Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Asalzwed - 2013-01-07 1:57 PM Muskrat37 - 2013-01-07 3:48 PM Asalzwed - 2013-01-07 10:00 AM Alright guys I am about to drop a bomb on you guys. I have a decision to make in a couple weeks and I am extremely open to suggestions. I just don't know what I should do. I am halfway considering the Oly Nationals BUT I only want to go if I think I can be somewhat competitive and have a chance at finishing in the top 20. It appears (from last years results) that means approximately a 1:40 per hundred swim, 22 MPH bike, 43 minute 10K. Obviously these are ballpark numbers and due to the nature of triathlon there is some give and take with these numbers. Now, unfortunately I don't have a great indicator of exactly where I fall because my last and most competitive triathlon (sprint distance) I have done was with no bike training (other than riding to work) and about 4 weeks swimming (2 times per week) Also, it was a sprint. But, it's a place to start. My times were 1:59 per hundred m for the swim, 19.29 MPH for the bike course (hilly) and, well I think the run is not something I will worry about for now. Now IF I am going to do this, training needs to start right after Boston. I was thinking I could take a few weeks off running (which I will have to do anyway) and go straight to the pool. If I can get someone to help me with my stroke early on (Chad? I think in terms of biking I just need to do some longer sessions and work hard and pushing the pace every time I am out there. But I am not sure specifically how I will tackle this. The running will drop down in MPW but I would probably focus on more intensity. Other information you should know: If I start right after Boston I would have almost 4 months of training.
So, I don't know exactly what I am asking. I guess first off, how does this sound? Doable? What else should I keep in mind? Is my little roadie that doesn't really fit me very well (I am pretty sure) going to get me where I need to be? Should I invest in a proper fit even though I am quite certain it's too small for me? Most important, is this going to set me back in my long term running goals? I would be happy to help! I, of course, buy into the Manatee Mantra and say "DO EEEET!" I agree with Yanti, but want to interject a slightly different view point: (I created a spreadsheet to help understand my viewpoint) I had to convert your times to yards (it's how I think) - so your current swim time of 1:59 per 100 meters = 1:43 per 100 yard = 103 seconds.
The bottom row is what I would suggest as a goal. If we shot for the bottom # (1:35 per 100 yards) the difference in your performance on race day (from a 1:26 per 100 yards) would be 2 mins 24 seconds of swim time. I think you could more easily make that up on the bike - or by kicking a** in the run OR IN THE 2 TRANSITIONS. There is a pretty big difference in 1:35 and 1:26 per 100 in both swimming ability and energy output. I think you would have lot's of energy left at the 1:35 pace. You want to get almost 18% faster... IMO, that is a big goal in a short time. If a runner told you that they wanted to go from 8:00 miles to 6:34 (18% faster) per mile in only 4 months - what would you tell them? I am not trying to be a negative nancy here. I totally support you in your goals and if you want to work with me, I will do everything in my power to help you get there. (It will involve a lot of short intervals that you will either love or hate Well, I don't know if you are looking at the whole picture. Did you catch the part where I was only in the pool for 4 weeks before the race? I understand what you are saying and 1:40 was more of an ISH. It looks like there are some girls swimming 1:55 and even 2:05 so I was just picking a ballpark number. Yanti said she thinks I can get to a 1:50 pretty easily and I'll bet she has a pretty good grasp on what I am capable of. Also, I think the run analogy isn't quite right because swim is so technique heavy. Also, yes plenty of OWS time but I thought OW wasn't really something that a lot of people suggest spending a lot of time on? I thought pool time was more valuable. But anyway, we have from mid April to August 10, so even some nice weather. Last (sheesh this is out of control) I think you are right in that I can work on dropping my times in the bike and the run and even transition. And I plan on doing that, if I choose to commit to this.
*And crap, now I am not even sure if these results I am looking at are in meters or yards lol Too funny - 1:50 per 100 meters is actually the bottom # I was suggesting to shoot for. I sure hope you didn't take it as I was saying not to do it...definitely not the case. And you are totally right - Yanti would know better. I haven't met you or seen you swim or anything. As for the open water... My suggestion was that 1 OWS per week for your long swim would be ideal to help you hit your goals. This could be adjusted to one OWS every 10 days to 2 weeks. I hope you do decide to do it. I would love to help you - with Yanti's help as well. My apologies if I gave the wrong impression. * not sure why the chart above converted the number 17 to 1700 and 8 to 800. |

I'm not going to dazzle you with my swim skills haha, I just think I have a lot of improvement that can come just from technique. But maybe I am underestimating how long it takes to then implement those changes. Anyway, I might even start getting in the pool now just to re-accustom myself with the water and then down the road you and I can talk coaching and whatnot. |

But you are doing the right thing by listening and taking the time you need. As far as the sprint goes, meh they are a dime a dozen. Just find another when it works with your schedule. Depending on how you progress you can absolutely do the snowshoe walk. My friends are doing that and are good company Edited by Asalzwed 2013-01-07 5:37 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just finished up 10.1 miles in 1:23:07...felt pretty darn good. I was going to do my 8.4 mile route - then decided at the last second to add in the 1.4 miles to hit double digits today. This mean a 1350' drop @ 8% grade, followed by a flat then a 650' drop @ 8% grade. All fine and dandy until I had to turn around and run up them. Pretty sure I'm heading to the pool in a 1/2 hour. Can't wait to try a modified stroke!! All this swim talk has me so revved up to swim. |

Let us know how the modified stroke goes - remember in your mind aim wide and you'll end up just where you should be! I really concentrated on my stroke in the OWS last night - and remembered Coach Johnny's words - if it's choppy you got to be aggressive JoJo, don't be a victim! I still got turned over a couple of times but I channelled my inner 10 year old self and enjoyed the ride!
