Nooooo ... not the Pop Tarts ... oh, the humanity!!!

You are AWESOME. 80lb 10in over 2 years is amazing. That's the result but the real congrats is for all the continuing consistent mindful work you put into it.

Yah ... I broke the hospital's treadmill (just WALKING!) during a cardiac stress test WHILE I HAD PNEUMONIA and then the nutritionist said I needed to lose weight and exercise more. And no coffee. Unfortunately, I laughed in her face. Then hocked up a really nice loogie.

Ha ha ha, that comment sounds very familiar...

But who cares what she says?  You've done yourself a great service by losing a lot of weight and getting on a good exercise program despite what she may think.  Keep rockin' your bad self!

Wow, that really sucks.  Sorry for any and all manatees affected by the shutdown.  Thankfully there is little to no impact on me directly but the studies I work for are somewhat affected because of the overseeing bodies not working - NIH, NIDDK, and some of the labs.

TJ, I am very sorry to hear about your situation.  Jeez...

Well, according to a certain someone in PCoJ there is no situation. It's all made up and imaginary. All the feds are out drinking and partying.

Quite frankly our family will be fine. It is a bit nerve-racking not knowing when the next paycheck will come in but we'll do ok. I work with a lady who is a secretary, GS-5-ish (low wage), single income family, who was just starting to recover from our furloughs this summer. Today she was sent home not knowing when she'll be paid again. It sux.

I heard on the radio this morning that members of the House and Senate are still getting paid (all together) something like $10,000 an hour at the expense of taxpayers.  Constitutionally they cannot stop being paid or adjust their own wages.  Supposedly some of them are saying they will donate all their pay during the shutdown to charity.  Cuh-razy when you think of the secretary you work with at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Hey Gang,

I have a couple of questions.

1) How do you put the list of Manatees with the links on the front of your training log.  Many of you have this, and I would like to follow suit.

2) I would love to know what everyone's plans/goals are going into the off-season.  Some people have goals listed in the from part of their logs, but it would be nice to hear what people are reaching towards these days, if you don't mind sharing :)

Y'all's off season is sort of the beginning of my season. My goals are strength focused running then ramping into more endurance focus (then marathon training.) I will be working on nutrition/managing racing weight and supplemental strength. Additionally managing my time so my career and family/friends hardly notice the training

2) I don't know for sure. I have a few running races that I am working towards, but no real GOALS. I have the same fuzzy objectives of running faster, swimming faster/more, blah, blah, blah.

Wait, mine is actually to build a bike this winter. I have a Trek 1200 that I dated to the early 90's on a rack right now in my garage. It will re-emerge as a single speed. I am going to tear down, sand/paint, add new parts, and hopefully finish up with a serviceable single speed for training. The true reason for the build is education, I am sketchy on bottom brackets and a couple of other items.  Long range, I hope to build a tri-bike at some point.

I like the bike idea Chris. That is sooooo cool!!!!!!!! We want in-progress pix!!!!

As for goals... my main focus has been RnR Denver which is in 2.5 weeks! After that... ? I'd like to keep the run focus but, like Chris, my goals are of the "get faster" sort. I'd like to find another HM to do this winter. I don't want to give up my bike fitness though so I'll probably pull out the drainer when the days get too short. I'm eyeing a June HIM in Steamboat Springs, CO. DH says do it. Entry fee is only $150 until the end of the year!

Oh! I am a smidge over 12 miles from running 500 miles this year! So I'll probably hit it during my long run this weekend. It took me all of 2012 to hit that number! Woohoo!

1) Yeah, Janyne rocks.  I just told her that earlier this morning

2)

  • Improve my swimming; hoping the masters program I'm doing will help with that.
  • If it isn't too taxing on my brain/schedule/wallet, I may see a guy about learning to run better.
  • Try to bike outside most weekends (could be tough with hockey).  Otherwise, time on the trainer periodically.
  • Dump some plump
  • Take part in the other sports I enjoy that take a bit of a backseat to tri: Tae Kwon Do and of course it is now ice hockey season!
  • Scatter a few running races throughout the winter just to have fun.  Wait, that's really the only reason I do any of this stuff!

My "A" race is November 10th.  After it I will re-evaluate, but will probably be more run focused.  I am planning a February 25k trail race and before that may do a December HM.  In March I may start a get faster program for all 3 sports, but we'll see.

What are your plans?

ETA:  i will also probably start back with TRX.

I am looking forward to being done with marathon training.....it has been a revelation of experiences some which I would rather forget.....Off season?  I want to get back in the gym and strength train regularly.  It's going to hurt but I am too fluffy.  I also want to do the winter bike plan again--too much tome off my bike this year I feel like I have lost any bike fitness I had.  Rebuild my run speed cause I miss that.....and get my butt handed to me in the pool.

1) Definitely copy & paste Janyne's - she's awesome about keeping everything correct and up to date for us Manatees!

2)

  • I'll be keeping my sessions with JTTD, as well as adding a weekly class that he teaches for a core group of long distance triathlon peoples that will be a mix of strength/intensity/cross-training/crossfit stuff but also make it kind of competitive within the class.
  • as running is BY FAR my weakest out of the three, I'd like to sign up for some races over the winter to make sure that I don't get all lax about running and then have to start from scratch (again) when trying to ramp up for next season
  • keep swimming and maybe start going to the masters sessions at the gym
  • bike when I can, but NO MORE 6 hour sessions on the drainer!
  • try not to gain too much fluff once B2B is over... most likely easier said than done with that last one...

I think if you keep up a good training volume between now and then you'll be fine. Dooooo eeeeet!

How do you feel in terms of recovery as well as your injuries?

That's not that crazy, assuming you recover well and are in good health and I hate the "dooo eeeet" stuff.  It gives you a little less than a month to keep your volume up and then taper down again.
