Hey guys, here is my Race Report

I lost it the first time, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

There is a huge windstorm hitting here. The boat is a little ...turbulent. Not seasick yet (I'm visiting my parents and they live on a houseboat on the river)

That's awesome!

ETA: Would you mind expanding on your comment about how running faster on the downhill affects you later? I've always just "let it go" on downhills because it's easy speed. Is this hurting my run later?

Sure, as I mentioned you can "let it go" and not resist the downhill and take advanage but it's easy to get caught up and simply go too fast. It's ok to be a little quicker than your projected pace but there is such thing as too fast and just like any time you get off pace too much, you pay for it later.

Maybe I am not explaining it well...

I'm sure most people understand I just have a hightened interest in hills

A specific thing to think about (and this is not the only thing) is that running is a series of falls and recoveries. When  you are going downhill, that "fall" is even more impactful. Your muscles have to absorb more shock.

Also many people tend to override downhill, causing more stress of your body.

When running downhill it is important to stay relaxed and try not to over-stride. Keep your steps close to the ground, not bringing your knees up too high. Our coach has us focus on bringing our arms down with our hands more near our hips. This helps keep your knees from coming up. It's something you absolutely need to practice, too.

Yes, falling farther and overstriding tends to happen more easily. I also try to keep a light quick step, keeping cadence up to help keep from that tendency to bound more.

Very helpful - I'm going to try the arm low thing, as better than half of my runs are hill runs (not by design, just by living in Hill Country - yes, that's a thing).

I also try to keep a slightly higher cadence to avoid the overstriding.

On my last HM, the final .75 miles were downhill and I knew I had a shot at a 1:33:xx if I hustled.  So, despite it not being an A race (and boy did I pay a couple weeks later for this!), I huffed down that hill.

The pounding was bad, as I was definitely overstriding.  I was just too tired to run fast but with good form down that last hill - an unsmart move.  Perhaps if I'd practiced more downhill form (which I have been doing since, quite mindfully), I'd have felt better after!

Just a heads up that downhills later in a race can feel a whole lot different than a downhill at the start...

Matt

I love matt and kim. Kim's drumming cracks me up

Awwww shucks...  .  We think you're great, too.

Yes, we also love (the other) Matt & Kim - wish we could play like them!  I liked the dumpster part where you could just their heads and Kim's drumsticks.  Although The Better Half Kim cracks me up, her drumming needs some work...

It's so cool you were able to go see him play and to keep in touch with him in general.

He said we should try to join another billet program because we are good at it

His college teammates were asking him who we were. We were pretty loud

He had two Williston Hockey tech t-shirts with him. He gave one to me <3 and had his teammates sign the other and gave it to the budding-hockey-player nephew that we brought to the game

How sweet!  What a testament to your "mom-ing" skills.   Sounds like a good kid too.  I'm guessing you'll be staying in touch with him for awhile.  Any plans to take on a new kid?

Some first world problems today.  My swim was - gasp - without tunes, as my underwater earbuds packed it in.

Then, running from work at lunch I realized that in my rush to get TWO bags of stuff together this morning (pool, then work, then run, then work some more... and some more... and even now... - so, two bags), I realized that I forgot both underwear and socks.

So, a commando running tights run and a blistered toe later, I'm wondering why I don't try to get more sleep.

That is all.  Funny how things like that seem like a problem until you realize that you can swim at a pool and run during your lunch time.  The world is actually pretty good to me (at the moment, so THANK YOU WORLD... lest I jinx myself).

And me!!   See what you started, Matt?!

On a similar note, I went swimming today at 6 a.m. (2,000 yds. for the 1st time AND I got up at ridiculous:30 to do it!!) and put my wallet in my swim bag.  It didn't make it back into my purse when I went home to change and now I have no wallet to buy lunch.  Guess I'll have to survive on the instant oatmeal I keep at the office.  Sigh....

Not sure if they do and my brain is too fried to figure out how to do it.  I usually exercise in the evenings and I'm wiped out.  Luckily our office party is today so it's a short day.

Manatees, I'm having a motivation problem.  My coach gives me 2 strength workouts a week that are about 30-40 min. each.  I find myself dreading them and look for any possible excuse to skip.  I know that they'll help me in the long run but that isn't enough to push me to do the work.  Any suggestions for how I can motivate myself to do these regularly like I'm supposed to?  I've asked my coach, but figured I'd ask y'all too.

GOOOOOOOOOOOO racers!!

DL'ers, good to see that there's lots of healing going on.  Keep up the good work.

Don't like seeing that the DL is so much longer than the racer list, though, so maybe heal faster??

To be completely honest...strength workout can be a nice supplement but if you don't enjoy it and aren't motivated I would probably do more S, B or R.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
