Welp, there goes My grand ideas about waiting to speed up my training paces. Apparently my coach caught wind of my 5K over the weekend and bumped me to a faster group at practice. The workout was 5 x 1000 @ 3:45 (or 6:00 pace) it was so hard I could swear my inner ears were bleeding. These practices are so much harder than races. Its gotta be good for me though...

I broke out in sympathy sweat, side stitch and that nausea that you get when you push too hard just reading this. Sounds tough!

So I've heard Elesa, so I've heard

To be a little blunt and a little vulnerable, I think I do have some confidence issues when it comes to running these faster paces. I'll have to tackle this in another work your weakness session. I'm gonna need some more weeks.

All this talk lately has been way over my head, but I'm learning! Perhaps one day far from now I'll be able to apply some of these concepts. Weather hit the skids around here this week, so even though I want to be riding outside, the 17F temps in the morning are keeping me inside. Oh well, I'm keeping it in mind so when it does get warm for a day, I'll be out there.

I have my first race next week, the Turkey Trot, which I'm doing with my sister's entire family (husband and three kids, ages 17, 13, and 10). Because it is in a strange town for the kids, the adults are all paired with a kid. I've been buddied up with my 13yo neice who must be part gazelle. I'm admittedly a little petrefied by this, because she is fast. My sister says I just have to survive the first two miles, then she slows down. Gonna give it my best, but if you don't hear from me after next Wednesday, assume I died chasing a scrawny kid!

This is pretty exciting Gretchen!  We get to "be" with you for your first race--gives me goosebumps

Do you have a race plan?  What have you been doing for your run training?

Race plan?!?!
1.) Fall in behind that 13 year old and hang on for dear life!
2.) Try not to vomit
3.) Finish

How's that for a race plan?

Okay, in all seriousness, I haven't thought about it too much because I've really been thinking I'm just going to treat it like any other training day (plan calls for run on Thursdays anyway), but with an extra 600 people hanging around. I don't even have a goal time because I think there are going to be a lot of walkers and a lot of kids and such, neither of which are particularly good for keeping a solid race pace.

As for training, I'm following my plan (12 wk sprint-intermediate from BT). So far it has been lots of relatively short, slow runs, but today was a 40 min run with a 30min TT, so it is getting more intense. Next Thursday calls for 1:05, but I'm hoping to finish my 5K faster than that!

Yeah, I think this is fantastic Gretchen. I love when the whole family gets out to do this kind of thing.

Also to continue the redundance, lol, tell us about your training.

hi all, I'm going to have to bow out of this 2 week challenge for medical, non sports related reasons. I'm really inspired by it though, so you can bet I'll be back for the next round!!

Yeah, that sounds good.  Actually, it sounds a lot like Salty's race plans, except that she sometimes tells an 18 year old to tuck in behind her.  lol.

Gretchen, this s ounds like the perfect kind of event for a first race--and on THANKSGIVING of all days.  Perfect :)  I hope you'll give us a nice full RR.

I think I'm getting close to resuming my speedwork.  I've had no pain with a five mile run on Tuesday and another five yesterday.  I'll wait until next week to do an easy R-workout and go from there.  I had a 5k planned for Saturday but will do it with my son and maybe do a real 5k the following week.  I am working on some leg stretching and strengthening exercises to try to prevent this in the future.  I'm also going to keep with one quality session a week for a few months.  Going almost directly to two sessions and a couple three a weeks was too much too soon.  As Dale pointed out I also need to consider my bike volume in overall weekly workloads and increases of such.  I can't believe how much I've learned this Fall and look forward to what's ahead.

I wonder if you would benefit more from just lots of easy running?

It seems like an "easy" R workout might defeat the purpose of the R workout vs just getting some lower impact easy running volume in?

Just a thought.

By easy I mean I will go back to lower volumes for the workout but will keep the same paces I had been working per the charts.  Maybe a "cautious" R workout would be a better word.  I do want to continue with these as I have felt a significant benefit to my economy from these workouts.  Plus they are a lot of fun.

Mmm kind of a long story but the summary is that I was STARVING but had to do a long run (I was traveling at the time) and had no food options. I was downtown Portland and needed something fast. A long run on a empty stomach would just not work so it was the best of the two options. I know you are wondering ... yes I had sauce but it become cumbersome so I ditched it.

X2...between this challenge and Switch's book club challenges I think I kinda sorta maybe know what I'm doing now.  Whether that's true or not TBD!!

10K race this weekend for me...first one since April 2011.  My VDOT says about a 47:10 finish but I don't think I have the experience racing that distance to really nail it.  I'm going to treat it like a longer version of my five-miler:  2 miles @ M, 3 @ T, then kick the last 1.2. and see what I have left.  It's a hilly course so pacing is going to be interesting, but I run this course, or parts of it quite often so my Strava runs give me a decent GAP (grade-adjusted pace for you non-Strava addicts out there).  Weather is supposed to be in the 20s and a little breezy...brrrrrr!!!

Still working several weaknesses.  Running base, check, but backed off a bit the last two weeks because my feet have been a little sore (I don't think it's anything to worry about).  Flexibility, check, three more Bikram sessions this week.  Actually had a breakthrough in class where I got the top of my ankle flat on the floor while sitting on my feet.  I actually think that's why my feet hurt a little..they're wigging out at their new-found flexibility.  And I got my butt back in the pool this week.

I'm so happy to hear that you guys are learning a lot this fall--i mean, I'm glad I'm not the only one.  It has been really fun to be doing this with a group, and I like how large chunks of our groups have moved through the books or challenges together. *sniff* Love you guys :)

Good luck on the race this weekend!  Sounds like a good plan. Do you have a good warm up routine?

And exciting new ankle flexibility!  That will help you in the pool (so they tell me, anyway) ;P

I've also learned a ton! It's really nice being able to bounce some ideas off of people as there is no 1 cut and dry way to do -well - nearly anything!

Awesome, Mike! Have a great race. I am looking forward to hearing about it! Use the downhills to recover, don't resist gravity (don't land on your heels) and stay steady on the uphill.

I'm still steadily working on my running weakness -- running 5x a week and doing some bodyweight strenth training 3x a week (and foam rolling pretty much daily). I feel like I'm making some progress, and that makes me very happy. I'll be doing a Turkey Trot 5k next week.....not expecting a PR, but looking forward to getting a post-accident baseline from which to gauge progress.

Also, if anyone's interested, I posted my RR from the Ragnar Trail Relay last weekend: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

5x running per week and not having any issues post-Ragnar seem like major improvements.  Very cool, Nicole.

Has this thread really gone a whole 24 hours with no posts?  WTH? :)

Update on my weaknesses.

I called my ortho guy last Friday to schedule an MRI.  Nurse got back to me on Tuesday (awesome, btw), but over the weekend and this week my leg thing seems to have improved quite a bit.  So now there this order in for me to get an MRI, but I don't know if I should pull the trigger or just wait another week.  Admittedly, I haven't been running much, but plan to get some mile this weekend and will reassess.  I really think the strength work and rolling has helped a ton. And of course, as soon as I decided I was going to get an MRI, things start to get better--that's murphy's law, right?

Water is going better.  It always does if I make a concious effort to stay on top of it.  It should be a no brainer at this point.  Jeesh.

Out of the last five nights, I'd say 4 were g2g food wise. I'm doing better overall with not going buckwild at night, bigger breakfasts, and bringing lunches. I've also tried to make sure I have a two beer limit.  3 beers and my resolve is nowhere to be found.

I hope our racers have great races and everyone else has good long runs and other training.  Have a great weekend :)

There's a local duathlon here that I decided to race tomorrow for fun (5k run /9mile bike/1 mile run).  Sunday I have my 18 miler that I may have a group forming for to keep me motivated.

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

One year ago I weighed 238 lbs. and got winded walking up one flight of stairs - literally. I ran across a brochure for a triathlon...hmm. It seemed like an impossible task, but I was intrigued.

So how do you turn a weakness into strength? It begins with effecting a fundamental change to your triathlete self-image.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
