swishyskirt,

Thanks for posting those pictures.  They say a lot.

One thing I would like to point out.  IMLP is notorious for wet weather.  The transition bags will be placed there the day before.  My advice is place items like, socks, gloves, shirts, Garmins or what even you want to remind dry in zip lock bags then place them in the transition bags.  Same goes for the special needs bags.

One more thing to add to this.  Even though you drop off your transition bags & bike the day before the race, you can access everything race morning.  And x2 to the Zip-lock bags.  It may rain overnight as well as during the race.  Special needs you do not drop off until race morning.  It is down past the swim start.  I hung up my morning clothes bag with all my stuff in it, walked to SN to drop my bags with only my wetsuit, cap & goggles.  It was kind of a far walk on the road with bare feet.  This year I will either walk up & drop my SN bags before I put my shoes in my morning clothes bag, or I will buy a cheap pair of flip flops and ditch them at the swim start.

Thanks for the tip!

If you are an older women (race numbers go pros/Janus then youngest to oldest men then youngest to oldest women) your transition bags are often on the ground as they run out of racks for higher numbers so use ziplocks for sure.

On the subject of volunteering......beware of re-used sponges.

Last year I was working run station #1 and saw sponges being re-used all afternoon. People would take them out of their tri shorts and throw them on the ground and then the volunteers would pick them up off the street, put them in the ice bucket and just hand them out to the next racer. From time to time they supplemented with new, clean sponges too but there were an awful lot of dirty (but cold) sponges handed out that day.

If it is hot we will all want sponges.....I just wouldn't recommend squirting them into your mouth like I saw some people doing!

Just a word to the wise.....

I am now officially glad it rained in 2008 and we didn't need sponges. Thanks for the tip. The big question is.....are you spongeworthy?

OMG, that's sick.  I knew they were reused but i never thought twice about it.  My hands touched those sponges, then my hands grabbed ice out of a cup and put it in my mouth.

Who cares, IT'S IRONMAN you wusses! I've sucked on a sponge before and loved every "taste like a used jocjstrap" moment of it! HTFU applies to more than just training! Victory has it's costs.

I was volunteering out on River Road and we were instructed by the head manger of the aid station to bring the dirty sponges down to the river and soak them. So all of those people that were squeezing the water into their mouths were getting dirty sponges that were soaking in the river.... Yeah, I will not be using the sponges for drinking!

What Cusetri said goes even for a marathon. One year I was running NYC and in the Bronx got really hungry. I saw a guy on the sidelines eating an italian sub of some sort. I waddled over to him, took the sandwich, took a couple of bites, gave it back, and was on my way. Of course I would never try that in the Bronx on any other day other that Marathon day.

Stop fussing, Jen, the flaming diarrhea won't present itself until the next day as you bask in the glory of your IM finish.

I had zero GI issues the next day.  Not bad for post race beer & jambalaya!  Which was good b/c sitting down on a toilet was a bit of a challenge.

Bryan, you didn't exactly have many people in front of you using those sponges?  What were there, thirty or forty?
