I was just kidding about the Walmart bikes and to be honest it is nice to hear that there is a good chance I won't be the only one out there on a heavy old Wally World/Target bike. I have never entered or watched a tri and to hear this a bit of relief...

.......to be honest I just wanna finish my first race and get rid of the nerves etc so I am not too worried about my time. But then again looking like the driver of a Hummer at an Indy car race ain't cool either......but who cares.......I am personally built more like a Hummer than an Indy car anyway.....so it might be appropriate. LOL!

Maybe I can treat myself to a new bike over the summer and gain those 7+ mins in my races in later in the year, but at the moment it will have to remain a pipe dream.

Oh man, for sprints, it's ANYTHING goes. You'll see Wal-Mart bikes, tri bikes, cruisers, mountain bikes. You won't be the only one, and you'll do fine, if you've done any prep at all.

So, last year, in her first sprint, with a seeded start, and assigned slots, my daughter was seeded 6th in the swim. So, she pulls up her Target bike to slot 6. So she's surrounded by guys in their tri-suits and fancy bikes. Then she looks at the bikes in her rack and tells me "Dad... their wheels cost more than my bike." She did great though. 2nd overall in the swim, and 8th woman.

This year, we're doing the same race, and I'm doing it this time, but my swim SUCKS. So... I'm going to be seeded towards the back, where almost everyone is on Wal-Mart, Cruiser and mountain bikes, with my Cervelo P2 with Aero wheels. I'm just going to cover my face and try to avoid the evil glares from the rest of the people in my rack.

Funny thing is.....my first tri is a reverse sprint (Run, Bike then Swim) and with the swim being my strength (relatively speaking) I will hopefully be passing people in the pool at the end if I have not burnt myself out by then........so that might be cool.......but we will see.

Thanks for the reassurance. This sort of encouragement and support is easing my nerves quite a bit. Cheers.

I've got to name my bike. It keeps talking to me. Generally its saying things like
"Hey, I've already done a IronMan... who is this poser who keeps riding on me?"
and
"15MPH???? What? This slacker can't go faster than that? He should try a Wal-Mart bike"

At least I could reply, if I knew its name.

If your bike is talking to you during your rides you should probably take an extra water bottle with you... that's the dehydration talking, not the bike

I know a few names that I call my bike but they can't be repeated in this forum. Oddly they usually come out when my bike is not allowing me to go over 15 MPH either. Of course that's all the bikes fault. My legs have plenty of power in them!

I can't seem to get into the spreadsheet to edit it. I can view it, but not edit. Is there something I should be doing?

No, there is nothing special you should have to do to edit the spreadsheet. Just ckick in the cell and type in your info. I know that's not much help, but I don't know too much more in depth into google aps.

"He should try a Wal-Mart bike"

Hey.....don't knock the Wal-Mart bikes......that is what I am riding till I can afford a fancy new bike like Karen's new one :-(

....unfortunately the IRS is getting my money at the moment instead of the LBS so I am stuck with my "Wally World" bike for just now :-( :-(

Well maybe I can pass somebody on their fancy bike when I do my first tri next month.....that would feel like a victory in itself. :-)

I'm actually not knocking them. We got my daughter a Target bike for her first 2 sprints last year, and she podiumed both times. BUT...we got her a Cannondale for her 3rd sprint, once we knew that she was going to be doing this on a regular basis, and she dropped 7 minutes on her bike on the same course as an earlier sprint. A Target bike still isn't a bad thing for starting out with.

As an old timer, who just retired his 30 year old bike two months ago, I can tell you that a current Target/Wal-Mart bike is almost as good as top of the line bikes from a decade or two ago.

That's awesome your daughter is in it too! I'm doing a sprint tri with my 15yo son - he'll
probably finish then come find me and do the run again!!! lol

Luck is shining on me today - the weather is great and I'm sneaking out of work early to go ride! yeah!

And I'm not a BIT pissed that the unappreciative wench my beautiful daughter got into the Escape from Alcatraz race and I didn't. But yes, I'm going to be SMOKED in less than a month, and she hasn't trained for tri's at all.

Actually, I'm rooting for her more than myself anyway. Have a great ride!!!

At the top of my spreadsheet it says "View only" and when I click on the cell and type nothing happens (btw, I'm pretty familiar with excel, so I'm thinking it has to do with the sharing). Looking through the Help, it seems like maybe I was not set up as a Contributor? I've tried several different things, but no luck yet.

use the BT challenge login and you can change it.  Or you can log in with it and then add yourself as a contributer.

Heee heee... You got it all wrong. He's our secret weapon. As we pass by the other teams, he spews out slick pumpkin seeds, making everyone else have to slow down or slip on the road.

NICE

Welcome Kiwi - glad you're with us!

Totally with you on the kid thing - rooting for them, but it's completely maddening they just decide to do something then really do it well - i have to train train train.... my son is not a swimmer but can swim. We went to train for the first time - he knocked out 40 laps, not fast, but still - i swam competitively for 15 years growing up and whine and complain about it, he laps me running and on the maiden voyage of my new bike he beat me on a wally bike which only had 3 gears working!!!

Got in 50 minutes last night riding and riding tonight too - guess i need to think about running and pool ... was SUPPOSED to go swim this morning, but my daughter is sicky girl so didn't make it.

Better spend more time working today! have a good one!

btw - do we have a captain?

Hi everybody!

I live in New Zealand, so my season is just about over and I needed to do something to keep the motivtion up - hence the challenge.

I've just completed my second tri. I did two in March and can't wait to sign up for more next spring/summer.

My goals are:

swim 9600 meters
Bike 6.6 hrs

I have torn the medial meniscus in my left knee, so I'm not running untill it heals up (which is taking a while) I really started to focus on running before my first tri cause it's my weakest discipline and was just starting to enjoy it (did I say that out loud?) but maybe I can start again next month.

anyway, good to meet you
