulated fatigue, etc.). |

There is a ton of good information and people are swimming faster (and maybe even more importantly, they're excited about swimming). Even if you don't have a masters group, you can still make improvements. |
