I'm pleased to report the road trip went as well as 10.5 hours of driving can yesterday and I'm so so so happy to be in Arizona!!! The weather is gorgeous! Driving past TTL last night gave me a little pang of anxiety - suddenly it all seems a bit more real LOL

My coach has me planned to ride 2 loops of the course this weekend. It sounds like the bike lane is shot to hell and I should avoid this. Are there any other good local routes that simulate the flat/climb of the race course well? The goal is to sorta nail down my pacing/watts for race day. Thanks!

First of all welcome! I'll be out there Saturday morning. No, the bike lane is ok, just bring extra tubes in case it still has some debris in it. Ride it. I'll be on the red Orbea Ordu.

Cool, thanks! I'll pick a few more up at Triple Sports tomorrow. And LOL - I will be on a red Orbea also Not sure if I'll make it out first thing in the morning though - I entered the dogs in an agility trial in Tempe Fri/Sat so I may hit that first - but I'll keep my eyes open for ya!

That's so cool! My dogs aren't very agile, they are more klutzy (2 Golden's). I'll be out there between 6:30-11:30 am.

LOL! My poor dogs feel deprived in that their competition schedule has been cut way back due to my training this year, so I figured the least I could do was enter them in something during the taper when time isn't as much of a factor.

The Cynosport World Games are actually at Westworld next week Wed-Sun - we usually compete but I knew that would be too much this year 1 week before IM. Will just have to go by and watch!

Have a good ride, I'll look for you!

I'll be driving down from Northern CA on Thursday before the race.  Nice to know that it will take the 10.5 hours I expected.  Let us know how cold the TTL water is.  I looked at the historic record and it can be anywhere between 59 and 70 degrees.  I am hoping it will be at least 63.

Today was a big confidence booster.  I did a fairly fast (for me) 2 mile swim followed immediately by a 12 mile run.  I was hit by a car almost three months ago and the resulting back injury was my biggest concern.  It really limited swimming but, today, I proved I can do it.  Yes, it will hurt a bit but, I can do it. The seven weeks of very little training will take a toll on my expected time but, I will not let it take away the thrill of being in an Ironman.  See you there!

Great job on your swim/run! I drive back and forth from the bay area about 3 times a year and average 10-11 hours. The biggest influence is making sure you don't hit LA during rush hour (or anything close to it!). Otherwise that estimate changes dramatically I hit western outskirts of the Phoenix area at about 5:30 last night and had no traffic slowdown until Loop 202 (which had an accident/stalled car and construction).

Several of us will be doing an OWS in the lake this Sunday... we'll let you know how chilly the water is!

Ive been swimming in chilly lakes to prepare, but I wonder if my lakes in North Ga are cold enough. I'd like to know if you think we need neoprene caps under the latex.

My understanding from the race packet is that they don't allow neoprene footsies. Anybody believe this to be accurate too?

No booties allowed. It won't be below 60, gang. It's been warm here this week and temps should be average for the next 2 weeks, so plan on mid 60's for the swim.

You can track the lake temp here:

Killed my T2 brick this morning! Did my best to beat up my legs on the bike, but I'm unstoppable!  22 miles in an hour on the bike then averaged 6:41s over 18 miles on the run!

The best part is rest day tomorrow, 3hr ride saturday, rest day sunday AND monday.

Outstanding effort!  I can sympathize with your derailed training.  Due to a bike crash, I missed 7 long weeks of training due to recovery and a few shoulder surgeries, the last one on Friday.  The way I look at is this week will be my base, next week build, then peak/taper   We'll see what happens but at least we'll be there!

Wow rotordean!  I am impressed with your ability to recover.  Hope the next couple of weeks go well for you too.  This is also my build week.  I am only going to taper for about a week.  I hope that is enough to recover from these last few tough workouts.

I hate going in not being in peak shape but, you can only do what you can do.  We may surprise ourselves on how well it goes come race day.  I am simply thrilled at avoiding the DNS.

Destroyer is a very bad man.

Im always impressed by the folks like jjohn, dean, etc that battle injuries, illness, etc. Im a sucker for that. I have a friend who did augusta 70.3 while getting chemo for ovarian cancer. now thats tough. im just doing an ironman. not fighting friggin cancer. give you some perspective.

I went to BikeSport Houston today at lunch to get a new chain, tubes and C02. While there I was chatting with the owner, Jeff about my wheels. Since my (carbon) rear race wheel cracked a few months ago, I have had to use some others that I had in the garage. The garage wheels are Shimano R650's, good, strong, easy spinning and true wheels. Nothing wrong with them. I also have a set of OLD Rolf Vector Comps that I was considering using. So I asked Jeff what would be a better wheel to use at IMAZ and he said neither and told me that I should use a set of Zipp 404's instead. I told him my IM budget was already spent.....so he said he was not trying to sell me wheels, but he has a set of 404's that he wants me to use!!! For FREE!!! He remembers my DNF at IMAZ 08. How could I refuse? He said that when I drop my bike off there for Tribike Transport that I should bring it a day early and he will put them on and get them all set up.

Sooooo, I will be sporting a set of Zipp 404's at IMAZ.

Jeff's generosity is overwhelming to me.

Somewhat OT:

In case you didn't know, those were TexasMPGal's fine Soldiers (military policeman) securing Fort Hood yesterday after that douchebag started killing people.

As usual, she's taking care of business like a professional - just off the plane from her Soldier's funeral.

Go send her some love.

Now that most of us are heading into taper I have a question.  What training plan did you use? What did you like about it? Any dislikes? Would you use the plan again?

I'm using a plan through Multisports.com. It's a 24 week plan that follows a pattern of 2 week build and 1 week recovery. The plan is bike and run heavy but more swims are workable into the program.

I like the plan because there are "required" workouts and optional workouts allowing you to customize the volume to your needs. The plan comes with an online Q&A with the coaches regarding all aspects of IM training and race prep.

The only thing I dislike about the program is that it is not customized specifically to my needs.

Ya know, there is still good. This guy is just one of those people that is just a nice guy. His shop is a sponser for our tri club, when we do training rides, he drives the course the whole time to make sure we are all ok and accounted for.
