jford2309 - 2013-03-18 10:17 AM I thought it was disrespectful to use a B52 that was shot down where Americans most likely died as a pit stop for a reality show...

I could see that.  But I think really this show has a neutral take and they were just trying to show a culture that is different than ours.  I mean, the whole "communism propaganda" could be considered inappropriate too.  I viewed the entire episode more from an educational standpoint.

But would you have a problem if it was Normandy?

Or is Vietnam just too recent?

I think you hit the nail on the head, Jen - Vietnam is in my own personal memory, so much more 'real' than Normandy would be.

But also, I am fairly emotionally sensitive, and driving by a car crushed from an accident gives me the same feeling as that crushed plane does. I often cry, or at least feel like it, in those situations.

e.t.a. - I don't think the show has any political take at all - I agree with you on that. Heck, Phil is a multicultural/national all by himself!

Too recent? Very possibly could be the reason. My FIL lost both legs are an arm in Vietnam, so I am sure that has jaded me some. As far as Normandy goes...I would hate to see something as trivial as a game show use any type of memorial to fallen soldiers as a part of the game, just seems disrespectful to me. It could be any country also.

Maybe the celebration of communism and the B-52 memorial combination just seemed to much together and I thought it was disrespectful.

Chuck and Wynona got lucky that the father and son had to bail....I think their time is limited.  They are too consistently near the back of the pack to survive much longer I think...she should have done that roadblock though...he's been doing them all and I don't think that is allowed!  At some point she needs to do a roadblock.

Not much else to say about this episode I guess....

She did on the first episode when she was searching for something buried in the sand on the beach complaining about wanting a Vodka and Sprite or something.

Sad to see the father and son pull the plug last night but you have to take care of yourself and with an injury like that how long can you really last?  Hopefully his leg is healed up and riding again.

Yeah, the combo might have been over the top.  I don't see using a landmark...any landmark...as disrespectful in a game sense.  Maybe I'm just different though.  I mean, if they had them search out a specific name on a headstone in Normandy I would consider that disrespectful.  But if they said "drive yourself to the memorial on Omaha beach" I would say that's just using a land mark to as a destination and OK.  I mean, many of the places they go on this show are significant cultural or memorial spots in various countries.  It wouldn't be nearly as educational/interesting if they just gave them the address of a store front all the time, right?

BTW, at some point during the show it definitely occurred to me that they were in NORTH Vietnam.  Hanoi.  For crying out loud...how many times have I heard/read stories about the Hanoi Hilton, etc.  It's pretty weird to think that this is a country we were at war with only 40 years ago.  I'd hesitate to ever go there as a "American tourist".  I would think there would still be a lot of ill will.  Sorta like how Americans felt about Germany and Japan for a good 20-30 years after WWII....maybe time does eventually heal all wounds....

The first episode had two road blocks and the second said it had to be done by the member of the team that hadn't done the first one...

x2

The detours & roadblocks during the race are directly related to the culture of the country/city they are in at the time.

Instead of the B-52 site, what if it was Pearl Harbor or the site of the World Trade Center? Horrible attacks happened there too. Yet, thousands of people flock to those sites every year......to remember those lives that were lost.

On a lighter note. I am now rooting against Pam & Winnie. I don't like their snotty, nose up in the air attitude. Well that, and they are gunning for the derby moms.

Funny side note.....on Tuesday I came home from 48hrs at the firehouse & my 4yr old says to me: "Daddy, I don't like Max because he was mean to aunt Beth." I chuckled a little bit

Back in the Amazing Race 10 , they used the Hanoi Hilton as a site for a clue or something.

Waiting for them to go to Germany and use Dachua or Poland for Auschwitz.  Killing Fields in Kampuchea would be cool.

I thought about Dachau when reading this particular discussion, which I ultimately didn't respond to because I 100% agree with Jen's assessment that it's partly the point of the AR.

I think if they had to do a stop in the Dachau parking lot, it would be ok.  It's a good lesson to see that this horrible place is just right there next to where people lived/live.  I've been there.  However, they wouldn't be allowed to run through the actual property because it's a very somber place.  Can you imagine "Count the number of steps from barrack A to the crematorium while wearing a costume of flea infested rags.  Report your number to the guard and if you are correct, receive the next clue."  Yikes!   Having cameras, etc, would be ridiculous.

There is a sign in the Dachau museum that says something like "If we burn the books, we are destined to repeat history" which is the perfect point for this whole discussion.  If we ignore the sad things that have happened in our past, we are doing a disservice.  So, I like that they are exposing the teams and us to different things/perspectives/people.   I think at very somber locations they could ask the teams to sit for a minute in silent reflection.  If it's timed, it's fair for everyone.   I'd like to see that.

"outraged"?  really?

Seriously, they make "news" out of Fox opnionators and people that comment in online blogs.

Can't we save our "outrage" for something really "outrageous"?

These people obviously DO NOT watch Survivor.  If they did they never would have picked fire...NEVER.

I missed about 10' near the beginning.  I didn't realize 60 minutes went overtime so when I went to start the recording 5' after it should have been done I saw that 60' was running REALLY long...and it took me another few minutes to back out to the guide and get the follow on show recording.  I doubt I missed much though.

my DVR only captured the 1st 15 minutes of the show, so I do not know who got kicked off.

I did appreciate the apology the Amazing Race did at the beginning of the show though.

They basically apologized for offending any vietnam vets and swore they support our military vets...

Overkill IMHO, I still don't find the episode offensive though.

Definitely agree with A.  Agree with B only if you think you have no chance.  I mean, if they'd gotten some smoke or whatever at that point I probably wouldn't have cared if they stayed.  If you think you're close to "getting it" then I have no problem if you stay and try to finish...

Of course, that particular team had trouble with Fowl as well so if they hadn't had trouble with Fowl they might actually have been right in the running and not last....
