Regular 57 Boulder, CO | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread IceManScott - 2011-08-24 1:07 PM lisac957 - 2011-08-24 1:58 PM I'm fairly certain there is also a time you have to pass through bike special needs (or start the 2nd loop). I saw someone last year as I was heading back onto the "stick" get stopped as she was just trying to start her 2nd loop. There is also a run cut off to start the 2nd loop but I don't know what that is; wish they would put those in the athlete guide, eh.
Here we go again. Is anyone certain about these mid-course cutoffs? Well, I emailed the WTC, and they forwarded my question to the race director (according to their email) and told me the mid-point cutoffs. And I posted what they told me here. There's been some skepticism about them, but here again is what they sent me about _intermediate_ cutoffs:
---------------------------------------- Thank you for your patience. I have copied the Race Director's response below. Bike course at the start of the second loop – 1:00pm approx. mile 55 *Anyone not meeting these cutoff will be officially removed from the race. They may take a sag back to the Monona Terrace or they may continue on their own but they are no longer an official participant. ----------------------------------------------------- Also note: I don't really know about the last part -- I think if you're cut late on the run they won't let you complete an IM. Someone from my training group (F4 in Boulder, CO) was also cut off at mile ~95 or so 3 years ago when he got back into Verona at the end of the 2nd loop of the bike. It looks like that wasn't one of the 'official' cutoff places, but maybe there was no earthly way to make it back to transition in time for him? Or maybe they had an additional cutoff at that point years ago... Edited by PrudenceR 2011-08-24 3:29 PM |

Looks the same route from '09 and if so, the course does go UP two (?) hills on Observatory. On the way back from the SS turnaround you bypass Observatory via the lakeshore path. If you look at the run course map, right where the little black arrow points to Babcock Drive, when you make that left turn onto Observatory you are at the bottom of the first hill. There is at least one more hill before you reach the top of Bascom Hill and take the windy road down past HB White library to Park street and then SS. I'm old and I'm 2230... |

Responding to my own response, but in the Athlete's Guide for this year, it says: --- Bike Cut-Off: The mid-point bike cut-off to start the --- So they gave me MISINFORMATION (around which I changed my whole bike strategy, but anyway...) and the mid-point cutoff is 1:30pm. |

Regular 57 Boulder, CO | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Oh, and because I feel bad for spreading misinformation about the cutoffs (very sorry, but they really did tell me those wrong times), the algorithm for assigning numbers appears to be women youngest-to-oldest, then men youngest-to-oldest. I assume the number has something to do with where your bike is and where bags are in transition?? |

How many 'big hills do you think there are? Is this a test? Now I admit that I may be suffering from some minor brain damage from Saturday, but if memory serves, Observatory has two 'big' hills. On the course elevation map these are the "goal posts" straddling the five and 18ish mile marks. |

Member 51 Cincinnati, OH | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread #1455 for me. It seems awfully real now. And I'm glad to hear the intermediate bike cutoff is 1:30pm instead of 1:00. Don't plan to be up against it, but good to know there's a little more breathing room. Agree that if I'm at mile 19 of the run at 10:30pm, they'll be doing me a favor puling me off the course!
