idahodan - 2010-06-02 3:46 PM To those locals swimming out at Liberty Lake... where are you swimming at? I want to start hitting the open water but have never swam at Liberty Lake.

Unless you know someone with beach access (I don't have it) there are only two spots to get in.

1 - At the boat ramp.  I have never swam from here and I'm not sure if it is legal.  It is a small ramp area and if the weather is nice it can be busy.  Be very carefull getting in and out if you try this option.

2 - County Park Beach.  I have swam here a few times.  Easy wade in with small swimming area.  You can swim out past the ropes and follow the shore line.  Again, watch for boats in this area.

3 - Suck it up and go to CDA.  Better swim area and less boat problems.  I might try this option next week.

CDA it is... starting next week it's OWS for me unless the weather is super bad.

Hey T in Liberty Lake and Idahodan.  We swim out at Liberty every monday and wednesday at 5:30 if you ever want to join us.  We leave from a community beach at the northwest corner of lake and swim about a 1.6 mile loop.  There are usually quite a few people and everyone always says the more the merrier.  I wont be there next monday, but I will on Wed.

ballpark, how much do you think it would be to take a cab from Spokane Airport to Coeur d'Alene?

trying to figure if it is worth it to rent a car...

thoughts?  or I guess CAN you take a cab that far?

answered my own question.  was going to delete the post, but thought in case anyone else has the same question would post the answer here...

$45 via Payless Airport Shuttle ($45 for 1-2 people).  (found the answer on the Spokane Airport website: http://spokaneairports.net/gtrans.htm)

Is anyone really starting to struggle with the training load?  I just need to get through this weekend and then I will start tapering. I guess it's good that I feel like I'm getting my arse kicked this week- the timing should be perfect to peak on race day after tapering....I hope.

Would be cheaper to rent a car and split it a few ways- if you can find others who need a ride to CDA around the same time as you.  That would be the cheapest cab ride ever

was checking out the athletes signed up for this year and came across a name that seemed familar and the age and location was right so i sent him a facebook message and it turns out we went to elementary and high school together. His finishing time in another IM is near where i predict i should be so maybe i can have someone to talk to n the run.

I figure a 5-6 hour IM run time is plenty of time to catch up on the last 25 years of our lives.

What is the temp of the water now?  I know it can change a lot in 3 weeks, but just curious.  We have had two solid weeks of warm weather and the water in our lakes (KC) have warmed up pretty fast.

runnergirl - I can relate.  All last week, I felt like I was falling apart on every workout.  It reminds me of the rough patch that Jon said he was struggling with a while ago, just a lack of energy / general fatigue - and my volume was nowhere near his.  I just keep telling myself, the more I suffer now, the less I'll suffer on race day.  Hope that's true!

Are you feeling better this week then?

I just keep telling myself- I've torn my body down and the taper will build it back up even stronger.  I just need to make it through this weekend and I should start feeling better.  The first week of IM taper I'm just utterly exhausted.  The 2nd week I feel a little better- don't need as much sleep and my performance is better, and then the week of the race I usually cannot sleep because I have way to much nervous energy.  But having too much nervous energy is hard to imagine at this point!

Yeah, I'm with y'all. Last few weeks have been a real struggle. I seem to be mentally toast. My body is only keeping up slightly better than my mind. The workouts seem to go OK once I get started but getting started has been harder & harder lately. 105 bike tomorrow & 20ish run on Sunday will be last full dress rehearsal. Both workouts were cut a bit short last week due to time contraints (not that I needed much of an excuse) so we'll see how this weekend goes.

I hear these feelings are normal but this being my first IM, it has me doubting my ability. Regardless, I am ready to be done with this super long stuff, try and get some better rest during taper and then get this thing done. It has been a long strange road for sure.

It must be one hell of a rush for folks to sign up for this ordeal again and again. Wonder what % of folks do multiple IMs? Are majority of folks, one & done, or is it illness that is hard to kick?

I usually feel better after an easy or off day.  It's the back-to-back, cumulative effect that I think has been to blame for the decreased energy.  Either that, or poor nutrition.  I'm trying to avoid eating everything in site as I am not the smallest of guys.  Lately it seems I'm always tired and hungry, but I'm pretty sure that's to be expected.  Subsisting on bars and soup probably doesn't help.

I'm not planning on signing up for CDA again next year, but I'm hoping that I'm not one and done.  I love the lifestyle and the challenges that come with it.  I'm eying a late season IM (either Cozumel or Silverman) and I'd definitely like the privilege of participating in Kona someday.  I'm planning on traveling to Hawaii for the Honu 70.3 next year, so I'll have to think about which IM makes the most sense.  I'll always have the opportunity to sign up for CDA early next year as they offer domestic IM spots at Oceanside.

First things first tho...Gotta get through the first one.  I'm so looking forward to it!

If you guys are getting in 3000-4000 yard swims, 100 mile bike rides and any runs over 16 miles... you are gona be fine for the IM.  Yes all this fatigue and mental stress is "normal" and just matches what your body is going through.  The training will cary you through the event, just don't go out too fast and maintain pace... and don't screw up the hydration or the nutrition and the race will take care of itself.  It is a long day so if you get in a bad funk... just tough it out for a half hour and you will be back in the game (barring real issues that is).

The really fun thing is that after your first IM.... you don't feel as bad as you thought you would feel, so after a few days or a week you decide to go for a swim, bike or short run..... and after a 1-2 mile jog you are completely toast.  Don't plan on anything too strenuous for at least 3 weeks after the IM, even yardwork can be challenging.  Last year after the IM I dug a french drain through much rock.... wow!  It was very humbling.  First day was like 15 minutes of work and I was done.

Anyway, ya 2 more solid days of training and you can start to tick back and feel human again, until you feel like you have crazy energy and want the race to just start NOW!!!

Tomorrow for me is 30 min swim, 6:30 bike, 30-60 min run.  Should be pleasant..... I am already nearly falling asleep.

RE: Race day temperature.

Good question. Before I did CDA lastyear, I watched a couple of years and it seemed like it ranged from about 84-90 degrees. I think 4 or 5 years ago (others may know) it was 90-95. However, lastyear it was about 55 for the swim, 58 for the bike and 47 and pouring rain for the run....the fans hated it, but I loved it .

I'm predicting about 73 and partly cloudy this year.

Did a CompuTrainer multi-rider preview of one loop of the course today.  It was pretty tough!  I have the course at home and have never completed a full lap in one session.  I knew it would be slower than on the open road, but I was 3:10 for one loop - more than a half an hour slower than Oceanside.  My quads were toast when I was done.  They were that kind of sore like my calves used to get after a 20-miler or marathon.  Just a dull, aching pain that lasted for about 15 minutes.  I had no run in me off the bike.

I guess the trainer is tougher, since the wattage is constant and there's no coasting.  Still, I only averaged 17 mph, despite maintaining an average wattage of 176.  Whatever that means.

20-miler tomorrow after cheering on peeps at the SD Marathon. Woo.

And I saw somewhere that the temp is currently projected out at 75 for race day.  Hope there are a lot of 70+ degree days to heat up the lake.  I'm hoping for at least 57-degree water by race day.

Three weeks left and we'll be hunkerin down for a sleepless night in Idaho!

Race day temps can range from pretty chilly like last year (40's by early evening) to upper 90's (2003, 2006).  Usually though, it's going to be in the 70's to mid 80's.  Mornings are normally calm so the water (with one notable exception) is pretty smooth every year.  It's not unusual for the breeze to pick up in the early afternoon and it's normally from the south/southwest.  That translates to a tailwind going up Government Way and 4th Street but can be a sometimes difficult headwind the last 10 miles of each loop, coming back into town.  I'd give it a 60/40 chance most days of having at least some wind.

Don't stress about the water.  It's about 54 right now.  2 years ago it was 54 5 days before the race and still warmed up to almost 60 by race day.  We're forecasted to have some warmer days in the next week or so.  I'm guessing by next weekend it'll be 57-60 degrees and rising.  Not to worry!

It was a beautiful day here today.  Rode some of the course and there were lots of folks out for their last long ride before race day.  Good luck on all your training.  See you during race week.

Awesome and informative, thanks. I tell ya, my biggest weather fear is HEAT. Living/training in the Seattle area I think my warmest rides thus far have been about 65 degrees. If we have a day in the high 80's or 90's that will be a huge adjustment for me. My lake is about 57-59 degrees right now and that is totally manageable. I swim with a full suit and silicone cap (no booties, no gloves). There is some face pain for about 5 minutes, but then it's all fine after that.

Good luck on the last big workouts for those doing them! Mine were last week and this week it drops off a bit (only a 4-hour ride/1-hour run for my longer workout). I'm starting to feel like I'm ready to be done with this. It's good timing for things to drop back because my life is feeling borderline overwhelming at the moment!!

So what is up with it being only 63 degrees in CDA right now? I just biked 118 in 90 degree heat at high humidity, so I am praying for it to be as cold as possible at CDA since neither cold air nor cold water phase me

What is the race day temperature usually?

I could do with some cooler weather as well. Today was my last long workout and it was over 80 deg F at 6:30am with 90% relative Humidity. By the time I started my run it was 100 deg F.

I did CDA in 07 and 08, and the temp was perfect. It never got above 75 with scattered clouds throughout the day. It makes for a cool second run lap though.
