Another first timer here....

Did 16 miles in the dark last night. I need to get faster on the run, so my workouts can get shorter :-)

I don't calculate a thing. I eat a gel an hour or so on the bike, an uncrustable at some point, some cliff bars cut up, Babe Ruth bars and water and gatorade. that's it. so far, so good...on the run it's a gel every 5 or so miles, water and gatorade. Just re-found my love for sucking on jolly ranchers during long runs. never underestimate the yummyness of gum also. if it's really hot I'll take some electrolyte tabs. Gonna try out the chex mix this weekend. That sounded yummy!

Im really loving the use of the word "yummyness" in relation to food during an Ironman!! That will make me giggle through most of my run workout today

Is anyone else sick of the mental mastrubation of calculating how may calories how much fluid blah blah blah....I can't even rememebr how many electrolyte tablets I took because I'm so sick of all the calculations......If I were not so fussy about not eating the same thing over and over I guess it would be easier

Totally and completely sick of it.  I am looking forward to trying something different for Ironman Wisconsin.  Currently I do water at ten minutes, gatorade at 20 minutes, gel at 30 minutes, and repeat for the bike.  I then do the same on the run water at 1 mile, gatorade at 2 miles, gel at 3 miles, repeat.  That combination gives me essentially 300 calories an hour and I vary it a little depending on how badly I want to vomit!  Definitely going to try infinit next year.

Wow!! This is EXACTLY what I do and it took me a year to figure it out NO Infinit for me this year. Trying to live as much as possible off the course.

Well, I guess great minds think alike I developed this strategy because although I am bringing nutrition I wanted it to be the exact same thing I could find on the course "just in case". I can't seem to get any more calories down without feeling sick. Hopefully it all works out. Good luck, can't wait to see you at the start in 24 days 22 hours and 35 minutes!

Hi all,
I have been reading for a while your comments and questions to each other. I am completing my first IM at Florida this year. I appreciate being able to learn from all of you and wish each of you good luck.
I do have a question for some of you that have competed and completed this race previously. I am bringing with me my wife and child (6 months) and this is our vacation. I want this to be a vacation for them but we are focused on the race. Are the welcome dinner and awards dinner good and worth taking my family? My wife wants to experience it mostly because she has enjoyed all the people she has met that have been so nice since I have been in triathlon. I would appreciate knowing if these two dinners are worth the time away from my family or is it something that we should not miss and will enrich the experience, or skip it and go to the mandatory meeting only. Thanks.

I believe that the welcome dinner is family friendly and quite inspiring to see the pros, other athletes, those onstage etc. The awards dinner...sorry...I have never attended that one but I would recommend the Welcome Dinner...

IMFL will be my first full IM. I have completed 3 HIMs, Gulf Coast was my first, so the first 70.3 won't be a surprise. I also did Greenwood SC 70.3 and NOLA 70.3. They say to take your best HIM time, double it and add 1 hour and you will just about come up with your full IM time. My best time for 70.3 was 6:45, so anything around the 14 hour mark would be great for me. I am sure everyone else has much loftier goals, but I try to reasonable with myself and abilities.

First-timer here as well.  Did my 2nd HIM ever at the South Carolina Half 2 weeks ago, and PR'd by 30mins over my IM 70.3 NOLA time (with a time of 5:22:10).  Was definitely a confidence-builder.

Ready for Nov. 7th to get here already!!!

Cheers,
Mark

KathyG - 2009-10-08 2:17 PM Bring your own sunscreen too. Last year they ran out and had to scramble for more.

I plan on packing a continuous spray bottle in each of my T1 and T2 bags.  After I get done spraying myself, I'll just give it to the volunteers putting on the sunscreen.  Got mine at a discount store for 2.99...they were trying to get rid of their suntan lotions...end of season...

Of course 3 weeks prior to the race I get hurt. Anyone have success dealing with runner's knee? I would hate to not run between now and the race. Thinking of using kinesio tape, but open to suggestions.

Patella Femoral Syndrome?  That is what I was diagnosed with last week!

It feels like my knee is a rusty hinge when I run.  I have never had knee problems before and now this so close to the race.

My sports med doc has me on Voltraren anti inflamatory cream and pills, some days it works and some days not.  Also has me doing PT to strengthen the VMO or inner quad muscle as she feels that it is muscular imbalance that is causing the knee cap to misalign and rub.  I talked to a good sports med chiro last weekend at a race and he did say that he has had success with Kineso taping.  It has to be better than the stap brace that she gave me to wear as soon as I start sweating it slides out of place.

Any other ideas or experience I would love to hear too.
