Master 1591![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() San Diego, CA | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!gavisk - 2010-01-07 9:08 PM I'll ride to work in the really cold (like this morning), but it's a short ride, so I just wear longjohns under khakis, a fleece jacket and a shell over that, good warm hat under my helmet, and ski gloves. If it's snowing, I'll wear ski goggles. By the time I've covered the three miles there, even at near-zero degree temps, I'm sweating. Except for my feet, which are like blocks of ice. But on a day like today I wouldn't even consider a training ride. Those are strictly for 20 plus degree days. On those days I'll wear a medium weight bottom layer under windproof-front bib tights (I like the way bibs make my lower back feel warmer) and a heavyweight, long-sleeve, full-zip jersey that's really more like a jacket with back pockets (again, windproof front). Down around 20 I'll wear ski gloves, but above 30 I wear neoprene winter cycling gloves. Cheap neoprene over-booties I bought at Performance, and fairly thin Smartwool socks. This may not seem like much clothing, but we have almost no humidity here, so 20 degrees just doesn't feel that cold. The most expensive item was the jersey/jacket, but it has a fairly wide temperature range. I've worn it comfortably over a synthetic t-shirt on 50 degree days. I generally don't like anything on my face, but if it's down around 20 I'll sometimes wear a neck gaiter that I can pull up if my face gets really cold. You don't have to spend a ton of money to keep warm, you just have to make sure that what you do buy has that front layer of windproof material. I got my bibs, jacket, and underlayers at >50% off from Steepandcheap and Bonktown. , Trin2bfast - 2010-01-07 10:21 AM JP & Thomas...and the other cold weather riders out there. Do you wear face coverings, full shoe covers, leg warmers or full pants/tights, and what kind of gloves? (sorry multiple questions in one) But seriously, I have worn layeou rs for cold rides... and face, ears, hand & feet freeze the F' off even with gear on. Granted I am not a 'cold weather' guy like some of you northerners or transplanted northerners... just curious. I don't want to drop several hundred bucks on cold weather gear that I would only use a few times a year. More worthwhile to me to invest in a trainer. Or you could spend a ton of money and move to San Diego where it's been 70 during the day and a chilly 50 at night. Yes ... feel free to flog me as necessary. I'm a little chilly, I think I may go put on a sweater On a serious note I like something to cover my face when it's really cold. I also try to layer with a wicking fabric next to the skin followed by something windbreaking. Sweating with no wind protection can be really brutal. |

Won't attempt to comment on any of them, but did have a moments pause thinking about the upside of peeing standing up. Meetings were on 57th and 5th. How convenient. Am thinking about switching to a Mac. Bergdorfs is across the street but I'm hanging in the Apple store over lunch. That is a dangerous intersection. Bling galore... We're a mac family, the only problem is a lot of software doesn't work properly on mac's (ie i can't get my garmin, computrainer and printer/scanner software to work properly on it, other people may have better luck). So my work computer (pc) is also my workout tracking pc. Mac is great great for everything else. |

Triathlete Nation ~ Texas! | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!I'm a loooober! If I plan a ride of 1hr+ in the saddle, chamois cream is applied (indoor or out). The drainer can be tough mentally... just try and keep your focus up ~ and try not to simply zone out. Doing the intervals or specific workouts will prevent you from just mind-numbingly pedal at a set pace, which is probably not benefitting your fitness any. Low impact (like the eliptical) may help keep your general fitness up some without further irritating your IT/knee issue. Stretching in the ballet class thing doesn't sound like a bad plan either. Treadmill is a good (lower impact than the street) environment to test the run... just don't push too far or too fast. Good luck. KeriKadi - 2010-01-07 9:44 PM Question for the folks that use an indoor trainer - ummm do you bother to lube? Until tonight my rides had been short but I gotta say about 45 minutes into this ride I was wishing for some glide. I will try to think ahead next time. I also noticed my brain is mush on the trainer. While watching Biggest Loser the other night on the trainer I wasn't able to remember any contestants names and tonight I had a hard time keeping track of who had the ball. In my defense I am not much of a college ball fan but still. So here's the plan - tomorrow while the girls are in PE I plan to give the elipitcal a try and hope my ITB doesn't start screaming at me. They actually have a really good ballet tone class with lots of stretching so I'll do that after. If all goes well on the elipitcal I'll give the treadmill a shot Saturday and maybe, just maybe I'll try to run outside for a short run Sunday. What say you MG? Sound like a plan? I am open to suggestions. I am balancing between off my ITB and feeling remotely ready for this half. |

I got my bibs, jacket, and underlayers at >50% off from Steepandcheap and Bonktown. Thanks, I wil check those places out... both Online I presume? I've heard about bonktown, didn't know about the other. |

Triathlete Nation ~ Texas! | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!jezzieswims - Or you could spend a ton of money and move to San Diego where it's been 70 during the day and a chilly 50 at night. Yes ... feel free to flog me as necessary. I'm a little chilly, I think I may go put on a sweater And they have In-N-Out Burger!... However, I'll take the cold, the heat, and hurricanes... you keep the Earthquakes! Been through a few (a 7.0 & 6.8 in the Hi-Desert & Palm Springs area)...Nope, you can have it! No warning, just shake your fillings loose! But a double-double, with cheese... like heaven! |
